On Friday, June 11, the Byron-Bergen FFA brought agriculture education to the Kindergarten classes. Members of the Future Farmers of America introduced the younger students to a variety of animals including cows, sheep, goats and ducks.
The outdoor event on the Elementary School grounds was a collaboration between FFA advisor Jeffrey Parnapy and Kindergarten teacher Ayn Gardner.
“We reached out to local people who own animals, a farmer brought his tractor in, and we’re also learning about different kinds of feed,” Parnapy said. “Both 4H and FFA members are presenting their animals and answering the kindergarteners’ questions.”
In some cases, the younger students were able to touch the animals.
“I like petting the lambs,” said kindergartener Evelyn Haywood.
“Looking around today, I already think that this is going to have to be a yearly event,” Parnapy said. “Everyone is having a blast and I’m so excited that we were able to provide this experience for the kindergarten students.”
Upstate Milk donated milk and cheese sticks for all the students and the FFA provided goodie bags for participating elementary students.

Genesee County Fair Supporters/Exhibitors:
We are ready to move forward with the 2021 Genesee County Fair being an in-person event, but recognize the need to ensure that there is a plan in place that is supported by New York State Department of Health and Local Officials.
These plans are to help to ensure the safety of all exhibitors, vendors and visitors.
The Genesee County Agricultural Society has been meeting frequently to discuss all options on whether we can move forward with planning an in-person/ live fair this July.
During this time we will continue to communicate with our Genesee County officials as well as monitoring other large events in the county and state to ensure we can offer a safe environment in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
We will also be working closely with the Genesee County 4H Programs to come up with schedules, safety plans and items that are necessary when planning the 2021 fair. We want to ensure that our youth are given the opportunity to show and enjoy their animals and other projects.
Genesee County Fair dates are planned for July 24th through July 31st.
Our hope is to be able to host the Genesee County Fair in person for our community to enjoy.
We just wanted to thank you all for your patience as we are planning the event.
We will be sharing information on our Facebook page, Instagram, website and other social media avenues. We look forward to seeing you all in July!

On Tuesday, Sept. 1, the Genesee County 4-H Program announced that 13 local youths completed their National Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation Certification on Saturday, Aug. 22nd.
The NSTMOP Tractor Safety Certification allows youth age 14 and 15 years of age to legally operate farm equipment for hire.
The program includes training on farm safety, tractor safety, tractor operation and other related topics. After completing the training course, youth are required to pass a written knowledge test and driving test to receive the certification.
Completion of this year’s program was delayed due to public gathering restrictions prompted by the coronavirus pandemic. The program was able to safely resume in August to allow participants to complete their certification.

The Genesee County Family & Consumer Sciences 4-H Club organized an outreach program for the other members in the Genesee County 4-H Program. Thanks to a donation of cans and bottles, the club had funding to put together “quarantine kits,” for interested members.
The kits contained supplies for eight craft projects and information on other engaging activities the county is offering at this time.
One hundred kits were assembled and distributed on Wednesday afternoon, April 22nd, in the parking lot of the Cornell Cooperattive Extension Office on East Main Street in Batavia.
Members were enthusiastic about getting the craft kits.
“This was an exciting opportunity for my club to share the fun we have each month during our FCS meetings," leader Julie Keller said. "The families that helped assemble and I had fun doing so, and it was rewarding to see members take home the kits.”
