GOP backs three newcomers for County Legislature election

By Howard B. Owens

County Republicans have announced their slate for the 2013 County Legislature election in November.

There are six incumbents endorsed for the nine seats.

Also nominated were newcomers Bob Bialkowski, Andrew Young and Greg Torrey.

Mary Pat Hancock, longtime chair of the legislature, will not seek reelection and Young was nominated to fill her District 4 seat.

Torrey beat out incumbent Esther Leadley for the District 6 nomination. District 6 covers Alexander, Bethany and Pavilion.

After years of allowing Democrat Ed DeJaneiro run unopposed, the GOP has nominated former Batavia City Councilman Bialkowski to run for the seat.

Members of the City GOP are reportedly upset with DeJaneiro for supporting funding for Genesee County Economic Development Center.

Lawrence Friedman was endorsed for reelection as District Attorney and Don Read received the nod for reelection to County Clerk.

The incumbents endorsed were: Ray Cianfrini, District 1 (Alabama and Oakfield); Robert Bausch, District 2 (Elba, Byron and Bergen); Annie Lawrence, District 3 (Pembroke and Darien); Frank Ferrando, District 7 (wards 1 and 6, City of Batavia) and Marianne Clattenburg, District 8 (wards 2 and 3, City of Batavia).

GOP blocks legislation to award seniors $250

The GOP does it again.

GOP blocks legislation to award seniors $250

"Barbara Kennelly, president of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, said it was a "cruel irony" that while Congress and White House were negotiating a deal extending huge tax cuts to wealthy Americans, "today we're told that providing $250 for America's seniors and their families is considered too generous."

Paladino endorsed on steps of Old County Courthouse

By WBTA News

(by Dan Fischer)
Many Genesee County Republicans are throwing their support behind Carl Paladino for Governor.

Genesee County GOP Chair Richard Seibert, surrounded by a host of GOP loyalists, announced his endorsement of Paladino today.

Speaking on the steps of the Old County Courthouse, Paladino recognized agriculture as Genesee County’s number one industry. He says, as governor, he would support local farmers.

"If the farms are going to expand," he declared, "and they illustrate to us that they will reinvest their taxable profits back into the business, we're going to give them a tax holiday. We're going to share that cost with them, and it's going to be done equitably and fairly."

Paladino says if elected, he plans to halt the Mosque project at Ground Zero.

"I'm saying that as of January 1, I don't care what (stage of development) the project is in, I will stop it. And I will use what ever legal means I have available to me to stop it. It's an affront to the American people, it's an affront to the families that were lost at Ground Zero."

Paladino has petitioned his way into the Republican primary against former Congressman Rick Lazio.

GOP just trying to survive in NY congressional races

By Howard B. Owens

According to Associated Press writer Devlin Barrett, New York's GOP leaders are girding for a slaughter on election day.

Several GOP congressional seats in the state could be lost.

"We are going to see a loss of House seats," said Rep. Tom Reynolds, a western New York Republican and power-broker who decided not to seek re-election this year. "The pendulum is coming and it's knocking a lot of people off their horses."

...

When Reynolds came to Congress in 1998, he was one of 13 New York Republicans. This year, he is one of six. In a few months, it could be four, three, or even two. The only truly safe GOP House seats in New York are held by John McHugh in the North Country and Peter King on Long Island.

There are many reasons for the fall: increasing Democratic registration, an unpopular Republican president, and a weakening of the state's conservative organization.

A Rasmussen poll shows that across the country, Democrats are leading Republicans in generic congressional races.

UPDATE: Rasmussen is calling the 26th district, where Republicans enjoy a registration advantage, a "toss up."
