Meet-the-artists reception at senior center

Young at Art, is a new exhibit by the “senior” students in Lorie Longhany’s classes at the Genesee County Senior Center.

It's at GO ART! Batavia Satellite Gallery, Genesee County Senior Center, 2 Bank St., Batavia.

A Meet-the-Artists Reception will be held on Thursday, Jan. 20, from 5-7 p.m. Exhibit dates: Monday, Jan. 10 through Thursday, Feb. 24. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

Opening reception for 'A Retrospective of Roz Hayes' exhibit

An exhibit entitled “A Retrospective of Roz Hayes” is on display at GO ART! Bank of Castile Main Gallery, Seymour Place, 201 E. Main St., Batavia.

It features 50-60 works by the late Rosalind Zeis Hayes, most of which are available for purchase.

An Opening Reception will be held on Saturday, Jan. 8, from 2-4 p.m. Exhibit dates: Friday, Jan. 7 through Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and by appointment.

Volunteers age 10 and up wanted for MLK Jr. Day project

RSVP of Genesee County and the Genesee County AmeriCorps program are looking for volunteers for a service project they will be holding to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Volunteers will be making -- no sewing required -- blankets that will be given to the Agri-Business Child Development Center. Volunteers can also help to create cards for the military.

The activities are suitable for ages 10 and up. The project will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 17 at the Senior Center, located at 2 Bank St., Batavia.

Elba Presbyterians celebrate Christmas Eve in barn

For the 30th year, the Elba Presbyterian Church will gather in a barn on Transit Road to celebrate Christmas Eve. One hundred candles in milk jugs will line the roads leading to the Yunker Farm.

A star at the top of the loft window can be seen at the approach. A rough wooden manger will be the focal point, while a newborn baby and the parents will portray the Holy Family. Rows of seats for the congregation will be wooden planks held up by onion crates.

First Night Concert in Le Roy

A First Night Concert will be held at St. Mark's Church, 1 E. Main St. in Le Roy on Friday, Dec. 31 at 8 p.m.

This is part of the First Night Celebration. It's free and showcases local talent. The church is open until 9 p.m., when the fireworks display will begin across the street on the creek bank.  <www.stmarks-leroy.org>.

Pianist at the Fedora Diner

On Saturday, the Fedora Diner will feature live music, with a local pianist playing from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The diner will be offering guests a free slice of cake with the purchase of a hot beverage (coffee, cappucino or hot chocolate).

The dinner is open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. from 2 p.m. and has recently expanded its menu and upgrading its service dishes.

Children's Gala this Saturday at Holland Land Office Museum

The Holland Land Office Museum is hosting a Children's Gala from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday, Dec. 18.

Cost is $3 per child; $10 per family.

Salvation Army Christmas Pageant

The Salvation Army will present its Christmas Pageant beginning at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 19 at its headquarters located at 529 E. Main St. in Batavia.

It's free and the whole community is invited and children ages 12 and younger will receive a small gift. Light refreshments will be served after the program.

The pageant is described as a "multimedia contemporary worship service which includes dramas, sacred dance, choir and much more."

Pavilion elementary students put on holiday concert

Pavilion Elementary School's fourth- and fifth-graders will perform in a chorus and band Holiday Concert at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 16 in the high school auditorium.

Pavilion Central Middle/High School is located at 7014 Big Tree Road, Pavilion.

Mane Attraction hosts Community Action fundraiser

The Mane Attraction salon will host a fundraiser for Community Action of Genesee and Orleans Counties from 2 to 5 p.m. this Saturday, Dec. 11.

There will be mulitple vendors, food, raffles and a Chinese auction.

Batavia Society of Artists kicks off Winter Art Show

The Batavia Society of Artists will host free, public reception for its 2010 Winter Art Show this Thursday, Dec. 9.

It is set for 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Gallery Room of the Richmond Memorial Library, located at 19 Ross St., in the City of Batavia.

The artworks will remain on display until Dec. 28, but the society says it will be "able to release art work early for UNIQUE Holiday Gifts!"

Pediatrician talks about 'winterizing' your child

Pediatrician Yeong Lee, MD, will discuss what steps parents can take to keep their children healthy in winter, especially children with asthma, at a free community education class.

It takes place at United Memorial Hospital’s Healthy Living Department, 211 E. Main St., Batavia, at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9.

Also, United Memorial’s Respiratory Therapy Department will perform free simple spirometry tests.

Trainer-driver Fred Haslip to receive Lifetime Achievement Award at Batavia Downs

The Upstate New York Chapter of the U.S. Harness Writers’ Association has announced that longtime trainer-driver Fred Haslip will receive its 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award.

It will be presented to him in the Winner’s Circle during the Upstate Harness Writers' Association's “Night of Distinction,” which will be held at Batavia Downs Casino on Saturday, Dec. 4. The ceremony is after the fifth race, at approximately 7:50 p.m.

GCC workshop on adults in career transition

Genesee Community College along with the Genesee County Career Center will host a workshop titled "Adults in Career Transition: Are You a Purple Squirrel?" on Thursday, Dec. 2. It will be held at the Batavia Campus  from 5 to 7 p.m. in T119. This event is free and open to the public.

"Purple Squirrel" is a human resource term for the elusive candidate, with exactly the right qualifications and experience, to match an employer's need. The term is synonymous with "ideal candidate."

Library holds adult class on making Christmas ornaments

Learn how to make a Christmas ornament using wool felt and decorative stitching at the Richmond Memorial Library.

This class for adults will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 14. The library is located at 19 Ross St. in the City of Batavia.

Jen Reardon is the instructor. This session is a repeat of the Nov. 23 class.

Registration is required to attend and $6 is due at the time of registration to cover the cost of materials. Participants also need to bring straight pins, fabric scissors, and a pen or pencil.

Book Fair at Present Tense to benefit St. James Restoration Fund

Present Tense Books and Gifts will host a book fair to benefit the St. James Episcopal Church Restoration Fund from Nov. 30 through Dec. 4.

A percentage of purchases made during that period with a voucher will benefit the church. Vouchers may be picked up at the church, located at 405 E. Main St., Batavia, or by calling 343-6802.

Writer to discuss memoir of childhood poverty in WNY at college

Genesee Community College will present the third segement in the Wealth and Poverty Around the World cultural series on Thursday, Dec. 9.

Sonja Livingston, award-winning author of "Ghostbread," will discuss her memoir and highlight childhood poverty in Western New York.

Chamber after hours is Dec. 9 at revamped Travelodge

There will be a Business After Hours from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9 at the newly renovated and remodeled Travelodge.

Chamber holds annual membership meeting Nov. 30

The Genesee County Chamber of Commerse will hold its Annual Membership Meeting on Tuesday Nov. 30 at the Batavia Party House, located at 5762 E. Main St. Road, Batavia.

Registration begins at 11:15 a.m. Buffet lunch begins promptly at noon. Cost is $20 per person.

Agenda topics include "Health care reform and how it impacts small business" and a review of 2010 and selection of 2011 board members.

Last day to register for 'All That Glitters Dinner Dance' for seniors

The Senior Spice Committee, a program of Genesee/Orleans Council on Alcoholism & Substance Abuse (GCASA), invites Genesee County senior citizens to the “All That Glitters Dinner Dance” on Saturday, Dec. 4. It will be at First Presbyterian Church, 300 E. Main St. in Batavia, from 5 until 8:30 p.m.

Registration must be received no later than Friday, Nov. 26.
