Pembroke Intermediate School in Corfu is one of only 264 public schools nationwide to receive a 2009 National Blue Ribbon School award by the U.S. Department of Education.
Only two other Western New York schools received the honor.
There are four primary elections in Genesee County today.
There are Republican primaries in Byron and Pembroke for town board seats.
In Darien, there's a three-way Democratic primary for two town board seats.
In Stafford, the Conservative Party will pick a candidate for Highway Superintendent.

Alexander put the ball into the end zone three times in the first half to spark a 21-0 win over Pembroke.
For the second-straight week, Pembroke struggled to move the ball. The offense managed only two first downs in the second half.
The first Trojan's first score came on an 80-yard run by Jay Schafer.
On the next drive, Schafer again carried the load, capping the effort with a 19-yard run.
Ryan Piechocki scored the third and final touchdown of the game midway through the second quarter, crossing the goal line with a three-yard run.
Pembroke, along with Oakfield-Alabama, has dominated the Genesee Region League in recent years, but has opened this season with a 0-2 record. O-A is now 1-1 after losing to Holley today, 16-7.
Both Alexander is now 1-1.

Joseph D. Becerril, 21, of 320 Polebride Road, Avon, is charged with criminal possession of stolen property and petit larceny. Becerril was arrested at Darien Lake Theme Park for allegedly stealing items from cars in the parking lot. Becerril was jailed on $1,500 bail. The case was investigated by Deputy Jason Saile with assistance from deputies Frank Bordonaro and Howard Carlson as well as the State Police and Darien Lake security.
Joseph M. Hamm, 32, of 580 Glide Road, Rochester, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 and unlicensed operation. Hamm was arrested after the Sheriff's Office received a report early Saturday morning of a car in a ditch off Sumner Road in Darien.
Eric P. North, 29, of 152 Linwood Ave., Amherst, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 and failure to keep right. North was arrested following a traffic stop on Route 33 in Pembroke by Deputy Bradley D. Mazur.
Karen A. Dusky, 37, of 7158 Wright Road, Basom, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08, failure to keep right and endangering the welfare of a child. Dusky was stopped just after midnight Saturday morning by Deputy Patrick J. Reeves on Route 77 in Pembroke. She reportedly had a child under 17 in the vehicle with her.
Carrie M. Capizzi, 28, of 3300 Broadway, Alexander, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 and failure to dim headlights. Capizzi was stopped for allegedly failing to dim headlights at 2:39 a.m. on Route 20 in Alexander by Deputy Howard Carlson.
Heather L. Leith, 30, of 3938 Risher Road, Youngstown, Ohio, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 and inadequate headlights. Leith is also accused of with driving an unregistered vehicle, improper license plates and operating without insurance. Leith was stopped by Deputy Mazur just after midnight on Sunday morning. She was jailed on $500 bail.
A 17-year-old is charged with trespass. The youth is reportedly a former employee of Darien Lake Theme Park who had been banned from the property, yet was found in the park Sunday about 4 p.m..
Mitchell J. Atwell, 24, of 308 Mcintyre Road, Le Roy, is charged with harassment. Atwell is accused of making verbal threats during a dispute with a neighbor.
Christopher T. Herman, 30, of 39 Citation Drive, Henrietta, is charged with DWI, operating with a BAC of .08 and endangering the welfare of a child. Herman was stopped Sunday at 1:05 a.m. at a police checkpoint on Law Street. Herman reportedly had his 4-year-old son in the car.
Julian J. Matla, Jr., 45, of 35 Church St., Le Roy, is charged with DWI and operating with a BAC of .08. Malta was stopped at a police checkpoint at 11:58 p.m. Saturday.
Michael T. Ellis, 21, of 2781 School St., North Collins, is charged with DWI. Ellis was arrested by Batavia Police after allegedly failing to abide by rules set down in a conditional discharge for a previous DWI guilty plea.
Karen Grzybowski, 38, of 24 Audabon Terrance, is charged with harassment. The charge stems from an incident at 10:05 p.m. Saturday on Allegany Road in Darien. No details were provided.
Jacob R. Hennard, 20, of Bergen, is charged with DWI and operating with a BAC of .08. Hennard was stopped by State Police on Colby Road in Darien at 10 p.m. on Friday.

A crushing Notre Dame defense led the Fighting Irish to a 21-0 victory over Pembroke.
Pembroke managed only 15 yards of total offense in the first half, while Mike Pratt lead Notre Dame on offense all game, ripping some big runs while Nick Bochicchio connected with Gianni Zambito on two touchdown passes.
The Irish scored on their first possession after Pratt marched the team down the field before Bochicchio hit Zambito on a 35-yard bomb.
A missed field goal by Matt Thompson deprived Notre Dame of the chance to score a second time in the first quarter.
Thompson would redeem himself later in the came when he recovered from a bad snap to get off a great punt.
After two long runs in the second quarter, Pratt dove in from the three-yard line to put the Fighting Irish up 14-0.
In the second half, Pembroke continued to struggle on offense, putting up only a couple of first downs, and finished the game with less than 100 yards total offense.
Notre Dame's final score came in the third quarter when Bochicchio found Zambito again for a 31-yard strike.

Stacy R. Bechtold, 31, of 1429 East Drive, Alden, is charged with DWI and criminal impersonation, along with several other charges after being stopped by Sheriff's deputies at 10:29 p.m. Saturday. Bechtold was reportedly seen driving erratically from Alabama to Maltby Road in Oakfield. When stopped, Bechtold allegedly provided deputies with a fake identity and false birth date. It turns out, she reportedly was driving on a suspended license and an outstanding arrest warrant from Monroe County. Additional charges: Driving with a BAC of .08 or greater, reckless driving, aggravated unlicensed operation, consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle, failure to notify DMV of an address change, uninsured vehicle and failure to keep right. Deputies Chris Parker and Brad Mazur investigated the incident. Bechtold was released to the Monroe County Sheriff's Department on the outstanding warrant.
Christopher A. Saddler, 25, of 3 Lydun Drive, Albion, is charged with criminal mischief. Saddler allegedly punched a candy machine inside Tenney Laundry.
Gregory Seppe, 51, of 19 Manhatten Ave., Batavia, is charged with trespass. Seppe allegedly entered the Salvation Army after previously being told he was not allowed on the premises. He was jailed on $500 bail.
Vincent J. T. Dell, 21, of 17 Thorpe St., Batavia, and Nateeka M. Gibson, 20, of 13 Thorpe St., Batavia, are both charged with disorderly conduct for allegedly fighting at 3:07 Saturday morning. Jerell J.T. Jones, 20, of 17 Thorpe St., Batavia, was charged with littering during the same incident. Officers Dan Coffey and Frank Klimjack handled the call.
Vincent Michael Esten, 27, of 10998 Transit Road, Pavilion, is charged with filing a false report with the Sheriff's Office. Esten allegedly reported that another individual had opened a cable television account using his name. After further investigation, the report allegedly turned out to be false. Deputy Joseph Graff investigated the report.
Jody L. Beaumont, 39, of 8557 East Main Road, Le Roy, is charged with DWI and leaving the scene of a property damage accident. Beaumont reportedly hit some trees on York Road and then allegedly left the scene. He was later located at his residence. He is also charged with a BAC of .08 or greater and moving from a lane unsafely. The accident reportedly occurred at 5:40 a.m., Sunday. Deputies John Weis and Frank Bordanaro investigated the incident.
Patrick S. Waldron, 21, of 1590 Edgewood Road, Rochester, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 or greater and moving from a lane unsafely. Waldron was reportedly stopped Sunday at 1:15 a.m. at Route 237 and Walkers Corner Road.
Nicholas R. Harig, 19, of 170 Trowbridge Street, Buffalo, is charged with DWI following a traffic stop in Corfu by Officer Edward Caton for allegedly tailgating. Harig was also cited for having an inadequate muffler on his vehicle.
Dustin D. Say, 18, of 1952 Perry Road, North Java, and a 17-year-old companion from Alexander are charged with a felony count of burglary. Say and his companion allegedly entered an unlocked garage in Alexander and stole alcoholic beverages.
Sarah J. Patrick, 19, of Lockport, is charged with DWI. Patrick was stopped by State Police on Route 77 in Pembroke at 9:28 p.m. on Friday.
Chad A. Plante, 25, of Rochester, is charged with DWI, unlicensed operation and driving with a BAC of .08 or greater. Plante was stopped by State Police on Route 77 in Darien at 9:45 p.m. on Friday.
Benjamin P. Greene, 21, of Basom, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 or greater, and failure to stay in designated lane. Greene was stopped by State Police on Galloway Road in Batavia at 2:31 a.m. on Sunday.
Daniel N. Brown, 36, of Le Roy, is charged with two counts of possession of a forged instrument. Brown was arrested by State Police on West Saile Drive in Batavia. The initial report was taken on June 7. Brown was released on his own recognizance.
By the time fire crews from Indian Falls and Pembroke arrived on scene of a truck fire this afternoon, the tractor, but not the trailer, was fully engulfed in flames.
Firefighters quickly noticed a placard on the trailer warning that it hauled an oxidizer chemical and notified dispatchers. Genesee County's hazmat team was dispatched to the fire location -- the Flying J off the Thruway at Route 77 in Pembroke.
While it took firefighters from Indian Falls, Pembroke, East Pembroke and Corfu nearly an hour to battle the blaze, they did manage to contain most of the fire to the tractor, according Tom Yaeger, emergency management coordinator for Genesee County.
The fire was initially reported at 1:22 p.m..
The fire did extend into the trailer, the but it was kept well away from the hazardous chemical, Yaeger said.
The chemical was potassium nitrate. The chemical has a wide variety of uses, including fertilizer and fireworks. At one time it was used as a food preservative for meats. In this case, it was stored in a small electrical component, Yaeger said, and did not spill or leak.
Still, it was a good thing the hazmat team was already in place because more than 240 gallons of diesel fuel leaked into the Flying J's drainage system.
The system, Yaeger said, is designed to contain such spills and none of the fuel went beyond the Flying J property. Most of it wound up in a containment pond, where hazmat crews were able to soak up most of the diesel.
At 4:30 p.m., Yaeger and his team, as well as Pembroke's fire crews, were still on scene awaiting the arrival of a private company to finish the clean up.
There were no injuries in the fire or as a result of the spill or the emergency efforts.
Route 77 was shut down for a couple of hours as a result of the incident.
The tractor is described by a Sheriff's Office report as a 2006 Volvo Tractor, owned by Homes Freight, Inc., out of Ontario, Calif. The tractor was a total loss.

Hazmat crews are responding to a truck fire at the Flying J on Route 77 at the Thruway in Pembroke.
The chemical involved hasn't been identified yet, but there is some concern about it mixing with water used to put out the fire and going down a storm drain in the parking lot.
The fire has been extinguished. The primary fire was contained the tractor with some extension into the trailer.
UPDATE: Around 3 p.m. Route 77, which was shut down in response to the chemical spill, was reopened.
This is the second in our occasional series on Fire Training Mondays. On Mondays, local fire departments meet and train. It's our goal over the next few months to visit each fire department and show a bit of their training and maybe learn a little more about the department.
This Monday, I was able to make it out to East Pembroke, where I saw the volunteers do an equipment check, learned about their original fire truck, and observed their ladder training on an acquired house.

Two men from Medina were taken into custody at 1:46 a.m. Monday on McAlpine Road in Pembroke after being found in possession of a number of reportedly stolen items.
All of the items appear to have been taken from parked cars.
Raymond J. Molina, 23, of 332 W. Oak Orchard St., Medina, and Shawn R. Wisniewski, 20, of 400 Erie St., Medina, are charged with criminal possession of stolen property.
They were jailed on $10,000 bail each.
Both Molina and Wisniewski were allegedly found with stolen GPS units, stolen purses and assorted stolen currency.
The case was investigated by Deputy Jason Saile, with assistance from Deputy John Weis and Sgt. Brian Frieday.

Billie and I stopped by Kutter's Cheese in Pembroke today, and while I waited in the car with our dog, I started looking at this old tree and decided to snap a few pictures. Checkpoints were set up in Genesee County yesterday by the Batavia Police Department and the New York State Police, leading to the arrests of 14 people.
The checkpoints were at Clinton Street, as well as in the Town of Darien and on Colby Road in Pembroke.
Sally C. Dixon, 39, of 5801 Byron-Holley Road, Byron, is charged with DWI. Dixon was stopped on Clinton Street by Batavia police.

Allen S. Dockstader, 26, 380 Council House Road, Basom, is charged with felony DWI among other charges following an accident at 2:24 a.m. in which Dockstader was allegedly involved in a two-car hit-and-run accident on Gilmore Road in Pembroke. The driver who left the scene was identified as Dockstader, according to a Sheriff's Office report, and Deputy Jason E. Saile reportedly found Dockstader at his home following the accident in an alleged intoxicated state. Additional charges: DWI with a BAC of .08 or greater, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a property-damage accident, unregistered motor vehicle, operating without insurance, switched license plate and unsafe backing.
Michael E. George, 45, of 2383 Lewiston Road, Oakfield, is charged with DWI and leaving the scene of an accident. George allegedly struck a disabled vehicle that was partially in the roadway on Bloomingdale Road in Alabama. George was allegedly found at his home by Deputy Howard Carlson following the accident. Additional charges: Driving with a BAC of .08 or greater, speed unreasonable/prudent, no left side mirror and refusal to take breath test. The incident allegedly took place at 9:28 p.m.
The ownership of two vehicles that may have been part of business transactions between Scott F. Doll and Joseph Benaquist remains in dispute.
The ownership claims were at the crux of a defense motion heard by Judge Robert Noonan in court this morning. Doll, who is accused of killing Benaquist in February, is seeking the return of the vehicles because a financing company wants to be paid for the cars.
The vehicles, a Pontiac G6 and a Chevy Malibu, are currently being held by the District Attorney's office because of their evidentiary value. D.A. Lawrence Friedman opposes both vehicles being returned to Doll, as well as a minivan owned by Doll's mother.
Noonan will issue a ruling at a later date.
An attorney for the estate of Benaquist, Robert Tronolone, put the value of the two cars at $18,000. He said the cars should not be returned to Doll because they are the rightful property of the Benaquist estate.
Attorney Daniel Killelea, appearing on behalf of Doll, asserted that both cars belong to Doll. That Doll purchased the Pontiac at the Odessa Auction in order to resell it, and Benaquist had signed over title to the Malibu so it could be sold through the dealership operated by Doll and Benaquist.
Friedman alleges that the title to the Malibu was forged and that Benaquist had title and insurance for the car in his name and had used it as his own personal vehicle. Friedman also said Benaquist purchased the Pontiac so it could become his personal vehicle. Doll was supposed to complete payment for it though the company's account because private individuals can't buy cars at the auction.
Friedman indicated payment was never made. He further alleged that Doll borrowed money against the Malibu.
"The people presents this as facts, but it's pure speculation," Killelea said. "The records show Mr. Doll purchased (the Pontiac) and whether he purchased on Mr. Benaquist behalf is pure speculation."
Killelea said that after five or six months, the state should have gathered all the evidence it needs for trial from all three vehicles, so they should be released to Mr. Doll.
Friedman said he wasn't going to concede that all of the evidence has been gathered nor that the vehicles would not be shown at trial to a jury.
Judge Noonan did not indicate when he would issue his ruling.
Joshua D. Quaintance, 21, of 31 Buffalo Road, Bergen, is charged with assault in the third degree. Quaintance and a 17-year-old companion are accused of striking another person in the head causing an injury during a July 18 incident on Richmond Avenue in Bergen. The incident was investigated by investigators Timothy Weis and Kris Kautz. Both defendants were released without bail.
Tonya Marie Weber, 25, of 52 N. Pearl St., Oakfield, is charged with criminal possession of stolen property. Weber allegedly had a pit-bull puppy that belonged to another person. She then reportedly gave the puppy away, preventing the original owner from recovering the puppy.
Cheri A. Himmerlreich, 45, of 111 Paddock Drive, Dewitt, is charged with DWI and with driving with a BAC of . 08 or greater. Himmerlreich was stopped for allegedly speeding on Route 98 in the Town of Batavia. Deputy Kevin R. McCarthy investigated and concluded that Himerlreich allegedly consumed alcohol prior to driving.
Bruce I. Fuller, 63, of 693 Sanford Road, Churchville, is charged with criminal possession of stolen property. Fuller was stopped by Batavia Police Officer T.S. Mart on Clinton Street after it was determined Fuller was driving a rental vehicle he allegedly failed to return when the rental term expired. He was remanded to Genesee County Jail on $3,000 bail.
Todd M. Kemp, 36, of 6 Lehigh Ave., Batavia, is charged with harassment. Kemp allegedly kicked and pushed a woman he knows yesterday evening. Kemp was remanded to Genesee County Jail on $750 bail. Batavia Police Officer W. C. Fenton investigated the incident.
Jacob S. Smart, 27, of 6437 Albion Road, Oakfield, is charged with DWI. Smart was spotted early Sunday morning by Sgt. Brian Frieday of the Sheriff's Office driving on Albion Road and allegedly crossing the double yellow line. Smart was also cited for failure to keep right.
Ronald Edward Johnson, 19, of 8081 Blackstreet Road, Le Roy, is charged with two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance. Johnson was reportedly the passenger in a car that was stopped in the Village of Le Roy for tailgating. During the traffic stop Saturday at 12:16 p.m., Johnson was allegedly found in possession of cocaine. Deputy Brian Thompson was the arresting officer.
David John Reschke, 18, of 9741 Transit Road, Stafford, is charged with unlawful possession of marijuana. Reschke was a passenger in a vehicle stopped for a traffic violation Saturday at 1:17 p.m. Reschke was allegedly found in possession of marijuana by Deputy Brian Thompson.
Jacob William Paniski, 27, of 2306 Brewerton Road, Brewerton, is charged with petty larceny. Paniski is accused of shoplifting from the gift shop at Darien Lake Theme Park.
Sammantha Nicole Frear, 21, of 2306 Brewerton Road, Syracuse, is charged with harassment, Frear is accused of pushing a loss-prevention officer while at Darien Lake Theme Park.
Joshua J. Swimline, 26, of 1270 Main Road, Corfu, is charged with DWI with a BAC of .08 or greater, driving with a suspended registration and unlawful possession of marijuana. Swimline was stopped Thursday morning on Route 77 in Pembroke by Deputy Patrick Reeves and Deputy Bradley Mazur for allegedly driving a car with a suspended registration. Upon further investigation, Reeves and Mazur allegedly found Swimline intoxicated.
Jeanna Marie Hattaway, 22, is charged with harassment. Hattaway allegedly pushed another person during a domestic dispute. The alleged incident took place yesterday at 12:49 p.m..

There was a semi vs car MVA in front of 404 Main Rd. Pembroke at approx. 3:30 this afternoon.
The car traveling West on Rt. 5 was struck by a semi tanker that was traveling East on 5. The impact caused severe damage to both vehicles driver sides. The car spun around at least 180 degrees once coming to rest in the ditch facing East. A City of Batavia Ambulance that was on its way to Buffalo on a transport was first on scene. Pembroke and Indian Falls Fire Dept. used the jaws of life to extricate the driver of the car which took approx. 15 minutes to complete. The driver was then flown by Mercy Flight to Strong Hospital in Rochester with multiple face lacerations and possible internal injuries on top of a pre existing medical issue that may have been aggravated in the accident.
Mutual aid fire dept called to the scene was Akron to shut down East bound traffic at 5 and Crittenden Rd, Corfu to shut down West bound traffic at Lake and 5 and to set up a Mercy Flight landing zone behind Pembroke Fire Hall, Darien for a ambulance.
Michael Zachary Rebert, 18, of 7565 S. Pearl Street Road, Oakfield, is charged with criminal mischief and unlawful possession of marijuana. Rebert is accused of being involved in a domestic dispute in which he destroyed property, including smashing a mailbox with a baseball bat. During the investigation, Sheriff's deputies alleged that they found marijuana in his residence.
A 17-year-old from Pembroke is charged with petty larceny. The youth is accused of stealing an X-Box wireless adaptor valued at $107 from Wal-Mart.
A two-alarm fire at a house in Pembroke was called in shortly before 7 p.m. and reported knocked down at 7:09. It was at 8219 Remson Road. A crew of four firefighters was sent in to relieve another four-person crew at 7:16, which had gone into the home to check for inhabitants.
The fire site was in the West part of Genesess County. No reports of any inhabitants, injuries or property damage yet available.
UPDATE (by Howard): I went to the scene and it was pretty much over by the time I got there, and not much to see. It was an electrical fire that started in the basement. There was some damage to the home on the ground floor. I'll have some audio from the incident commander in a bit. There were no injuries either to the residents or firefighters.

We already told you about the more than 100 people busted by the Genesee County Sheriff's Office, including the bus driver for Rock's entourage.
Now comes word from the New York State Police that troopers also arrested nearly a dozen people, plus wrote more than 50 tickets at two check points in Genesee County.
There was a traffic safety roadcheck on Route 77 in Pembroke, a DWI saturation detail in the Darien and a fixed DWI sobriety checkpoint on Route 33 and Colby Road in Corfu..
During the traffic safety roadcheck a total of 46 tickets were issued to motorists for a variety of charges including 8 tickets for violations of New York State’s Child Safety Seat Laws. One arrest for unlawful possession of Marihuana was also made during the roadcheck.

A driver carrying members of the band and crew of Kid Rock was charged with DWI last night following a traffic stop on Route 77 in Pembroke.
Joseph S. Devlin, 37, of 447 Arricola Ave., St. Augustine, Fla., was allegedly observed failing to keep right while driving a tour vehicle.
Deputy Kevin R. McCarthy initiated a traffic stop at 1:58 a.m. this morning and found Devlin allegedly intoxicated.
Devlin was locked up in Genesee County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
Kid Rock performed at Darien Lake Theme Park last night.
