St. Ann’s Community has announced that it will give approximately $400,000 in bonuses to 875 employees this week in a major show of appreciation and support. The organization’s workers are helping to provide around-the-clock care to residents and patients – the most vulnerable and at-risk populations of the rapidly spreading coronavirus COVID-19 global pandemic.

“The extraordinary performance of our employees during these unprecedented times deserves appreciation and recognition,” said St. Ann’s Community President and CEO Michael McRae. “We can only hope that the bonuses, along with other measures, help acknowledge their service and sacrifice. We would not be able to provide care to those most in need without our dedicated and brave healthcare workers.” 

Appreciation bonuses will be paid on Friday, March 27, to all full-time and part-time workers. Full-time workers will receive $500 and part-time workers will receive $250. Senior managers are excluded from the bonus.

In addition to the bonuses, smaller measures are also being implemented to show support for staff members. St. Ann’s is providing complementary food to all workers while on duty, and has also relaxed the uniform and dress code for all employees.

“Our team members are balancing work with the support and care they need to provide to their own families, especially during this anxious and difficult time for all of us,” McRae said. “They are incredible, and we are completely in awe of their willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty.”

Dorothy Dilcher’s 100th birthday was not only a milestone for her, but was a special day for The Greens of Le Roy.

Aug. 21 was not only Dilcher’s special birthday, but it was the first time since The Greens opened in October 2000 one of its residents had reached 100.

Dilcher was honored at a party at The Greens, which also celebrated all the residents at The Greens who were 90 or older.

Dilcher was born Aug. 21, 1918 in Chili, one of nine children.

“We lived in a little house with the Genesee River on one side of us and the railroad tracks on the other side,” Dilcher said.

Although Dilcher was the fourth born, and the first girl, she was not spoiled, she said.

“I had to work,” she said. “I was my mother’s helper. I was the dishwasher and helped take care of my brothers.”

She recalls one day she was going to take her little brother out in his wicker carriage.

“I tried to get him down the steps, and it went bumpety, bumpety, but it didn’t tip over,” she said.

With such a large family, Dilcher said they didn’t have a lot of fancy foods.

“We had a lot of ‘plain Jane’ foods, that had to be stretched to feed all of us,” she said.

Dilcher graduated from Byron-Bergen High School.

At a local square dance, one of her brothers introduced her to his friend Frederick Dilcher, whom she would later marry.

The couple had three children, Roger, Charles and Judith.

Her major goal in life was to be a good wife and mother.

“Helping my mother when I was growing up helped me to be a good housewife and mother,” Dilcher said.

It was most likely the sewing skills she learned from her mother which helped her get a job sewing blood pressure arm bands at Taylor Instrument in Rochester.

She taught herself to quilt, and later on, put her sewing skills to good use as a member of the Senior Quilters at the Office for the Aging in Batavia.

“That was a fun time,” Dilcher said.

Frederick died in 2005. Dilcher moved to The Greens in 2015, where she continues to be active. She likes to listen to music and watches a little TV. One of her granddaughters works at The Greens, which Dilcher said is “nice.”

“I love to walk,” she said. “I walk and walk around the circle outside when the weather is good,” she said. “Sometimes I go out several times a day.”

The Greens Director Kim Pasquale called Dilcher “remarkable.”

“She’s an amazing woman,” Pasquale said. “She loves to walk and rolls up her sleeves to get more sun. When we ask her how she is, she always says, ‘I’m fit as a fiddle.’ ”

“I was always a healthy old duck,” Dilcher said.

Actress Alison Arngrim, who portrayed nasty Nellie Oleson on the '70s television series "Little House on the Prairie" recently made a visit to the residents at The Greens in LeRoy.

The Greens of LeRoy is an independent senior living community and Arngrim was in town as part of the festivities at the Genesee Country Museum's Laura Ingalls Wilder weekend.

The actress took time out of her busy schedule that weekend to give a presentation at The Greens.

"Little House on the Prairie" is a favorite of the residents and Arngrim spoke to them about working with Michael Landon, what it was like to be on a televison show, its longevity and popularity and answered any questions that the residents had.

Following her presentation, Arngrim took time to visit with the residents, take pictures and sign autographs. One resident invited the actress to her apartment afterward to show her an 1800s wheelchair, one very much like the ones used on the series.

Kim Pasquale, director of The Greens organized the visit and said that residents thoroughly enjoyed Arngrim's presentation and were thrilled that the actress stopped by while she was in town.

A bit of cold and rain didn't prevent residents of the Greens of Le Roy from enjoying their annual fall festival on Sunday -- they just moved the event indoors.

From Kim Pasquale: "Many vendors brought their fall harvest along with some arts and craft vendors. The residents of The Greens truly enjoyed this special event."

One of Le Roy's biggest fundraisers of the year begins at 6:30 p.m. this Friday at The Greens of Le Roy.

It's time for the annual "Graze to Raise," sponsored by The Rotary Club of Le Roy, The Greens of Le Roy, and The Le Roy Village Green.

All proceeds benefit The REA Milne Scholarship (a registered 501 (c) 3 that is tax exempt).

The event is at The Greens of Le Roy and the cost is $15. Admission includes beer, wine, Red Osier roast beef, food stations, hors d'oeuvres and desserts -- plus entertainment.

There will be live, silent and Chinese auctions. The silent auction has more than 100 items and gift certificates from some of the area's finest shops and restaurants. The live auction includes: an eight-day stay in Orlando, Fla., including Disney Park Hopper passes; a helicopter ride over Letchworth State Park, including breakfast; 2012 Sabres tickets; Van Miller Club Bills tickets; a 48-inch flat screen television, and much more.

Last year more than 200 people attended.

The goal of The R.E.A. Milne Scholarship is to help students who reside within the Le Roy Central School District to further their education. Currently, each scholarship student receives $750 each year for four years. The scholarship is a four-year award as long as the student remains in college, and is awarded based on financial need. The club's hardworking committee members follow carefully outlined guidelines to award the scholarships.
