Batavia author Deanne Quinn Miller to speak at Richmond Memorial Library

Batavia author Deanne Quinn Miller and co-author Gary Craig will visit Richmond Memorial Library on Thursday, September 30 at 7:00 pm for book talk and signing in the Reading Room.

The Prison Guard’s Daughter: My Journey Through the Ashes of Attica, published on September 7, 2021, captures Miller’s personal experience as the daughter of William “Billy” Quinn, a corrections officer who was attacked within the first few minutes of the Attica Prison Riot, dying two days later on September 11, 1971. Miller seeks to uncover the truth about her father’s murder and the riot through “a story of crossing racial divides, befriending inmates and correctional officers alike, and challenging the state to reveal and pay for its malfeasance.”

Described by Booklist as “a personal, affecting, and eye-opening account of a pivotal tragedy on the seemingly endless road to prison reform,” this is Miller’s first book.

Author Deanne Quinn Miller is a member and spokesperson of the Forgotten Victims of Attica and the daughter of Correctional Officer William Quinn, the first casualty of the Attica Prison Riot. With Miller's leadership, the Forgotten Victims secured $12 million in reparations for its members, counseling for all who sought it, and an annual memorial at the prison. Since 2014, she has been the program coordinator for the Veterans Defense Program of the New York State Defenders Association. Miller lives in Batavia, New York, and is married with two daughters.

A reporter for more three decades, Gary Craig has won more than two dozen state, regional and national awards for investigative reporting and writing. He is a member of the Watchdog/investigative team at the Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester NY. Craig first covered Rochester's Brink's heist in 1993 with the arrests of a priest, an IRA rebel, and a retired cop. Seven Million, the story of that robbery and a subsequent murder connected to the crime, is Craig's first book. He and his wife, Charlotte, are the parents of two daughters and the couple lives in Brighton.

This program is free to attend and all are welcome! Copies of the book will be available to borrow at the library prior to the event, following its publication on September 7, 2021.  The book will be available to purchase at the event for $20, cash only.
