Genesee County's unemployment rate improved slightly from June to July, according to data released today by the NYS Department of Labor.
The rate for July was at 6.1 percent, a tick lower than June's 6.2 percent. Both numbers are more than a percentage point better than the 7.5 percent rate in July 2012.
Only Ithaca, at 5.6 percent, has a lower unemployment rate than Genesee County. Glens Falls is also at 6.1.
The labor department reports 2,000 people without jobs in the county, compared to 2,400 a year ago.
Elsewhere in GLOW:
- Livingston: 6.8 percent
- Orleans: 8.5 percent
- Wyoming: 6.7 percent
The state's rate is 7.6 and the nation's is 7.7.
I believe this speaks well of
I believe this speaks well of our county government and the partnership to bring agri-business to Genesee Co. I wonder if tax incentives any way contribute to this favorable rate and how that might be marketed???
It makes sense that Ithaca
It makes sense that Ithaca would have lowest unemployment, they have a transient population of 22,000 that leaves when school is out. They also have Cornell University which is a 5 billion dollar a year economic engine. Then they have Ithaca College as well which is a substantial college as well. And remember both of these campuses are walking distance from Downtown Ithaca, not nearly as far as GCC is to Downtown Batavia.
Apples to oranges comparison at best. When I left there in 2009 the average apt rent for a one bedroom was $800-$900 per month +... Theres a reason why Ithaca has the nickname Little Manhattan.
