DOT to hold information session to discuss traffic safety at Route 77 and Ledge Road, Alabama

By Howard B. Owens

Press release:

The New York State Department of Transportation will hold an information session on Tuesday, Nov. 28 to discuss proposed plans for a project to improve safety at the intersection of Route 77 and Ledge Road in Alabama, Genesee County. The meeting will be held in an open house format from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Alabama Fire Hall, located at 2230 Judge Road. No formal presentation will be given.

The preferred alternative is to build modern roundabout. The proposed project will improve safety at the intersection by reducing crashes. A preliminary layout of the roundabout will be available to view and discuss with NYSDOT representatives.

Construction is slated to begin in the spring of 2019.

The location is accessible for people with disabilities. If anybody requires special accommodations to participate in this public outreach, please contact Colleen Williams by Nov. 20 at 272-3363 or by e-mail at colleen.williams@dot.ny.gov

A roundabout? On Route 77? At the intersection of 77 and Ledge Rd.? Are they insane?

I mean, it's not like the ones they build in a village or city, where vehicles are approaching at 30mph. They're talking about a roadway, where 40,000lb vehicles are traveling at 55mph+. Downhill.

As it is, vehicles traveling north only have about 300-feet of "straight-ahead" view, from where they've just come over a hill and around a slight curvature in the roadway. As a roundabout, large enough to handle "big rigs", would need even more room to maneuver, that 300-feet would be "shrunken" to somewhere around 200-feet (or less). What a nightmare!

Could someone attend that meeting, and, photograph and publish, pictures of their intended layout?

lol ..... a roundabout in the middle of nowhere....who will take credit for this idea? I do believe there will be blinking lights. They'll have to have them to let you know there's a roundabout ahead.... appears the meeting is for some legal reason as construction will begin in 2019......I am the DOT, I'm another government agency that knows what is best for you.... trust us for you can't stop us ......
