Yesterday, we introduced a whole new system for handling the Deal of the Day. We've automated much of the work of managing deal of the day to make it both easier on us and easier on you.
For us, it will mean a lot less work.
For you, you will no longer be asked to remember if you're eligible to buy a deal. In the past, we had a requirement that you couldn't buy the same deal within a six-month window (that's now four months), but it was kind of up to you to remember your last purchase date. With this new system, the database will remember that information for you.
To make this work, however, you will need to register and log into your account to make a purchase. From that point on, everything with PayPal works just like it did before.
This new system will allow us to post deal of the day more frequently and at more random times, giving more people a chance to enjoy the benefits of these bargains.
For more on this project and why we did it, click here.
This is a new application. if you have problems, email details to howard@thebatavian.
Also, on the four-month rule, everybody starts fresh today. Prior purchases won't be tracked.
TWO NOTES: Two issues that came up yesterday.
The registration system for Deal of the Day is not connected to the registration system for The Batavian (for posting comments, for example). You need to register specifically with Deal of the Day to be able to buy deals (good idea, as many people did, to register in advance, so you're logged in and ready to go when a deal pops up that you want to buy before anybody else does).
When you are registering, it's just for our system. You will still need to log into your PayPal account to complete the purchase.

We've found many people like using Batavia's List since we launched it more than a year ago, especially for housing and jobs, but I'm among those who found the pricing scheme overly complicated.
So we've simplified it.
If you're placing an ad in jobs offered, housing or autos, there is a single, flat-fee of $5 for 14 days. No more tiered pricing or pricing for different categories. $5, one time, 14 days, that's it.
Garage sale posting remain free. And we've FIXED the software that controls it. So if you've tried posting a yard or garage sale and didn't see it appear, it will now appear on the map properly.
Private party ads for items for sale or wanted were free before and they are free now.
We're doing away with the business directory on the site -- for now, because I've got something else coming (speaking of that, look in the next few days for a whole new setup for Deal of the Day).
Finally: A CONTEST: Place a listing, any listing, on Batavia's List, between now and Aug. 31 and become eligible to win in a drawing a $100 gift card for Alex's Restaurant. No purchase necessary. If you need to post in one of the $5 categories, e-mail howard@theatavian.com and I'll send you back a coupon code for a free post.

Register today for our 4th annual Glow Corporate Cup!
At 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 4, Merrill Lynch in Batavia will sponsor the fourth annual GLOW Corporate Cup. Each year local businesses form teams to compete in a 5K race wherein the company with the lowest combined time takes home the GLOW cup.
Following the race is the region’s largest office party. Businesses are encouraged to set up tents in Centennial Park, bring refreshments and prepare to have a great time as they mingle with other local companies. Live music is provided as runners and supporters enjoy the post-race “AfterGLOW.”
Last year, the race included 700 runners and more than 1,000 people participated in the post-race celebration. In the first two years more than $30,000 was raised for the GLOW YMCA and this year event is expected to exceed last year's total in participants and funds raised.
“Our purpose is to bring the businesses of the GLOW region together for a common cause,” said Joshua Dent, one of the race organizers. “The after-party was intended to celebrate the outstanding companies we have in the region that are giving back to their community.”
The GLOW YMCA serves the communities of Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, and Wyoming counties.
“This year we would like to see even more participants from beyond Genesee County,” Dent said.
Registration is $25 per person and individuals must be 18 or older to participate. The route has been certified as a USA Track and Field Course.
All funds raised go toward programs for the GLOW YMCA. Register today! Click here for more information. Questions concerning the event may be sent to: info@glowcorporatecup.org

Those ugly stains and discoloration on your roof are more than just an eyesore. They are actually a form of airborne algae called gloeocapsa magma, and it is actually eating your roof. This algae usually grows on the north facing roof, or under trees, it is alive and feeding off the limestone in your shingles. You may think it's caused by road dirt, bird droppings or your neighbor’s tree. It’s not, but it is ruining your roof.
We are in our seventh year of using our low-pressure process to gently melt away this ugly algae, moss and mold. We use the process recommended by the shingle manufacturers association. We apply the cleaning solution with low pressure, equal to a garden hose from a ladder or bucket truck. This can be done in a morning with no disruption to your day. The results are immediate and stunning and your satisfaction is guaranteed.
