Submitted photo and press release:

Jacqualine Berger, a labor activist, and current Town Board member and Deputy Supervisor in the Town of Amherst, formally enters the race for the 61st Senate District.

Berger was first elected to the Amherst Town Board in 2017 and was the top vote-getter that year. In 2020, she was appointed Amherst Deputy Supervisor.

Berger is no stranger to serving the community. She’s spent her career as an educator, currently teaching at SUNY Empire State College, and a labor leader, locally and nationally, through her work with New York State United Teachers and American Federation of  Teachers. Berger has a master’s degree in Early Childhood and Special Education from Tulane University. She’s a lifelong advocate for individuals with special needs, running a local Challenger Baseball program for children and adults with disabilities since 1991. In 2019, Empire State College awarded Berger the Altes Prize for Exemplary Community Service.

Berger believes she has the qualifications and ability to bring representation to the 61st Senate seat that encompasses parts of Erie, Monroe, and Genesee counties. She promises to utilize her position in the Democratic Senate majority to bring attention and State resources to the district and work with local municipalities to assess their needs. She cites the need for updated resources in school districts and improvements to aging infrastructure throughout the district as major proponents of her campaign.

“It is extremely important to the Town of Amherst that we have a State Senator who shares our values and understands our community. As an Amherst Town Council member and Deputy Town Supervisor, Jacqui Berger possesses the knowledge of our area and the skills to be an excellent and effective Senator in the 61st District,” said Assemblymember Karen McMahon.

In her role as Town Boardmember, Berger works directly with New York State to secure funding for projects throughout Amherst. Recently, she aided efforts to secure $783,000 for the Sattler Dellwood Park Green Infrastructure and Storm Water Project. Amherst will use the funds from this Green Innovation Grant Program to construct a bio-retention area, porous roller hockey rink and a porous parking lot.

Town of Amherst Supervisor Brian Kulpa stated his support for Berger, “As an educator, Jacqui is a champion for students, and as Deputy Supervisor, she is a champion for Amherst residents. She takes taken bold actions to improve Amherst, and I’m confident that her values will make her a champion for this Senate district. I am proud to support her.”

Berger is a resident of Amherst, where she’s lived with her family for the past 32 years. In addition to her work in the town and with labor, she serves as liaison to Nature View Park Advisory Committee, Planning Board, Youth Board, Recreation Commission, and Zoning Board of Appeals.

At the Harvester Center in Batavia yesterday, Ed Rath, a 12-year member of the Erie County Legislature, announced his candidacy for the 61st State Senate, running for the seat that Michael Ranzenhofer will vacate at the end of the year.

Rath attacked the one-party rule of Albany that he said has led to sky-high deficit spending, the passage of one-sided legislation such as the Green Light Law, the farm labor bill, and bail reform.

He said he will work to repeal bail reform and ensure the concerns of upstate residents are presented in Albany.

Rath is attempting to follow the political path of his mother, Mary Lou Rath, who was also once a member of the Erie County Legislature before being elected to the 61st State Senate in 1993, holding the office until her retirement in 2008.

Yesterday, after the press conference, Ed Rath complimented The Batavian on the quality of the questions we asked as did a member of his campaign staff.  We hear that often from elected officials.  We work hard to bring you the most informed political coverage in the county but to keep doing that, we need your support.  Please become a patron today. Kim Smith is a candidate for the 61st State Senate District. Yesterday she stopped in Batavia at the Richmond Memorial Library as part of what she calls a "listening tour," a chance for her to hear from residents of the district about what is important to them. This video is a quick introduction to the candidate.

There is a Choice for Senate in the 61st

By Jennifer Keys

In the 61st State Senate District we have a choice on election day. Elaine Altman is running against incumbent Michael Ranzenhoffer. Ms. Altman is a teacher who understands that our state government is broken. She is an advocate for kids, teachers, and families who is committed to working for us to pass the Women’s Equality Act, fighting for property tax relief, ensuring that our schools receive their fair share of state funding, increasing the minimum wage, and implementing tax incentives for job creation. Elaine is a teacher with more than 20-years experience. She supports students, learning, and teachers without the increase in testing that we have seen with the implementation of Common Core. Elaine believes that current mandates take power away from local schools and she will fight to give that power back! She is very familiar with the inequities in state funding for our schools and how that affects everything from the academics of our students to funding for our local sports. She grew up working for her father in his small business and knows how important local business is for the economy, as well as how difficult an increase in minimum wage could be for such businesses. I have had the distinct pleasure to spend some time with her over the last few weeks and have found that she is very down to earth, intelligent, accessible, and present. She is not afraid to speak her mind and to stand up for what she believes in. One thing I have heard her say over and over is that “one size fits all approaches do not work”. She strongly feels that representing us is a full time job and pledges to treat it as such. Elaine is endorsed by NYSUT, Working Families, CWA, UFCW, UAW, NARAL, Empire State Pride Agenda, NYS AFL-CIO and RGV AFL-CIO, NALC, Local Teamsters 449, OPEIU local 153, Northern Regional Council of Carpenters, Amalgamated Transition Union Local Union 1342, Eleanor’s Legacy, and the New York State Democratic Committee as well as the Genesee County Democratic Committee. Instead of just talking about it on November 4th YOU have an opportunity to SUPPORT CHANGE by voting for Elaine Altman for State Senate!
