By Andrew Crofts

Latimer made it 3-0 with a goal about five minutes later and then earned a hat trick with a goal to make it 5-1 at the end of the opening quarter.

After taking a 6-1 lead into the halftime break, Latimer assisted on an early second half goal by Gaehnew Printup (Tuscarora, NY), earning his 100th point of the season and setting the single season points record. The Cougars scored eight of the final nine goals and wrapped up the WNYAC title with a perfect 4-0 conference record this season.

GCC's blood drives have saved more than 10,000 lives since 1987

By Billie Owens

Press release:

When the Student Activities Office at Genesee Community College organized its first blood drive in 1987, just three students donated. Twenty-five years later, those three-times-a-year drives have collected more than 3,500 units of blood, and Red Cross District Director Debra Miller says those donations have saved more than 10,000 lives!

Miller says each unit of donated blood can be used to save three patient lives through the use of whole blood, platelets and plasma.

"Because of the humanitarian efforts of GCC's student and faculty, 10,503 lives have been saved," she said.

Miller was on the GCC Batavia campus earlier this month to present an award to Student Activities Director Cliff Scutella and the department's technical specialist, Joanna Barefoot. The cup-shaped trophy recognizes the school for more than two decades of blood drives and the lives saved by those donations.

Additionally, the Red Cross reciprocates with a scholarship program created in 2006 to recognize students at SUNY schools who show collections growth over the prior year. GCC students have been awarded Red Cross scholarships averaging $500 for three of the last four years.

By Billie Owens

Press release:

The 31st annual celebration of student creativity will highlight various clothing design themes, including party scenes featuring "Cocktail Hour," "Fairy Godmother's Masquerade," "Slumber Party" and "Bridal Party."

The traditional runway show is the largest of its kind in Western New York with more than 1,400 attendees over two shows. It provides guests with a glimpse of the glamorous and ever-changing world of fashion. Two shows are scheduled for April 28 -- at 3 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. in the Forum at the Batavia campus.

"The class members are responsible for producing a traditional runway show, which has clothing from local stores, but also original designs created by our fashion design students. More than 160 models will take part in scenes featuring women's, men's, plus-size and children's wear."

Professor Dudkowski says the show combines the interests and academic pursuits of several college departments working in collaboration. Medina's no-hitter Highlights GCC's split with Finger Lakes

By Andrew Crofts

Genesee Community College starting pitcher Ruben Medina (Maracaibo, VEN) was nearly perfect on Tuesday afternoon against Finger Lakes Community College. Nearly. Medina started game one of the afternoon double header and allowed a one-out walk in the first inning to the visiting Lakers before retiring the next nineteen batters in a row, completing the first no-hitter in nine years for GCC. Medina quickly erased the top of the first inning walk with a ground ball double play and then set down the next eighteen batters on ten ground balls, five fly-outs and three strike outs.

“Ruben has done a great job for us all year,” said Cougars head coach Skip Sherman. “He was rewarded for all the hard work he has put in this year. He comes ready every game and prepares like he should.”

Genesee took the lead in the bottom of the first inning after Shakeel Newton (Christiansted, Virgin Islands) led off with a double and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Brandon Collins (Toronto, ON). The Cougars added two more in the first on a two-run double by Rafael Lozada (Santo Domingo, DR) that plated Tyler Koronas (Naples, FL) and Fauchedre Celestijn (Willemstad, Curacao).

GCC added to their lead with a run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Lozada, a run in the fourth inning on a solo homerun from Collins and two runs in the fifth inning on an RBI double from Mark Knight (Christiansted, Virgin Islands) and a sacrifice fly from Koronas.

The 7-0 lead was more than enough and would hold for Medina who knew throughout the afternoon that he was in the middle of something special.

“I knew I had a no-hitter going but I just focused on the game and took it pitch-by-pitch,” said Medina. “I tried to just spot my pitches and use my curveball and changeup to set up my fastball.”

Ruben Medina (red glove) celebrates with teammates after throwing a no-hitter in game one against Finger Lakes Community College on Tuesday afternoon

Genesee won game one 7-0 on Medina’s first collegiate no-hitter and third lifetime, as he threw two no-hitters in Little League.

Celestijn went 1-2 with two runs scored, Collins was 1-2 with a run scored and two runs batted in and Lozada was 1-3 with two runs batted in.

In game two, GCC starting pitcher Kyle Taylor (Ajax, ON) held the Lakers scoreless until the fourth inning when he gave up the game’s first run. The Cougars responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning highlighted by a Jean Rodriguez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) RBI single to take the lead.

Taylor surrendered a run on a suicide squeeze in the fifth inning, which tied the game and proved to be his final inning pitched in the game. Finger Lakes CC took the lead in the sixth inning, scoring a run off of reliever Dan Harms (Hamburg, Germany) and then added an insurance run in the seventh off of Collins. The insurance run proved to be a big one, as the Cougars managed a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to close to within one at 4-3, but could not complete the comeback and fell by the same score.

Overall, the Genesee offense managed just four hits in game two. Rodriguez was 1-2 with an RBI and a run scored, Collins was 1-4 with an RBI and Celestijn was 1-4 with a run scored.

Genesee (20-10 overall) will host Monroe Community College for an afternoon double-header on Thursday starting at 1pm.

'BigFoot Baler' is new demo at 7th annual Cool Kids! ECO-Fest on April 14

By Billie Owens

Press release:

Genesee Community College's Earth Club, Student Activities Office, and College Village are joining forces again with Cool Kids to produce the 7th annual Cool Kids! ECO-Fest – a fun-filled, educational event that increases awareness of important environmental issues while celebrating Earth Day.

All portions of the event are free and open to the public and scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 14 at the Batavia campus. Both indoor and outdoor activities will be happening throughout the four-hour event, which winds down with the Eco-Raffle of great green prizes, including the Grand Prize -- a 21-speed mountain bike provided by Adam Miller Toy & Bicycles. (You must be present to win.)

Many of the popular eco-opportunities will be back, such as collecting residential e-waste, worn American flags, rubber sneakers, plus the Inflation Station with Sloat Tires, as well as the Wildlife Educators Coalition and a full display of worldwide artisans' work from One World Projects.

But there are also be some new green alternatives to explore and enjoy.

The largest and perhaps most dynamic new Cool Kids! ECO-Fest program in 2012 will be the live demonstrations of the "BigFoot Baler" happening on the west end of campus. This massive piece of equipment will be taking "ag plastic," which is the bale wrap, vegetable row covers, and bunk silo covers delivered by local farmers, and compacting the waste into 1,000-pound bales. These will eventually be recycled into plastic film, fencing, picnic tables, benches and other molded plastic items.

Without recycling, agricultural plastics end up buried on farms and nurseries, burned, or taking precious space in landfills. The BigFoot Baler has been made possible through NYS DEC and Cornell University's Recycling Agricultural Plastics Project (RAPP).

For scheduling efficiency in the compaction process, Conservation District Manager George Squires asks that all farmers participating in "ag plastic" recycling call the Genesee County Soil and Water Conservation District Office at 343-2362 before April 14. The BigFoot Baler requires the plastic to be free of mud and manure; soils, forage and stone should be shaken off and smaller pieces that can be handled by one person are preferred. GCC student volunteers will  assist with processing.

"Each year at Cool Kids! ECO-Fest, we try to introduce at least one major new initiative that explores the innovative facets of environmental sustainability," said Donna Rae Sutherland, Genesee's Earth Club co-advisor and associate director of Marketing Communications.

"Last year we began collecting worn American flags and demonstrating bird banding. Two years ago it was collecting rubber sneakers. This year, we welcome the BigFoot Baler! The annual Cool Kids! ECO-Fest leads the charge in helping everyone learn how they can play an important role, each and every day, in building a greener future. It's not hard. In fact it's fun and it really is 'way cool.' "

The bird-banding demonstration by Tom Klotzbach is also happening on the west side of campus near the college's Nature Trail. He is a local birding expert and researcher, as well as a GCC alumnus and employee. He is in the third year of a three-year bird-tracking project with more than 60 bird boxes located at GCC and on the western portion of the Ontario State Parkway.

The seasonal outdoor effort starts in early April when Klotzbach begins tracking various species of native and non-native birds. Through banding and biweekly nest box checks, Tom is collecting bird data such as age, sex, fat score and mass, which are used to study migration patterns with the U.S. Geological Survey.

The 7th annual Cool Kids ECO-Fest also includes more than 35 exhibits, presentations and activities, inside the college's forum and cafeteria. As in years past, hundreds of people of all ages are expected to attend the event enjoying environmental fun and educational opportunities, and the more green things they do – the more Eco-Raffle tickets they earn to increase their chances of winning the mountain bike.

Among the ways to earn Eco-Raffle tickets:

•    Donating residential e-waste or electronics such as old computers, monitors, calculators, TVs, VCRs, stereo equipment, video games, and microwave ovens (No other kitchen appliances, please.)

•    Donating paperbacks books for American troops overseas

•    Donating worn American flags for proper disposal by Sheppard, Maxwell and Hale

•    Getting your tire pressure checked by Sloat Tires Inflation Station

•    AAA mercury hood lamp switch-out (for 2002 or older cars)

•    Being an ECO-Fest volunteer

•    Wearing green

From kites to water bugs to tree saplings, eco-tips to digging fossils, treasured trash time or battery tests -- it's all free at the 7th annual Cool Kids! ECO-Fest.

Genesee Community College is also excited about two other Earth Day celebrations this spring emphasizing its commitment toward a greener future.

•    Street cleaning of R. Stephen Hawley Drive happens from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., Thursday, April 12 with a post-cleaning pizza party sponsored by the college's Earth Club in the GCC cafeteria.

•    "Pillage the Village" from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 10 is the end-of-year yard sale at College Village. The event is free and open to the public, and will be located near the Village Hall at College Village, 8170 Batavia-Stafford Townline Road in Batavia.

Niagara opened up the second half by scoring the first three goals of the period and took their first lead of the afternoon. Modera’s third goal of the game cut Niagara’s lead down to 9-8, but the Lady Thunderwolves responded and regained a two-goal lead about two minutes later. Genesee made a late push and retook the lead after Cassandra Dembik (Pembroke, NY) scored to get GCC to within one, Arielle Lambert (Caledonia, NY) scored to tie the game at 11 and then Modera scored to give the Lady Cougars a 12-11 advantage. Cougars drop Hudson Valley

By Andrew Crofts

The Genesee Community College men’s lacrosse team played through the cold and snow on Saturday afternoon to defeat visiting Hudson Valley Community College 18-6.

Genesee gave up the first two goals of the game before finding the back of the net late in the first quarter. Marcus Palvino (Spencerport, NY) scored with just over six minutes remaining in the opening period to cut the Vikings lead down to 2-1 and then Connor Latimer (Whitby, ON) tied the game at two, about three minutes later.

The Cougars took control of the game in the second quarter, scoring six of the seven goals in the period. Gaehnew Printup (Tuscarora, NY) gave GCC its first lead of the game at 3-2 when he came away with a steal behind the Vikings net and then beat the Hudson Valley goaltender on a backhand shot. The Vikings answered to tie the game at three before Genesee ripped off five unanswered goals to end the first half, including a second goal from Latimer and Printup and second and third goals from Palvino.

The Cougars kept up the offensive pressure in the second half and scored six times in the third quarter. Chip Chapman (Batavia, NY) scored early and Latimer’s third goal of the game with just under four minutes left in the third gave Genesee a 13-3 lead.

Hudson Valley ended a nearly two-quarter scoring drought with an early goal in the fourth, but it was too late as Genesee got two more goals from Latimer and cruised to the 12 goal victory.

GCC's Student Activities director receives national award

By Billie Owens

Press release:

Few people, after collecting paychecks for their entire adult life, would say "I've never worked a day in my life!" but Cliff Scutella loves his job, and does not consider it work. He's the Student Activities director at Genesee Community College.

And his joy is obvious not only to those who work with him and the students to whom he is dedicated, but to his colleagues across the country who have recognized Scutella with a national award.

During the recent 2012 Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities (APCA) National Conference in Florida, Scutella was named the National Advisor of the Year.

APCA offers resources to campus activities programming departments throughout the United States, such as low-cost, high-value concerts, seminars and other entertainment programs geared toward students.

Scutella was nominated by his staff in the Student Activities Office.

"Cliff has a unique ability to bring together groups and organizations with his leadership qualities and winning personality," said Joanna Barefoot, GCC Student Activities technical specialist.

The award recognizes Scutella for his ability to empower staff and students to reach their fullest potential, and Barefoot says he does so by embracing "teachable moments."

"He takes the time to challenge a person to think problems through, consider possible solutions and work together to address the situation," she added.

For 22 years, Scutella has been a valued member of the GCC family and says, "I have a great life...I play for a living!"

His goal of providing enriching entertainment is evidenced by his bright and joyful office, which is virtually crammed full of toys and memorabilia. And his counsel is sought outside the department, as well.

"Many people throughout the college often come to Cliff for advice in solving issues that crop up in other departments," Barefoot said. "Cliff is great at thinking outside of the box, which also results in more creative and interesting programming that benefits the greatest number of people."

Scutella says "We recognize that our role at GCC is one of retention, and if we get kids connected, they will be more successful, and that is my ultimate goal."
