Genesee Cancer Assistance Inc. (GCA), a community-based, volunteer organization located in Batavia, set the date for their annual Festival of Hope celebration. The Festival of Hope celebration & fundraiser gives GCA the ability to help cancer patients and families who need support.

This year’s festival will honor Brian Duyssen who was diagnosed in January of 2004 with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma disease. Brian was treated with chemotherapy and his brother Andrew donated bone marrow to save Brian’s life. Brian, Andrew and the entire Duyssen family are commended for their strength and perseverance and will be honored at the 2010 Festival of Hope event and Golf against Cancer Tournament.

To honor and remember, Genesee Cancer Assistance has chosen Bob Korn who passed away last May 15, 2009.  Bob was an avid fan of Golf and Hockey.  He was a vocal supported for Genesee Cancer Assistance for many years and is dearly loced by his wife and children.  There is no better member of our community to honor this year at this event than Bob Korn.

Paul C. Stomper, M.D., author of Come Sunday, will kick-off the opening ceremony as key-note speaker. Stomper grew up in Batavia and is renowned across the country as an expert in the cancer imaging field authoring over one hundred papers in peer-reviewed medical journals and authored the Cancer Imaging Manual.

Come Sunday is an inspiration for living with heart and contains stories and quotes of inspiration and faith that were shared by a cancer doctor and patients over 25 years.  The book is a reflection and appreciation for silent heroes that the author calls "cancer victors and victors of faith"—the patients themselves and those that serve them. Come Sunday is a timely message of faith and hope and speaks to the heart of every person.

This year’s festival will include the popular “Kids Zone” which includes a fun run and other entertaining activities, the third annual 5-K Run for Hope, the traditional Walk for Hope, a Chinese raffle, and the lighting of the luminaries.

This event allows GCA to operate and to continue helping the residents of our county who are battling cancer.  This event is about honoring others in our community who has passed away from cancer as it is, ensuring that those who are suffering with cancer today have the assistance they need.

Please save the date for this important and exciting celebration to be held at the Batavia Downs Gaming and Racing, June 4 at 5PM and check us out on face book- group name Genesee Cancer Assistance.
