The reading is an open, free event, and GO ART’s Tavern 2.o.1 will be open. Sammy D. will also be selling copies of his book at the event.

Sammy D. is a fiction author living in Western NY. He currently writes general fiction, and believes that the messy stories and struggles of life are stories that need to be told. He is currently working on a second unconnected novel.

GO Art! announces pair of free weddings for lucky contest winners

GO ART! has partnered with more than TWENTY local shops, vendors and artists to give TWO happy couples the wedding of their dreams.

The contest is free to enter! To enter, the couple needs to send us a video of why they deserve to win, and fill out an application form. These can be found at goart.org/wedding. All couples are welcome regardless of gender or sexuality, we just ask that both marriers be 21+. We'll be sharing their stories on social media for everyone to vote on the winners, starting February 14, 2022, so we ask that all contestants follow us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/GeneseeOrleansARTS/)!

These special Batavian weddings will take place at GO ART!'s own Seymour Place (1) at 201 E Main St. The historic Seymour Place has facilities for a ceremony, reception for up to 35 guests plus a wedding party of six, a cash bar with bartender provided, dance floor, and bridal and groomsmen's suites for the wedding party to prepare.  The reception will be catered by either Eli Fish or Main Street Pizza, see details below for a full list of what we'll be providing!

TERMS & CONDITIONS

Couples must allow their images to be used for promotional purposes, both as part of their applications and all wedding photography & videography.

No profanity or nudity is allowed in submitted videos.

(1) Wedding must take place on a weekday, dates are subject to availability of GO ART!'s facilities and vendors. 

(2) Services include up to 8 hours of coverage, final images will be edited and uploaded to a personal gallery for viewing online; additional add-ons are available for purchase i.e. hours, prints, albums, USB, etc. 

(3) Select rings or a $150 credit towards the purchase of two rings 

(4) For a wedding party of six

(5) Select cakes or $250 credit 

(6) up to three tuxedo rentals, additional costs to be agreed upon between vendor and marriers

(7) barbering and updos for up to six people total, taken in any combination

(8) for a wedding party of six (total for both sides of the party), does not have to be used in its entirety

(9) Value of $60 per person, no combining, final design pending artist approval

HOW TO ENTER

For giveaways, there is no purchase necessary to enter. 

When you provide your email and enter in the giveaway you are also added as a subscriber to all the local shops, vendors and artisans involved in the giveaway. 

Giveaways are open to ANYONE 21 and over.  In this case, both people to be married must be 21.

GIVEAWAY

No physical product/s will be mailed out.  The winner's names will be on file with the local shops, vendors, and artisans. If at any point the specific giveaway is no longer available, GO ART! reserves the right to substitute the giveaway to a similar and comparable product/s.

The winner will be selected on the date specified for each campaign or post.

The method of selecting the recipient is votes cast by a panel(s) and social media subscribers.  GO ART! reserves the right to choose or eliminate and participants.

NOTIFICATION

You will be notified within a week of the final tally/decision. You will receive an email or phone call stating that you are the winner.

CLAIMING OF GIVEAWAY

You have five business days to respond back to the notification that you are a winner. As soon as you confirm your acceptance of the giveaway, you will receive all the official paperwork to be signed and returned within two weeks.

We are not responsible for the unclaimed giveaway after the 5 business days mentioned. If the giveaway is unclaimed within the above-mentioned period, it will be given to the next couple in line for the winnings.

Batavia City Council president Eugene Jankowski and City Manager Rachael  Tabelski faced off in GO ART!’s Celebrity Bartender Challenge at Seymour Place tonight.  Tabelski and Jankowski both said they weren't really competing and that tips would be combined, though.  All tips are donations to the arts council.

Join GO ART! on January 21st from 6-9 p.m. at Tavern 2.o.1 for a very special Celebrity Bartender Challenge! Our first competitors of 2022 are Batavia City Council president Eugene Jankowski Jr. and City Manager Rachael  J Tabelski. 

Started in 2018 GO ART!’s Celebrity Bartender Challenges raise funds for arts programming in Genesee and Orleans Counties. In these challenges, amateur bartenders compete at GO ART!’s Tavern 2.o.1 to see who can wow the crowds and earn the most tips for our donation jars. From community leaders to local characters these nights allow the community to come together to support local arts! Bartender Challenges occur most third Thursdays and Fridays. 

For 2022’s first bartender challenge Batavia’s City Council is sending two hardworking public servants to serve the public and bring in big tips!

Lifelong Genesee County resident Rachael J. Tabelski is eager to celebrate her new role as City Manager! Appointed in 2021 she plans to manage the bar with the same skill and friendliness that she manages Batavia’s administration. Eugene Jankowski Jr. has been City Council President since January 1, 2018- a graduate of Batavia’s own Notre Dame High School, a retired City of Batavia Police Officer and a competitive shooter Eugene will bring his quick shot to the bar. 

Batavia's leaders visit with old friends, make new ones, and support arts and culture-  a cornerstone of our community in the most welcoming historic building in the City.  Come chat with Geno and Rachael while supporting Go Art! If you have not been to Go Art! Or have not been in a while, this is an open event to explore the space and connect with the community and the art that makes it special. This event is 21+, bring cash to tip, and may the best bartender win!

The Owen Library, a redesigned room containing art books, a white baby grand piano, a fireplace, seating, and table games, was dedicated at GO Art! in Seymour Place in Batavia on Friday night.

The library honors the family of Jim Owen, himself not an artist but from a family of people who pursued the arts in various ways.

"It totally made sense to dedicate this library in memory of the Owen family," said Gregory Hallock, director of Genesee Orleans Arts Council.

Frank Owen, the family patriarch, was a musician, conductor, and music instructor at Batavia High School. His wife, Natalie Walker Owen, was president of the Richmond Memorial Library Board of Trustees.  Kathy Owen, daughter of Frank and Natalie and sister of Jim Owen, was a photographer, and Robert Owen, also a sibling, was an author and actor (as well as, like Jim, an athlete).

"My parents, my sister, and my brother say thank you from heaven and I thank you from earth," said Jim Owen during his remarks.

GO Art! offering grants for performing arts

Let’s celebrate getting together again with in-person art events! The Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council (GO ART!)  is thrilled to announce this cycle of mini-grants for live performance. Covid-19 has been hardest on the performing arts and on live art of all kinds, and we’ve all been eager to restart. To this end GO ART! has been given the opportunity to distribute grant funds to arts organizations providing live, in-person events in Genesee and Orleans Counties in 2021-2022.  While funding priority will be given to Performing Arts organizations, all events with a live component will be considered. 

GO ART!  is inviting any non-profit organization, or group able to partner with a nonprofit organization, to apply for funding for projects to be completed by June 30, 2022, featuring a live component to be held in Genesee and/or Orleans Counties. A final report regarding the project will be required 30 days after project completion. Applications are due September 30, 2021, and there will be no exceptions or extensions. The Statewide Community Regrants program is a regrant program made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Lots of LGTBQ+ Pride Month activities this weekend

The long "weekend" of events celebrating LGTBQ+ Pride Month continues in Batavia through June 13, hosted by GLOW OUT! and GO ART!

This evening, June 11, from 6 to 8:30 at the Batavia First Presbyterian Church (300 E. Main St.), there will be a Game Night and Royal Court Competition, for all ages. There will be food (individually wrapped), outdoor games and board games, plus free make-and-take baby sunflowers and sidewalk chalk art.

The Royal Court Competition at the church begins at 7:30 p.m. and is open to all genders and ages. It is judged on best costume and dance moves. The theme is DISCO. All are invited to attend. Masks are required. Regulations are subject to change.

Also tonight from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at GO ART! (201 E. Main St., Batavia) there will be a Disco Open Mic and Piano Bar hosted by the incomparable Drag Queen -- Ms. Figgy Pudding. This event will be for ages 21+.

GO ART! is opening Tavern 2.o.1, for the first time since the coronavirus shutdown in March of 2020, for the LGBTQ+ community. Come read your favorite poem, try your skills at stand-up and disco, or sing your favorite Broadway tune (bring your own music our look through our extensive collection). GO ART!'s own Theresa Kehl will be at the piano.

There is no door fee, but tipping your entertainers is encouraged. Masks are required at this event. Regulations are subject to change.

Saturday, June 12, is the annual Pride Parade starting at 10 a.m. at GO ART! If marching, lineup will be at 9 a.m. We proceed from GO ART's historic Seymour Place building to Dwyer Stadium (at Denio and Bank) where the Pride Festival will be held.

This will feature a cornhole tournament hosted by Pride Sports USA (volunteers needed to assist), and be full of amazing Drag Queen performances, including our headliner, Mrs. Kasha Davis from "RuPaul’s Drag Race"! Also entertaining will be the Buffalo Gay Men's Chorus, the Fortunatones, and more! Vivian Darling & DeeDee Dubois will be emceeing.

The festival at the stadium runs from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. and is the only event city requiring a ticket. Food and alcohol concessions will be offered for purchase by Dwyer Stadium.

On June 12 there will also be a concert at Jam at the Ridge in Le Roy starting at 4 p.m. The headline performer will be Ddendyl Hoyt, of Western New York, who is best known for her appearance on Season 6 of NBC’s “The Voice.” Tickets are $10 for lawn seats; $20 for VIP seating.

On Sunday, June 13 its Drag Queen Story Hour at GO-ART! at 10 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. hosted by Ms. Figgy Pudding. In addition, there will also be Drag Queen Bingo at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Two years ago, Batavia Pride had its inaugural year that was so well received in the community! After a year off, we are excited to come back bigger than ever with more events and opportunities for our community to show their PRIDE!

GO ART! announces cancellation of Picnic in the Park for 2021

"It is with great remorse that we must announce that Picnic in the Park, on July fourth, at Centennial Park in Batavia, will be cancelled this year due to COVID. Beyond the issues of COVID regulations, sponsors of the event have had to pull their funding, as a result of the restraints COVID put on their budgets."

Soon it will be LGTBQ+ Pride Month, locals celebrate June 10 - 13 with events galore

A long "weekend" of events celebrating LGTBQ+ Pride Month is planned for Batavia June 10 - 13, hosted by GLOW OUT! and GO ART!

"We are the only large-scale festival happening (here) this year and we want to make sure that as many people know about it as possible," wrote GLOW OUT Board Member Jacqueline McLean in an email to The Batavian.

Kicking things off at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 10 is a Pride Color Run 5K that starts and ends at Centennial Park. Rainbow colors will be thrown at the end of the 5K and there will be a DJ in the park.

Volunteers are needed to: put up 1K, 2K, 3K and 4K markers/signs; hand out swag bags and check people in; cheer along the route/redirect traffic; hand out water at the halfway point; and put out and take down traffic blockers/sawhorses; as well as time the race.

Jacobs hosts congressional art competition, announces winners

Congressman Chris Jacobs (NY-27) honored student artists and announced the winners of the NY-27 Congressional Art Competition at a reception this morning in Batavia.

“Students from around the district submitted pieces of artwork for this competition; we clearly have some incredibly talented young adults in Western New York,” Jacobs said.

“I want to thank all of our teachers and parents who helped our participants create and submit their work, and most importantly, I want to congratulate all of our contestants for their hard work, dedication, and impressive pieces. I look forward to this becoming a tradition we celebrate every year.”

The Congressional Art Competition was first created under a different name in 1982 and is sponsored by the Congressional Institute. In NY-27, three winners were selected, their pieces will be displayed as follows:

  • The First Place piece will be hung in the U.S. Capitol for all representatives and staff, and the winner will also be flown down to Washington, D.C.
  • The Second Place piece will be hung in Rep. Jacobs’ Washington, D.C., Office.
  • The Third Place piece will be hung in Rep. Jacobs’ Clarence District Office.

Pieces are judged and given their awards by an independent panel of judges. The winners for the 2021 NY-27 Congressional Art Competition are:

  • First Place: "A New Chapter" by Isabella Houseknecht from Batavia (colored pencil).
  • Second Place: Self Portrait by Molly Regan from Holland (charcoal).
  • Third Place: "Creation of Bee-dam" by Madison Dugan from Albion (acrylic paint).
  • Honorable Mention: Self-Portrait by Amaya Cleveland from Medina (handpainted negative-digitalized and painted on photo paper).

“Congratulations to our winners. I look forward to hanging these pieces in each of my offices and having a constant reminder of the exceptional talent in our district,” Jacobs said.

GO ART! reopens applications for arts grants through March 15

GO ART!  -- Genesee Orleans Regional Arts Council -- will reopen applications for Decentralization Arts Grants for the 2021 cycle.

Artists in Genesee and Orleans counties, as well as sponsoring 501c3 organizations may apply in three categories:

  1. Reach Community Arts grants (501C3 organizations up to $5000)
  2. Spark Arts in Education (partnering with local schools up to $5000)
  3. and Ripple Individual Artist grants ($2500.)

Helicopter Golf Ball Drop fundraiser at Terry Hills Oct. 24 -- win up to $2,000 cash

GO ART! is goofy for golf balls -- buy balls to be dropped from a helicopter for a chance to win up to $2,000!

The fundraiser for the nonprofit Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council takes place Saturday, Oct. 24 at Terry Hills Golf Course, located at 5122 Clinton Street Road, Batavia.

Tickets -- in this case golf balls -- are one for $10, three for $20, or 15 for $100. Closest to the pin wins!

GO ART! Executive Director Gregory Hallock says in an email: "Hola, aloha, bonjour, konnichiwa, hallo, hello amigo/friend/home slice, what do I need to do to convince you to buy some tickets? Please keep in mind that I am in quarantine, lol. Can I put you down for 3 at $20 or 15 at $100?"

Zeliff Aviation is providing the helicopter. The event is hosted by Terry Hills, Zeliff Aviaton and the Board of Directors for GO ART!

First prize -- up to $2,000 cash -- is based on the number of tickets sold. The minimum first prize amount is $500.

Picnic in the Park will continue virtually this year while flag hangs as usual in Centennial Park

On July 4th, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., GO ART! will be holding their 42nd annual Picnic in the Park, virtually, via YouTube Live.

During this event, they will have bands, dance performances, culinary demonstrations, cow plop bingo, muralists in action, and Explore ART! lessons.

Music performances on July 4th will be given by the Batavia Concert Band, No Blarney, Strummerz, Kelly’s Old Timers, Cannon Steel Band, The Old Hippies and Frank Reino (accordion).

Culinary Demonstrations will be performed by Chef Tracy of the Genesee Valley Education Program and Leonel Rosario of Mariachi De Oro. A menu and supply list are on their website at www.goart.org/picnic-in-the-park-july-4.

David Burke will be painting a new mural on one of GO ART!’s interior walls.

Troupe Nisaa Bellydance, The Rosario Family and Shanda Spink will be gracing us with their choreography.

Helping Gregory of GO ART! -- Online art auction kicks off tomorrow, plus gift basket and beer raffle tix for sale

GO ART! Executive Director Gregory Hallock (above file photo) has been diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. Hallock has done so much to promote arts and culture and all things good in the Genesee/Orleans area and it is our time to help him.

Medical treatments and life itself have become increasingly more difficult now that COVID-19 has occurred. Please consider joining us in helping Hallock with costs of medical treatments.

A fundraiser planned earlier this year was postponed due to the pandemic. Since then, we've decided to hold one online.

​The fundraiser is a collaboration between the Batavia Society of Artists and the GO ART! Board.

We are selling tickets $20 each for a Kegerator and a half keg of beer donated by Eli Fish Brewing Co. There are still tickets available here:   bataviasocietyofartists.simplesite.com.

We are also having an online gift basket and art raffle on Facebook starting tomorrow, May 15 and ending at 6 p.m. May 29th with drawing of the Kegerator winner on Facebook live.

All the baskets and art to be raffled will be posted on this event page on Friday, May 15th.

During that two-week time period, please bid an amount you want to pay for the item in the comments of the picture.

We have lots of great items! Be sure to take a look!

Items can be delivered to the winners within a reasonable distance of Batavia. They can also be shipped at an added cost to the auction winner to cover shipping costs.

GO ART! announces 'Quarantine' art contest, holding live stream art even April 15

GO ART! and The Batavian are teaming up to bring you a live arts event with an art contest, presentation of the Genean Awards, live performances, and a virtual tour of GO ART's gallery on April 15.

From GO ART! Executive Director Gregory Hallock:

GO ART! is seeking artists and heroes of all age levels to create a piece of art, in any media or size, in the theme of "Quarantine" and email a picture with the creator's name, grade level -- UPK - K, 1 - 2, 3 - 5, 6 - 8, 9 -12, college students, and adults (ones not doing the school thing anymore) -- to info@goart.org by April 10th.

Pictures will go live on GO ART!'s Facebook page on April 11th. The one with the most likes between April 11th and 14th will win the grand prize. A jury will also pick a winner from each grade-level category.

Winners and prizes will be announced live on The Batavian at https://www.thebatavian.com between 7 and 8 p.m. on April 15th.

I promise ye will like them.

The winners of the Genean Awards, GO ART!'s Arts and Culture Awards, live performances, a tour of GO ART!'s galleries and Genean's (GO ART!'s) birthday will all be a part of the hour-long event on April 15th. Artists, heroes, and villagers are all invited to attend.

GO ART! awards state grants for music, murals and more

On Tuesday GO ART! held a ceremony to award funds to recipients of the New York State Council on the Arts' Decentralization Regrant Program.

Below are the Genesee County recipients.

Reach Grants were awarded to:

  • Genesee Valley Wind Ensemble (Concert Season 2020 Mr. Mustard Beatles Cover Band Collaboration) -- $4,395
  • Genesee Symphony Orchestra ("Destinations") -- $4,650
  • Arc of Genesee Orleans (Film Festival and Art Show) -- $4,425
  • Holland Purchase Historical Society (Holland Land Office Museum Guest Speaker and Concert Series, Mystery Theater) -- $1,000
  • Elba Betterment Committee -- (EBC Music and More) -- $2,265
  • Woodward Memorial Library (Summer Arts Camp) -- $1,500
  • Genesee Chorale (2020 Series) -- $5,000
  • ACORNS (Music in the Park) -- $350
  • Gillam Grant Community Center (Cultural Connections) -- $4,993
  • Batavia Concert Band (2020 Concert Series) -- $5,000

The lone Spark Grant recipient is:

  • Judd Sunshine (Erie Canal Songwriting Project) -- $3,300

Ripple Grants were awarded to:

  • David Burke (12 Center St., Batavia, External Mural) -- $2,500
  • Bart Dentino ("The Spaces Between the Leaves") -- $2,500
  • Mandy Humphrey (Routes 19 & 5 Mural) -- $2,500
  • Eric Zwieg ("Slow Moving Grief") -- $2,500

All the awardees were grateful for the funding, which will help provide cultural and artistic programming to benefit the local community. It will also help create new works, and boost arts education for K-12 public school students.

Pauli Miano, a member of the Elba Betterment Committee, is delighted because the grant will allow her community to put on seven concerts in Elba's park this summer. Miano wrote the grant request along with another committee member, Kelly Dudley, who first suggested it.

The Elba concerts will feature area musicians, and there will be food and theme-related activities at each, most of which will be provided by local nonprofits, school groups, and businesses and restaurants.

Miano says all the bands have been booked and some other commitments have been made -- rock paintings ("Rock out with Bobby and the Pedestrians"), wine and cheese with Jimmie Leggs (jazz); and a car cruise. Shows start in June with The Corfu Pembroke Community Band (All- American theme) and run through August.
