I remember it being this cold last winter. I have chickens and have to go make sure that their water is not frozen solid or that they haven't run out. I have a heated dog dish in one run, a heated rabbit waterer in another, and 2 heat lamps in the other 2 pens. I remember doing it last year too... and it seemed to last forever last winter.

Back in December while I was standing outside my house in a t-shirt enjoying near 60 degree temperatures, I decided to give up my right to complain about the cold weather this year.
The records show the winter of 2002-2003 was the coldest in 24 years. We had 119 inches of snow that winter starting on Nov. 1 and continuing through April 7.
Just before I clicked on this comment section I was wondering if Batavia allowed backyard chickens. I got six hens about ten days ago and the coop section of their tractor is only covered on three sides. It's going to be below freezing for a few days with wicked winds so I was thinking of stapling plastic over the bottom two thirds of the wire pen area to serve as a wind break. It's 30 now and windy, yet they seem fine. Am I going to unnecessary trouble? I mean, I wouldn't want to spend a night in 20 degree temps but I probably could with a chicken down sleeping bag.
George, my chickens sleep in a shed and have an outside run during the day. They stay in the coop almost all day long. I think that I would shelter them from the winds... if it's not too late. In fairness to those who believe in Global Warming. It could indeed Global Warming. Because Global Warming doesn't mean uniform warming the world over. It could trigger unusual weather of any type -- it means the global climate is changing, and some places could get colder.
Or winters could be colder and summers warmer, etc.
On the other hand, no one season of weather patterns proves or disproves global climate change.
