What Does a CASA Volunteer Do?

CASA is an acronym for Court Appointed Special Advocate. These volunteers are ordinary people, from all walks of life, who share a common interest in helping our county’s most vulnerable children . . . the abused and neglected. After you complete the training process you are sworn in by the Family Court Judge and are appointed to watch over and advocate for the children on your assigned case. For many abused children, their CASA volunteer will be the one constant adult presence in their lives.

CASA for Children gets grant so abused and neglected kids can have some fun

By Billie Owens

Press release:

A $2,500 grant that provides extracurricular activities for abused and neglected youngsters has been given to GC CASA for Children for the second year in a row.

The donation announcement was made this afternoon. The Kelly for Kids Foundation presented the check to CASA for Children Executive Director Ashley Hausfelder last month.

Genesee County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) is a 501 c (3) nonprofit organization that trains members of the community to become volunteers who advocate for the best interest of abused and neglected children that come before the attention of family court.

“While advocating for these children’s most basic needs, CASA volunteers have quickly found that these children need so much more than that," Hausfelder said. "These children all lack self-esteem and a feeling of belonging. Some have not known where their next meal would be coming from and quickly had to learn how to be a parent to their younger siblings. Genesee County CASA would like to give these children a chance to be kids, a chance to feel like they belong in this world and a chance to feel pride."

Last year was a successful one for the children who received services from CASA because of the Kelly for Kids Foundation grant.

“In 2014, our program was able to provide family memberships to the YMCA, karate lessons, dance classes, soccer camp expenses, a trumpet for a child to play in his school band, as well as the purchase of swimming lessons, etc.," Hausfelder said. "Thankfully, in 2015, we will be able to do the same, if not more."

For more information about the Court Appointed Special Advocate program or to become a volunteer you can visit the Web site at www.geneseecountycasa.org <http://www.geneseecountycasa.org/> or contact Ashley Hausfelder, executive director, by phone at (585)-815-7809.

Genesee County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Children, Inc. receives Kelly For Kids Foundation Grant.

By Tara Pariso

At the 3rd Annual Grant Recipient Luncheon for the Kelly For Kids Foundation, held on January 11, 2010 at Ilio Dipaolo’s restaurant in Blasdell, NY, Genesee County CASA for Children received a grant for $2,500 from the Kelly For Kids Foundation. This grant came out of the support of Terry Hills Restaurant and Golf Course. Each year Terry Hills chooses grant recipients that work with children in the community for such funds for hosting the tournament put on by Jim Kelly.

Genesee County CASA for Children would like to thank Terry Hills, Mr. Kelly, and the Kelly For Kids Foundation for their generous support. The funds from this grant will assist CASA in continuing our mission to provide trained community volunteers to advocate for the best interests of those children who come to the attention of Family Court as a result of abuse or neglect. CASA’s hope for this upcoming year is to recruit and train at least 5 new advocates that will be able to take case assignment and advocate for the abused and neglected children in our community.

If you would like information on becoming a CASA volunteer, contact Tara Pariso at (585) 344-2550 x 2331 or tpariso@co.genesee.ny.us.

Looking For a Way to Be More Active in the Community?

By Tara Pariso

This program is supported by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services through the Genesee County Youth Bureau There are many ways in which individuals can become more active in their community, and one of the most satisfying ways is to find an organization you care about and volunteer your time.  Genesee County CASA for Children is a non-profit organization that advocates for abused and neglected children in our community.  By becoming a volunteer advocate, you would be giving a child a powerful voice during what can be daunting court proceedings in Family Court.

A CASA advocate monitors court orders, maintains a relationship with the child or children invovled, makes reports and reccomendations to the court about safe, permanent placement of the child or chidlren, attends court proceedings, and gathers all case information to be reported back the the family court.

On average, after training, an advocate spends between 8 and 10 hours a month on their assigned case.  It has been shown that chidlren who have a CASA are more likely to be in safe, permanent homes, and have better opportunities for success later in life.  If you think CASA might be the organization that you would fit into, please don't hesitate.  Their are hundreds of children right here in Genesee County that are in need of a CASA.

Please contact Tara Pariso at (585) 344-2550 x 2331 or tpariso@co.genesee.ny.us for more information and application.
