Holiday Hollow: 25th and Final Season of Family Fun

By Genesee County Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center

This year marks a quarter of a century for Holiday Hollow, and the last year of the Halloween and Pirate-themed mini-Renaissance fair that has delighted families for ages. If you’ve never been, this is your last chance to check it out. If you’ve gone before, don’t miss your opportunity to say goodbye with one last trip to this amazing October destination!

Holiday Hollow is full of surprises; from a Haunted Parlor to a Mad Tea Party, Talking Pumpkins, Fairy Tales and the Wacky Witch’s Spooky Forest cooking show, there is plenty to see and do when you visit. Get lost in Hook’s Dark Maze, or witness the Hollow’s famous pirate sword fighting. Eat your fill at the Popcorn Wagon, or show your “spirit” with a custom face painting.

This year, Holiday Hollow welcomes two new shows – the comedic “Witches’ Coven” and a new Gypsy comedy show. Both are sure to delight, introducing new acts and characters never seen before.

You don’t have to worry about getting rained out or missing the adventure – because Holiday Hollow is open every Saturday and Sunday throughout the rest of October – rain or shine. Hours run from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (with a 2:00 p.m. end time on particularly rainy days). Admission is $13 for adults and kids over 10, and $12 for kids age 3-10, with children two and under free!

When you’ve had your fill of the fun, take home a keepsake from Treasure Island or Cricket Cottage – a lasting memory of your time mingling with the ruffians, rascals, and spooky scoundrels who call Holiday Hollow home.

Holiday Hollow is located just off Exit 48A on the New York State Thruway (I-90). For directions or more information, call 585-762-8160 or visit their website at http://www.holidayhollow.com/Holiday_Hollow/Home.html

Olde Tyme Days Photo Gallery

By JIM NIGRO

As it has always done in the past, Olde Tyme Days provided a day of fun and entertainment reminiscent of yesteryear. This year saw a record number of people turn out  to enjoy the event and I thought Batavian readers might enjoy these photos.

Always a high point at Olde Tyme Days is the town meeting - here being called to order.

Who and what is the subject of this years meeting? Why its none other than Cornelius!

The doc and the marshall listen as Cornelius is accused.

The tension builds as the charges are brought....

The marshall prepares to confront Cornelius...

as local townfolk add a bit of fuel to the fire.

Others, however, find the proceedings amusing!

Though Cornelius "skates" as always, a sense of justice - or humor - prevails.

the maestro directs his charges!

a 21st century rendezvous man.

the little ones enjoyed themselves as the ponies earned their keep on this day!

The doc helps samples some of the homemade jam.

A West Jackson Corners side street.

what are these youngsters aiming at?

None other than Goliath.....

under the watchful eyes of this fellow, who also managed to keep an eye on a couple of roving explorers....those are his grandsons in photo below.

it was a great day at West Jackson Corners, with a good time had by all and by days end,

most were a bit spent.

OLDE TYME DAYS: Take a Step Into Yesteryear

By JIM NIGRO

Care to spend a few hours in a simpler, less complicated era? If so, then it might be worth the twenty minute ride to West Jackson Corners this Sunday, July 18th. Olde Tyme Days festivities will begin at approximately 11 a.m. right across the road from East Shelby Community Bible Church. There will be plenty of food and refreshments on hand, none costing more than a penny! Hot dogs, homemade pies (rhubarb, cherry, blueberry, apple, peach, blackberry etc.) homemade ice cream, homemade bread and more will be available.

Here the ladies are serving up homemade bread and other snacks. Note the open hearth in the background.

One of the woodworkers diplaying his craft. In addition to woodworking, Olde Tyme Days offers demonstrations in blacksmithing, tinsmithing, weaving, candlemaking and much more - and the opportunity to try your hand at any or all.

There will be horse-drawn wagon rides through the countryside and pony rides for the kids.

Lots of singing....

and laughter-inducing entertainment...   is the order of the day.  If you've got a free hour or two come Sunday, come on out to Olde Tyme Days where the food is a penny and the activities are free! Located on East Shelby Rd. two miles north of Swallow Hollow Trail.

Elba School to host Family Fun Night

By Gretel Kauffman

Those looking for a fun, tobacco-free family night can find just that in the Elba Central School gymnasium from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21. Families with children in Pre-K through sixth grade are welcome to play games like Dance Dance Revolution and basketball; refresh with smoothies, ice cream, and other healthy snacks; and enjoy a DJ and live entertainment.

"This will tie in with our tobacco-free policy," says school nurse Cathy Contant, "and we're hoping it will really reduce the (TV) screen time that families have."

Contant is one of the main organizers of the night, along with counselor Kelly Carlie and several teachers. It is also a senior project for students Sherday Schultz, Julie Marshall, Rebecca Morse and Meghan Andrews.

The four seniors agree that they hope the night will encourage fitness and family togetherness in a fun way. They are hoping that local families will, for at least one night, turn off the TV and spend more time together.

"We want to promote a healthy lifestyle," says Marshall.

The night will be co-sponsored in part by Reality Check and Genesee County Stop DWI.  There is no admission charge and is open to anyone with young children.
