Elba Central School hosts Family Fun Night

Those looking for a fun, tobacco-free family night can find just that in the Elba Central School gymnasium from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21. Families with children in Pre-K through sixth grade are welcome to play games like Dance Dance Revolution and basketball; refresh with smoothies, ice cream, and other healthy snacks; and enjoy a DJ and live entertainment.

CASA for Children holds informational session for volunteers

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for Children will offer an information session for people interested in volunteering to help children victimized by domestic abuse or neglect.

This session will feature information on what being a CASA volunteer entails, as well as the testimonies of experienced volunteers. People will also have a chance to apply for a volunteer position.

No prior experience or training is necessary. Anyone who is passionate about helping children in the community is encouraged to attend.

GCC hosts walkathon for scholarship fund

Genesee Community College will host its "Hike up the Hill" walkathon from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 25. The walk will benefit the Genesee Community College Foundation Scholarship Fund.

Knights of Columbus holds BBQ chicken dinner to benefit local charities

Our Lady of Batavia Knights of Columbus will sponsor a chicken barbecue dinner from 10:30 a.m. until sold out on Sunday, April 25 at St. Mary's Church site of Resurrection Parish, 18 Ellicott St., Batavia. Take outs only.

Donations are $7 per dinner, which includes 1/2 chicken, macaroni salad, baked beans, roll and butter. Proceeds fund charities in the Batavia area. For advanced tickets call Mike at 343-3810.

City to celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day together

The City of Batavia will celebrate both Earth Day and Arbor Day from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 24.

The morning will begin at Austin Park on Jefferson Avenue with: a presentation on “Eco-friendly, Cost-Saving Energy Tips” by National Grid; a Seed Starting Display by the Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardeners; a composting display by GLOW; and a proclamation by City Council.

Talent show features Batavia High students, faculty and staff

There will be a talent show in the Batavia High School Auditorium, 260 State St., from 7 until 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28.

The show is open to the public and includes singing, dancing and instrumental performances. This year, both students and faculty/staff will be involved. The high school was unable to host its "Faculty Follies" program in the fall, so they are going to combine the two events on Thursday night.

First Baptist serves a pork lunch

First Baptist Church, 306 East Main Street, will be serving a pork lunch on from noon until 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 25.

In addition to pork, meals will include mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, a roll, beverage and dessert.

Tickets are $8.50 and must be purchased by April 18th at the latest.

There will also be a raffle for several different items, included a gift card to BJ's. Raffle tickets are $5.

Genesee County Youth Bureau holds 'Family Game Night'

A family game night will be held in the Senior Center, 2 Bank St., from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 29. It is sponsored by Genesee County Youth Bureau.

Dinner will be served, and each family will be given a free game to take home. People who attend will also have the opportunity to learn about the county services available to them.

The cost of admission is $5 per family of four and $3 per individual.

Horse rides and demos to aid horse rescue group

Attention horse lovers! There will be live horse demonstrations along with horse rides from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10 at Tractor Supply Co. in the Town of Batavia. The event will raise money for H.O.R.S.E rescue in Pavilion.

Batavia's own Joey Pero and his Band to perform at drum & bugle bonanza

Batavia's own Joey Pero and his Band will perform at the Curt Anderson Memorial Classic XVII, sponsored by Mighty St. Joe’s Alumni Drum & Bugle Corps.

It will be held starting at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 24 at Greece Apollo Middle School, 700 Maiden Lane, Greece.

BBQ chicken fundraiser to benefit 2-year-old with heart problems

Beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 8 there will be a chicken BBQ fundraiser at Clor's in Batavia to benefit 2-year-old Keegan Delcamp. It will last until sold out.

He was diagnosed with Bland Garland White Syndrome, wherein the heart's left coronary artery stems from the pulmonary artery instead of the aorta.

The tot had open-heart surgery last month and will need a heart transplant in the near future.

Holy cow! It's the Holy Family Brew Fest!

DO YOU HAVE CABIN FEVER? Here's just the cure for you! Come to the Holy Family School Brew Fest from 7 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, April 17 in Le Roy.

We'll have Beer, wine and local restaurant food samplings, a live band, 50/50s, door prizes and basket raffles. The school is located at 46 Lake St.

Registration meeting April 22 for summer golf league

A Thursday Nite Golf League is planned for May 6 through Sept. 16 at the Batavia Country Club, located at 2909 Batavia-Byron Road in Batavia.

A registration meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 22 at T.F. Brown's restaurant, 214 E. Main St. downtown.

Cost is $75 per player or $150 per team. Plus $20 weekly is payable to the Batavia Country Club. There will be four chances per week to win a 50/50 cash raffle.

Open House at GCC

Genesee Community College, 1 College Road, will host an free open house from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 17.

Interested participants will have a chance to take a full campus tour and learn about all that the college has to offer. The event will include brief presentations by representatives from Admissions, Financial Aid and College Village.

Somebody somewhere once said that parents with grown children should seek revenge by spending the inheritance before checking out. Just something Bill Hume Sr. might want to consider after his son, Junior, gets through with him Saturday night.

The old guy is gonna be roasted but good. And as Genesee County highway supervisor, he darn well oughtta be.

Youth ministry holds spaghetti dinner at Batavia City Church

The Batavia City Church's "T.A.G." Youth Ministry will host a spaghetti dinner at 6:30 p.m. in the Generation Center, 15 Center St. (right next to the church).

Tickets are $5 per person and must be purchased ahead of time. All proceeds benefit Haiti relief efforts.

'Reel Discussions' at Batavia's Richmond Library

The April "Reel Discussion" starts at 5:30 p.m. -- a half-hour earlier than usual due to the movie's length -- at the Richmond Memorial Library, 19 Ross St. It will end around 8:30 p.m.

Free and open to the public, Reel Discussions treats people to a feature film from the library's DVD collection. Attendees discuss the movie afterwards.

Batavia School Board meets on Monday

The Batavia Board of Education will hold a regular meeting in the Board Office Conference Room, 39 Washington Ave., beginning at 8 p.m., Monday, April 26. All are welcome to attend.

At 7 p.m., an hour prior to the public meeting, the board will meet in closed session.
