It's a Northern Water Snake (Nerodia sipedon); a large, non-venomous, snake in the Colubridae family, native to North America. It feeds on minnows and fish, frogs, leeches and other aquatic species. Often seen on the shoreline hunting or basking on rocks to digest its meal. Although non-venomous, it will bite to defend itself, and the ridges in its mouth can break the skin.
