My fascination with the old barns of Genesee County continues. This one is on Griswald Road near Route 33.
UPDATE: I changed out the picture. The more I looked at it, the less happy I was with the blue tinge of the previous photo. I ran it through PhotoShop again and got a better color.
Also, a correction: The barn is in Stafford.
It's sad to see them fall
It's sad to see them fall into disrepair....a little further down 33 there is a barn near the road that used to have a Gortons Fish ad painted on the side-can't remember if any of it is still visible. You should drive around and take a photo of the barns w/ ads-there are a few "Chew Mail Pouch Tobacco" barns around Genesee County...
I was going to mention that
I was going to mention that myself Bob. Yes - you can still see some of the Gortons ad.
I love the blue-ish pic!
I love the blue-ish pic! Looks like a Christmas card indeed.
Howard, have you seen the book dedicated to barns in Genesee Co? I believe it was published years ago. Fascinating.
There's a barn on Perry Rd., just off Cole Rd. & Rt. 19 here in Pavilion. It's a "5-Sided Barn." Not too many like that still standing. It's at the old Johnson's apple orchard. It's worth taking a drive out to see.
We had a customer that drove
We had a customer that drove from Hamlin to Genesee County just to paint pictures of our barns. He would visit a barn 5-6 times in different light, taking pictures each time, then go home and work on a barn painting for weeks. He said that Genesee County had the best barns in WNY. Who knew?
Howard it is funny that you
Howard it is funny that you picked this barn to take a picture of because I have photographed the same barn several times over the past few years. I travel to North Chili often and catch a lot of nice sunsets behind this barn. Its also just down the road from my grandparents old farm. Thanks for posting the pic, I will send you a few that I have also.
There are also a few barns
There are also a few barns left that have wooden silos. those are rare indeed.
I'll look for those, Janice.
I'll look for those, Janice. But these brick/tile silos also interest me. I read somewhere that they're unique to WNY because there was one regional manufacture who cornered the market on building them.
My neighbor has what is left
My neighbor has what is left of an Old "square" wooden silo. Only 3 sides are still standing (been leaning to the east pretty bad for years) with only one side of the silo just about complete with inner silage wall and outer weather wall. The barn has been long gone but what is left of the old silo refuses to give way to gravity. Maybe I should get some picture of what is left of it before it does come down. The nice thing about it is that you can see how the inner wall is constructed to hold silage, like a "cut-away-view".
Great care should be taken to
Great care should be taken to preserve these old barns. They are a great part of our history and something that we should teach our children about. They remind us of how simple life use to be and stand as a reminder of where we all came from. online casino
