For now, their flights consist of short hops in search of grainfields. All too soon the flights will be much higher in altitude and much longer in duration, after which we won't see them again until late winter or early spring.

Jim, I heard back from Dick a couple of weeks ago. He's quite certain that tree was gouged up from a bear digging out grubs. It was too high to be a porcupine. Also, in case you didn't already know, you'll likely be seeing snowy owls again soon. Another irruption is underway.
