Eddie L. Miles Jr., 45, of Washington Avenue, Batavia, is charged with criminal obstruction of breathing, and torturing or injuring animals. Mile is accused of putting his arm around the neck of another person and obstructing that person's breathing. He is also accused of injecting an unknown purple liquid into a dog. He was jailed on $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond.

Ronald C. Palmer, 46, of Florida, was arrested as a fugitive from justice. Le Roy PD arrested Palmer with assistance from the Local Drug Task Force. He was located on East Main Street, Le Roy. He was wanted on a warrant out of Broward County for violation of pre-trial release terms. The original charge is grand theft, 3rd. He was jailed without bail pending extradition.

Matthew B. Hardesty, 24, Martin Avenue, Blasdell, is charged with grand larceny, 4th. Hardesty was wanted on a warrant for an alleged grand larceny in May 2016 on Narramore Drive. Hardesty was located by USAF Security Police at Niagara Falls Airbase and turned over to Batavia PD. He was jailed without bail.

Eloise A. Peart, 31, of Wilder Street, Rochester, was arrested on a warrant for alleged failure to appear. Peart was released on bail.

Jeffrey T. Garrett, 45, of East Main Street, Batavia, is charged with disobeying a mandate. Garrett allegedly failed to respond to a grand jury subpoena.

Sean P. Carney, 26, of Hickory Hill Drive, Mayfield Village, Ohio, is charged with petit larceny. Carney is accused of shoplifting at Tops Market. He was jailed on $1,000 bail, $2,500 bond.

Dexter L. Turner, 25, of Church Street, Medina, is charged with failure to appear. He was jailed on $1,000 bail. He was also arrested on another warrant and bail on that arrest was set at $10,000.

A motor-vehicle accident with injuries is reported on the westbound Thruway at mile marker 384.5. Four or five vehicles are involved. Le Roy fire and ambulance service are responding.

A barn fire is reported Quinlan and West Bergen roads in Le Roy. It's gone to a second alarm. Smoke is showing. The city, Stafford and Pavilion are called as mutual aid to Le Roy Fire Department.

UPDATE 1:46 p.m.: "We do have a working fire with exposures," says a first responder on scene.

UPDATE 2:05 p.m.: Le Roy command puts Stafford back in service; Mumford, which was responding, was also told to go back in service. Caledonia is responding.

UPDATE 2:13 p.m.: "Fire knocked down. Doing overhaul."

UPDATE 2:23 p.m.: Fire is out.

UPDATE 2:30 p.m.: The fire was caused by a lawn mower which caught fire after being used.

A glider or some type of homemade-looking prop plane is reported to have touched down at the curb on North Street Road in Le Roy. Law enforcement is called to check out the situation.

UPDATE 11:29 a.m.: An officer at the scene told dispatchers "This is a gray plane that may be heading to the Heddon airstrip on Randall Road." The private landing facility is called Martha Heddon and it's located at 6684 Randall Road, Le Roy.

A highly intoxicated male was reportedly driving a vehicle in circles in the parking lot of Tops Market in Le Roy on West Main Street. The caller then told dispatchers the guy exited the vehicle, had a difficult time walking, and went inside the store. Genesee County Sheriff's deputies and Le Roy police are responding.

Farmers Market Coupons are still being distributed at the Genesee County Office for the Aging, 2 Bank St. in Batavia. Please have ID as proof of age must be provided; family members CANNOT pick up coupons for you.

Booklets are available to adults age 60 years and older who are income-eligible. 

Income guidelines for 2017 are: household of one $1,860 per month; household of two $2,504 per month; and, household of three $3,149 per month.

Maureen Estabrooks, Office for the Aging’s coordinator for the program, noted that, “It still remains, that anyone 60 or older in a household may receive a coupon booklet as long as they are income eligible. This means that in a qualifying household, multiple individuals may receive booklets. This program is a wonderful way to help older adults with limited income to purchase healthy fresh produce from our local farmers.”

They can be used at the Downtown Public Market in Batavia and at the Le Roy Farmers' Market.

A motor-vehicle accident(s) occurred on the eastbound Thruway in the area of mile marker 379.9. Le Roy Fire Department is on scene and there's one ambulance there. Three more ambulances are called in to two sites in the vicinity of the crash. Caledonia ambulance is secured along with two Mercy rigs.

"A fawn is in the backyard and confused about how to get over the fence," says a dispatcher. Le Roy Police are responding to the area of 18 Gilbert St. to see if they can be of help.

This past week, students in the Le Roy Central School District participated in Camp Invention, which was a chance for kids to apply the skills and knowledge associated with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) to see what they could create from their own ideas.

This was the first year for the weeklong camp, which had 46 participants.

Lessons explored by students:

• Duct Tape Billionaire: Students launched their own accessory business with creations made from duct tape! They learned about patents, designing a product, creating a mock-up and presenting to potential investors "Shark Tank Style."
• Mission Space Makers: Students created new planets for human habitation. They grew crystal trees and hatched eggs in the Space Lab and created their very own planetary system through lots of teamwork.
• Have a Blast: This module focused on engineering different launching tools such as snowball throwers, balloon catapults, a giant air cannon, bubble blasters and more.
• Operation Keep Out: Hands down this was a camper favorite! Students brought in old items such as DVD players or VCRs, X-Box remotes, radios and used reverse engineering to take them apart. Then they used items from their Take Apart to create their very own spy gadget box equipped with an alarm.  

Part of the instructional team included seven leadership interns from Le Roy Jr./Sr. High School as well as three counselors-in-training. These students ranged from grade seven to seniors and each received 40 hours volunteer credit, a certificate and letter of recommendation.

Jeremy Lyons, 32, of Lake Street, Le Roy, was taken custody as a result of an outstanding parole warrant on July 19 by members the Le Roy Police Department. In early afternoon of July 19^th the Le Roy Police Department received an anonymous tip that Lyons had been seen hanging around outside his residence on Lake Street. When police arrived on location, a subject matching Lyons' description was seen running into the apartment building. Police met with an uncooperative tenant who denied Lyons being in the residence. After a brief investigation, it was believed that Lyons jumped out of a second-story window of the residence in an attempt to flee the police. Members of the Le Roy Police Department with assistance from the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit as well as members of the New York State Police were able to track and locate Lyons hiding in a wooded area off of Lent Avenue in the Village of Le Roy. Lyons was taken into custody at that time without incident. He was then turned over to the Genesee County Jail to await further action by New York State Parole. The Le Roy Police Department would like to thank the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit and New York State Police for assisting with taking Lyons into custody.

Michelle Richmond, 48, of Washington Avenue, Batavia, is charged with: felony DWI -- previous conviction within 10 years; operation of a motor vehicle with a BAC of .08 percent of more; aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the third degree; driving with an open container of alcohol; and having unauthorized tinted windows -- 44 percent (visibility). Richmond was issued an appearance ticket for City of Batavia Court and is to appear there Sept. 6. The incident location was Central Avenue at 9:41 p.m. on July 19. The case was handled by Genesee Coumty Sheriff's Deputy Jeremy McClellan.

Charles G.T. Williams AKA "Gusto," 38, of Jackson Street, Batavia, is charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, 4th, a Class C felony, and criminal possession of a weapon, 3rd, a Class D felony. On Wednesday, July 19, GC Local Drug Enforcement Task Force members observed Williams driving a vehicle in the City of Batavia while there was an active bench warrant out for him. He was stopped on Ellicott Street in the city and arrested. At the time of his arrest, he was allegedly in possession of a handgun and a quantity of powder cocaine and crack cocaine. He was jailed on the outstanding warrant and was due to be arraigned today on the new charges.

Dwayne Bartholemau Spivey, 40, of Doran Street, Rochester, is charged with aggravated unlicensed operation, 1st. At 10:45 a.m. Sunday on Lake Street Road, Le Roy, Le Roy PD, State Police and the Sheriff's Office were conducting a joint traffic checkpoint. Officers reported observing a vehicle driven by Spivey stop prior to the checkpoint, with Spivey exiting the driver's side and changing seats with the passenger, making the passenger the driver when the vehicle arrived at the checkpoint. Upon investigation by Deputy Chad Cummings and Deputy Chris Erion, Spivey was found to have 25 suspensions over the course of two decades. The other occupant, the passenger who became the driver, had a valid license. Spivey was jailed without bail.

Jesse Dean Parsons, 33, of Swamp Road, Byron, is charged with promoting prison contraband. Parsons is accused of entering the Genesee County Jail on an unrelated charge with a known banned item.

High, fast waters of the Oatka Creek are forcing organizers to run the annual Duck Derby a little differently this year.

Instead of floating the rubber duckies across the water, from the west bank to the east bank, volunteers will blow the ducks down the road with leaf blowers.

The Duck Derby, a fundraiser for both the Oatka Festival and a local charity, will take place at 5 p.m.

A 23-year-old Le Roy man was charged with DWI after a report last night that a car he was driving went off the roadway on Kenney Road, into a swamp and struck a tree.

Kodey Richard Mills, of Myrtle Street, is also charged with driving with a BAC of .08 or greater, moving from lane unsafely and driving without insurance.

The accident was reported at 10:02 p.m.

Mills was released on an appearance ticket.

The accident was investigated by Deputy James Stack.

It's been years of effort and expense for Bill Farmer, but nearly a decade after he acquired the Creekside Inn, after a fire destroyed most of the building, the tavern that is part of so many local memories, is once again welcoming customers.

The 200-year-old building has been completely refurbished from top to bottom and is gorgeous. Farmer has hired a top-notch staff and the Creekside is set to become a local favorite, but a regional dining destination.  

Tavern dining on the second floor and the patio bar are open. The third-floor fine dining won't open for a few weeks yet.

This weekend, during Oatka Fest, the Creekside is not accepting reservations. It is first-come, first-served.
