Guns in unlocked cars among items stolen in overnight car break-ins in Elba and Byron

By Howard B. Owens

There was a rash of car break-ins over night in Elba and Byron and items stolen include long rifles, according to Deputy Brian Thompson.

Thompson is asking that anybody who saw or heard anything suspicious between the hours of 10:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. to call the Sheriff's Office at 585-345-3000.

He said any residents who find that their cars were entered over night, no matter what was taken, should call.

"People will say, 'oh, it's just some spare change,' but we need to map where these break-ins took place," Thompson said.

The pattern of break-ins include Barre in Orleans County, Thompson said. He estimates the total number of cars reported so far at about 20.

All of them were left unlocked, including the cars that contained the guns.

"People are just not getting the message," Thompson said. "Every house we go to people say they didn't know we've been having car break-ins for the last year and a half. I just don't get it. You've been reporting it. The Daily's been reporting it. It's been on WBTA and on TV in Buffalo and Rochester. People don't understand that in today's drug-infested situation we're in, it happens everywhere, not just in the city."

Investigators are looking for possibly two suspects, Thompson said. Based on the description from people who heard the timing of car doors slamming and cars driving off, it appears there is a person on foot going into cars and another person driving a getaway car.

In all fairness, not everyone reads the Batavian. If I didn't read the news from here, I'd never have known there was a rash of car break-ins going on. I've never heard it mentioned anywhere else but here.

Drug infested? I honestly don't know anyone drug infested..lol. I see drugs making the news almost every day but I don't think it represents the majority of society. Not every young person, black person, poor person or working person does drugs. If I believed everything I read in the news I'd be inclined to believe that drugs could be found in every house or on every corner.

C'mon Deputy Thompson, you're speaking from the point of view of a person who deals with the dregs of society every day. You're jaded. The people you deal with don't represent the majority of society.

This topic has also been on WBTA and the Daily multiple of times. The Batavian has its audience, and some of those people rely exclusively on The Batavian, but both WBTA and the Daily has their audiences, some of whom have never even heard of The Batavian.

What amazes me is that this has been in all three of those media outlets and on television news, and people still missed the story. It's important to keep up with the news or your community, and these people clearly are not doing it.

Also, I think what Deputy Thompson means is that drugs are everywhere these days. We see that from the crime/arrest reports we publish all of the time. And these kinds of petty crimes are usually the product of people trying to get drug money.

To whatever degree meth has entered the region, I wonder what impact that is having on this sort of petty crime. Meth goes hand-in-hand with petty crime.

Either way, drugs is most likely behind these break ins. My car got hit back in September. I just hope The sheriffs Dept. redirect some of their resources from other areas to take care of this problem. because pretty soon people will start locking their cars and not leaving anything in them and the houses will be next.

I think everybody here is right, to a degree.

The big city dealers are trying to move into our area all the time, with help from some local people, and are succeeding, a little.

Please don't forget, a person who has lost their job due to the recent economy and may have a family to feed. With the state of "the State", many who really need help from Social Services aren't getting it. Some have no access to the internet, or cable TV. Thus, they are reduced to finding help in "criminal" ways. I know that drugs are a problem, but it's not the only issue here. A young lower income family may look to crime only to survive, because the "system" isn't helping them meet every day needs.

Just voicing another possible opinion. Not all lower income people are on drugs, and many of them want to work, there just isn't much out there right now that will actually pay the "soaring" bills.

Its not the "systems" responsibility to help anyone meet their every day needs.

Guess who's back, back again
Gahagan's back, tell a friend
Guess who's back, guess who's back
Guess who's back, guess who's back, guess who's back

Now this looks like a job for me
So everybody just follow me
'Cos we need a little controversy
'Cos it felt so empty here without me

Elba and Byron: Unlocked Cars Yield Guns in Overnight Thefts

I can't speak for the whole county, but I don't know anyone who listens to WBTA. I tried to listen to it one evening to catch a program, and all I got was static.

As for the Daily and this website? I would guess, maybe 30% of Bergenites read the Daily. TheBatavian... For one thing, it's called the "Batavian," not the Geneseean; I bet less than 2% of Bergenites even know it exists.

C.M.- I listen to WBTA occasionally. Some high school sports, news, Muckdog games. It really doesn't have much reach outside the city.
As far as "less than 2% of Bergenites know the Batavian exists", I think you are underestimating it's reach, it's growth and it's potential. According to the 2000 census, Bergen had a population of 3800. That would mean only 64 Bergenites would need to know of this site, and I am sure there are more than that.
I only read the Daily online, but I prefer this site. And I'm a Leroyan, not a Batavian, but it is still a legitimate source for info.
All of this car break in news is old news.
