Deer hit by car in city, dies on Jackson Street

By Howard B. Owens

An eight-point buck dropped dead in the parking lot of Jackson Street this morning.

I was in court and didn't hear the scanner (or see it), but Dan Fischer of WBTA said he was sitting in his studio when he saw a deer trot past Main & Center.

The buck headed west, turned left on Jackson and then collapsed.

Apparently, it had been struck by a car previously.

It was one of two deer spotted in the city this morning.

Fisher said a hunter came by, tagged it and hauled the buck away.

Bea McManis

I know the lady who was struck by the deer. She said it came out near Continental Beauty, struck the side of her car...went over her car and down to the parking lot where it collapsed.
She said neither she or her passenger were hurt, just shook up over the incident. The damage was on the front passenger door, which took some work to open in order for her passenger to exit the car.

This is the most active time of year for deer. They are approaching their breeding season. They will act peculiarly at times and there will be more and more of them on the roadways.

Although I am not seeing deer in the woods while hunting, I am also seeing them in the city. To hell with this woods hunting. Im setting up a tree stand on Jackson and Rt.63. Someone told me that Main Street is the cutoff/saftey area of where you can hunt. Is this true?

Only if damage is above $1000.....my insurance company sent me a form to fill out within 10 days if the damage was $1000 or above....my damage was $817,and that was hitting a fawn at around 40-45mph -and I slowed down.So pretty much if you hit an adult deer, you'll have the damage unless you graze it.

I had 2 doe's and a fawn jump in front of my car, just past JK. They were under the trees, in the school yard. I also have pics of the deer standing in someones yard, past JK going towards Bank St( the little side st. that cuts over to North Spruce).

They are very active in this area of the city this year Karen. They are in my backyard most every evening. I live at Woodstock, behind JK. The "little side street" is Evergreen Drive.

Hi Amy, yes I've seen quite a few down your way. They are so beautiful, but its dangerous for them in the city. What can you do though? I can remember taking my daughter to the highschool, back in 98-99, and a buck getting hit in front of 20 some cars filled with mothers and kids.

Can't thank everyone enough for all these deer sightings. I'm taking the day off work to put up more tree stands. I know just the spot on Evergreen Drive. I will land a Boone & Crocket Buck yet. Thank you all!
