Elizabeth: According to a May 23 letter in the Daily News, titled "APOV: Tips on World Turtle Day", you should help the turtle across the road "in the direction it was headed".
The turtle knows where it was going, and doesn't want to have to start the dangerous trip across the highway all over again. And I doubt it wants anyone to take it 10 miles down the road, either.

This time of the year turtles drag them selves from the swamps up to the road side to lay their eggs. They love the soft gravel on the shoulders of the road to dig a nest.
