CANCELLED: Stafford Founders' Day Celebration

FED Talks

Join us for evenings of savory meals, exciting talks, and group conversations on a series of topics that the contemporary church must address. Speakers will give talks that challenge, entertain and inspire. Be fed twice in body and soul, as we journey together in discussing how our mission to be hope in the world involves entering into areas of great tension, but also great need.

This week, John Keller and Chris Landon will be discussing the history of the word “Evangelical”, and its impact on the church.

Godfrey's Pond holds fourth annual Easter Egg Hunt

More than 70 children with there families attended the fourth annual Easter Egg Hunt at Godfrey's Pond yesterday. The club put out a couple thousand Easter eggs early before the event which started at Noon and continued through 2 o'clock. Cookies, drinks were provided to all who attended. Mike Hammon, caretaker of Godfrey's Pond, said the free public event has grown consistantly over the years.

Other activities included a petting opportunity with six baby chicks.

Two contests were held; one for who collected the most eggs and a coloring contest.

Abby Lampke was the winner of the coloring contest.

Bronze -- Trevor Pahl

Master Gardener Training

 Beginning September 10, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County will begin training a new class of Master Gardeners through our “Principles of Gardening” program.  Classes will be held at the CCE office at 420 East Main Street, Batavia on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 pm through November 19.  (There will also be a full day session on Saturday, November 8.)  Pre-registration by August 25 is required as the class size is limited.

Participants will enjoy learning about a variety of horticulture topics including: botany, plant pathology, entomology, soils & fertilizers, lawn care, vegetable gardening, weed identification, woody ornamentals, fruit, perennials and annuals.  Each class will focus on a different topic throughout the training.

Anyone interested in learning more about gardening may attend the course.  The fee for training is $225 per person.

This training is the first requirement to becoming a Genesee County Master Gardener.  Genesee county residents who complete the course are then eligible to apply to the Genesee County Master Gardener program.  (Other county residents should contact their local Master Gardener program.)  A Master Gardener volunteer should have a willingness to give back to the community and help put into practice what they learned at training.  Enthusiasm for sharing their skills and knowledge is a must.

Genesee ARC 'Sprout Film Festival' -- First Show

The Sprout Film Festival returns to Genesee County on Saturday, March 31, at the Genesee ARC Community Center, 38 Woodrow Road in Batavia. Sprout is a nonprofit that holds a yearly festival in New York City and opens its library of films from around the world so the "touring festival" can travel all over the country.

Town of Oakfield celebrates 'Majestic Lights in the Park'

The Town of Oakfield will celebrate the Majestic Lights in the Park on Sunday, November 28, 2010 at 5 pm at the Elroy D. Parkins Park (Little League Park). There are 42 trees that will be decorated in loving memory of loved ones passed, businesses and family themes. Please join us on Sunday for the lighting ceremony, Caroling and hot chocolate. Stitches in Time 2010 Quilt Show adds classes with George Siciliano

The Museum Quilt Guild will hold their fifth biennial quilt show, titled Stitches in Time, on October 15 and 16 at the St Anthony's Community center, 114 Liberty Street.  The change in venue allowed them to add classes and evening lecture with renowned quiltmaker, George Siciliano.  Space is available in both classes.  The class for Friday is titled "Size Really Does Matter" and Saturday's class is titled "Twirling Logs".  Pictures of the projects are available at George's website.

Space is still available for both classes, which run from 9 am to 4 pm both days.  Cost to non- guild members is $55.00.  Contact Elaine Ross at 748-4831 or elainejr@rochester.rr.com for more information or to sign up.  The lecture is friday evening at 7 pm.  It is open to the public.  The fee for the lecture is $5.00.

The show also features 243 quilted items made my the members of the Guild, a members' boutique, vendors, quilt raffle (photo above- $1 per ticket), door prizes and a silent auction to benefit the VA medical Center in Batavia, NY.

The show is open from 10 am - 6 pm on Friday, October 15 and from 10 am  - 5 pm Saturday, October 16.  Admission is $5

COVA 2010 Open House

Tonight I attended the COVA "Central Orleans Volunteer Ambulance" Open House at their headquarters in Albion NY.  Over 150 people were on hand during this occational rainy event to give thanks to all EMT's, Mercy flight, Volunteers, etc. Much of the information is on the website at :www.covaems.com/

CASA for Children Pizza Hut "FUN"draiser

Tomorrow, Tuesday January 12, 2010, Genesee COunty CASA for Children will be having a Pizza Hut "FUN"draiser.  To show your support for CASA, all you have to do is pick up a coupon and eat in or take out from Pizza Hut tomorrow and 20% of the total sales will be donated to CASA for Children.

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is a non profit organization that provides abused and neglected children in Genesee County with a trained volunteer advocate that monitors court orders, advocates for safe and permanent placement, and is a consistent positive person in the child's life.

If you or anyone you know is interested in becoming a volunteer advocate, or donating to CASA for Children, please contact Tara Pariso at (585) 344-2550 x 2331 or tpariso@co.genesee.ny.us.  There are always more children in our community that are in need of a CASA.
