A house fire is reported at 2 Willow St. in the City of Batavia.  

Smoke and flames are said to be pouring out of the side of the residence.

The occupant may not be home.

UPDATE 3:44 p.m.: The correct address maybe 2 Walnut.  The caller confirmed 2 Willow three times on the phone. She plots to Walnut.

UPDATE 5:35 p.m.: Interim Chief Dan Herberger said the fire was contained to a single room but there is smoke damage throughout the house. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. One firefighter suffered a minor injury.

A residential chimney fire is reported at 2274 Chick Road, Darien.

The house has been evacuated.

The Marshalls store on Veterans Memorial Drive in Batavia Town Center is being evacuated because of sparks and smoke coming from a light fixture in the building.

Just before 1 p.m., Town of Batavia Fire responded to 4018 South Main Street Road for a chimney fire.  

There was heavy smoke but no flames showing when firefighters arrived on scene. 

A chief on scene suspected creosote build-up as the cause of the fire.

All occupants were safely out of the structure.

A car hauler loaded with new Dodge Chargers and Challengers caught fire and exploded in Pavilion at about 2 p.m. today.

Apparently, the truck's brakes overheated. 

The location was west of the tracks on Route 63.

Two of the chargers on top of the truck caught fire and one exploded. A third vehicle also caught fire.

The Alexander Fire Department got a legally necessary nod of approval on Monday night to purchase a new $488,572 new fire engine.

The 2023 Spartan Rescue Pumper will be financed by the Bank of Greene County and as part of the financing package, the fire department needed the Town Board of Alexander to pass a resolution supporting the purchase in order to get an exemption on sales tax.

The department will be replacing the current Engine 7, which is a 1998 Spartan. 

Department leadership researched various financing options and choose Greene because of the 2.74 percent interest rate and a lack of penalty for early payoff.

After a $200,000 down payment, the department will finance $284,660 of the purchase.

The new truck has a Cummins ISL 450 HP engine, Allison 3000 EVS transmission. It can carry 1,000 gallons of water and 20 gallons of foam. It pumps 1,500 gallons per minute.  The Harrison 6K generator can power the LED lighting system.

While LED lights are harder for Mercy Flight pilots to see, using LED lights saved the department a substantial amount of money because generators with greater capacity are more expensive. Department personnel will use flares at night when the truck is deployed to a Mercy Flight landing zone.

The department will attempt to sell the old engine but Assistant Chief/Department President Dean Hendershott said the current market is flooded with used fire apparatus.  He said they will try to get the best price they can for it.

There may be a fire in an employee bunkhouse at the rear of a farm on Alexander Road in Alexander.

There is smoke coming from the structure.

It may be related to an ongoing law enforcement incident at that location where a person may have a knife injury.

A caller reported an unidentified fire at the Dolomite property at 8250 Gulf Road, Le Roy.

A first responder reported reaching a gate and being able to spot a possible fire in an unknown type of structure with heavy smoke.

Le Roy Fire dispatched with mutual aid from City Fire.

UPDATE 7:07 p.m.: A second alarm is requested.  Confirmed structure fire. Flames are getting larger.

UPDATE 7:09 p.m.: Second-alarm companies are Bergen and Pavilion with Stafford to fill in at Le Roy's hall.

UPDATE 7:11 p.m.: National Grid requested to the scene to cut power to the building.

An older woman at 167 Vine St. Batavia, using a walker, was reportedly helped from her house while it was filling with smoke this evening by an identified female neighbor.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation. 

Interim Fire Chief Dan Herberger said it appeared the fire started in the basement and the basement was fully involved by the time fire crews arrived on the scene and was starting to make an incursion into the first floor by the time it was extinguished.

"There is significant fire damage in the basement and the fire popped up through the first floor," Herberger said. "There is significant smoke damage throughout the house. There is a lot of damage.

Mary McCarthy, daughter of the resident of the house, and her husband Mike McCarthy told The Batavian's photographer Jim Burns about the apparent rescue of her mother by a neighbor and said she became aware of the fire when receiving an alert on her mobile phone from the house's Ring security system and she could view the smoke through the Ring's recorded video. The McCarthys immediately headed to the house.

The fire was reported around 6:30.

City Fire along with Alexander's Fast Team, with mutual aid from the Town of Batavia and Le Roy Fire, responded to the two-alarm fire.

Herberger said the fire was somewhat difficult to fight because the basement is set up for a home hair salon, so there are barriers in the basement along with chemicals.

The original dispatch placed the fire at the YWCA on North Street but when crews arrived, they determined the fire was at the residence.  There was smoke coming from the chimney, which on a warmer day, indicates basement fire, Herberger said, and flames showing from at least three basement windows. 

County records indicate the home is owned by Joyce Meisner and Mary McCarthy.  The ranch-style brick house was built in 1950 and is 1,715 square feet. The assessed value is $155,000.

On Monday, February 21, 2022, at 6:34 pm the City of Batavia Fire Department responded to reported smoke from a house at 167 Vine St. in the City of Batavia.  Initial fire units arrived at 6:38 pm to find smoke emanating from a one-story, single-family home.  One occupant of the home was assisted to safety by the City of Batavia PD and neighbors upon FD arrival.  Fire crews entered the home to find a large volume of smoke throughout with fire in the basement.  Crews had difficulty locating the fire due to its location in the basement.  The fire was placed under control at 7:32 pm.  Extensive fire and smoke damage were caused to the structure and contents.

Two civilian injuries were reported, however, both refused transport to the hospital.  No firefighter injuries were reported. 

The cause of the fire is under investigation by City of Batavia Fire Department fire investigators.  

The City of Batavia Fire Department was assisted by the City of Batavia Police, City of Batavia Bureau of Inspections, Town of Batavia FD, Alexander FD, LeRoy FD, Genesee County Emergency Dispatch Center and Emergency Management Office, Mercy EMS (as well as an ambulance from the FEMA deployment to the area), National Grid and National Fuel.

City Fire is responding to 541 East Main St., Batavia, where there is an alarm of fire along with a report of smoke coming from an apartment.

A first responder reports nothing showing. The apartment complex is being evacuated.

UPDATE 4:29 a.m.: Smoke is due to somebody cooking. No fire.

UPDATE 3:22 a.m.: City  Fire on scene reporting light smoke out of second-story window.  A patrol officer first on scene reported the fire may have originated in a downstairs kitchen and extended upstates.

UPDATE 3:23 a.m.: All platoons recalled to headquarters.

UPDATE 3:48 a.m.: All occupants were out of the two residences safely.  The fire is out and firefighters are conducting overhaul and checking for extensions.

On Friday, February 4, 2022, at 3:16 a.m., the City of Batavia Fire Department responded to a reported house fire at 31 Walnut St. in the City of Batavia.  Initial fire units arrived to find smoke emanating from a two-and-a-half-story, two-family home.  Fire crews entered the home to find a fire in the kitchen that was quickly extinguished.  Three occupants were home at the time of the fire and escaped unharmed prior to the fire department's arrival.  Residents are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.    

The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental by City of Batavia Fire Department fire investigators.   

The City of Batavia Fire Department was assisted by the City of Batavia Police and Water Departments, Genesee County Emergency Dispatch Center, the American Red Cross, National Grid and National Fuel.

Oakfield Fire responded to Crazy Cheap Cars on Main Street for a report of smoke in the building.

The building was evacuated.  The involved building was apparently a storage area on Water Street.

The fire is believed to be out now.

UPDATE 8:48 a.m.: Oakfield assignment is back in service.

At about 5:40 p.m., City Fire received a report of an object next to a vehicle on fire with the fire spreading to the vehicle at 18 Elm St., Batavia.

Lt. David Green said the owner of the vehicle had tried hitting a latch in order to open using a propane heater.

A canvas structure used to store lawnmowers and ATV is reportedly on fire at 113 Bank St., Batavia.

City Fire responded and reported the response will be set with the initial response.

UPDATE 11:29 p.m.: Fire is out.  Ladder 15 is responding to a fire alarm at another location. Engine 11 remains on scene at Bank Street.

A house fire is reported at 142 Hutchins St., Batavia.

City Fire dispatched.

UPDATE 5:05 p.m.: The fire may be in the basement.  Residents are evacuated. 

UPDATE 5:25 p.m: The fire was related to a washer and dryer in the basement; it is now out, and the home is being ventilated.

A garage fire was reported at 7504 Norton Road, Elba, at about 5:45 a.m. and the fire spread to the adjoining house and though the house was saved by volunteer firefighters, two residents and a dog have been temporarily displaced, according to Elba Fire Chief Mike Heale.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Heale confirmed there was some sort of explosion in the garage during the fire but the object that exploded was not identified at the time of his interview this morning.

The fire went to a second alarm, Heale said, to ensure there was enough manpower to fight the fire in frigid weather. The temperature was two degrees this morning, which means crews need to rotate frequently to stay warm.  The cold weather also creates slippery conditions for firefighters as water freezes quickly.

No injuries were reported.

Fire crews entered the home to find a fire in the attic space that was quickly extinguished. Two occupants were home at the time of the fire and escaped unharmed prior to the fire department's arrival. Residents are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

No civilian injuries were reported. There was one minor firefighter injury reported.

The cause of the fire was determined to be unintentional by City of Batavia Fire Department fire investigators.

When Brian Schollard, a deputy coordinator with Genesee County Emergency Services and a former Corfu fire chief, arrives this afternoon at 13 East Main St., Corfu, he found heavy smoke coming from an attic window and a man hanging from the window trying to escape from the smoke.

Since no fire crews were on scene yet, he checked with a business across the street and the business did in fact have a tall ladder available.

Schollard and a Corfu patrol officer worked together to get the ladder in place and Schollard climbed to the attic window and helped the man, who has not been identified, down.

The victim had cuts on his feet and possible minor smoke inhalation, Schollard said.  He was taken to an area hospital for treatment and evaluation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation for Emergency Management Coordinator Tim Yaeger said it appeared to have started on the first floor.

A structure fire is reported at 13 East Main St., Corfu.

There are reportedly flames showing with a person hanging from a second-floor window.

Corfu fire along with a second alarm including the City of Batavia's Fast Team, East Pembroke, Darien, Pembroke, and Indian Falls, responding.

UPDATE 2:47 p.m.: One person was rescued from an attic window by a former Corfu chief and a Corfu police officer using a ladder borrowed from a local business before the first fire crews arrived on scene. The patient was transported to an area hospital for treatment of minor wounds and possible smoke inhalation.  The fire was knocked down quickly by the first crews on scene.
