The Pembroke Dragons notched the team's first win of 2015 with a 27-12 victory over Holley.
Genesee County has at least one champion squirrel hunter.
Erica Kotarski, 13, in eighth grade at Oakfield-Alabama Central School, won the youth division in the Holly Fire Department Squirrel Slam on Saturday.
To earn the $50 prize and plaque, Erica bagged five squirrels with a total weight of 7 pounds 1.8 ounces.
As near I as I can find, HFD has not announced the other winners, but Erica's parents, Dale and Molly, are proud of their daughter and sent along the phone and information.
Erica has her lifetime hunting license and has taken all required safety courses, Molly said.
Holley traveled to Alexander in the opening game for both teams in the 2011 season. Alexander came away with a 2-0 win thanks to goals by Junior Midfielder Abby Shilvock and Senior Forward Julia Pettys. Alexander was playing in a different formation with many starters in different positions due to various circumstances but were able to settle down and control the game as time wore on. Early on the game was a bit ragged as the revamped lineup got used to playing in the positions they were in. Alexander had a couple chances midway through the first half but was not able to convert on any.
Sophomore Korie Leitten filled in as the the goalie and had a couple nice saves in the first half to keep Holley off the board. It was Leitten's first game at any level in goal.
Inside the final minutes Shilvock hit a cross to Pettys on the back post and Pettys' header nearly found the corner but was cleared out by Holley. However Alexander got the ball right back to Shilvock who hit a shot from 22 yards that found the top left corner of the net to give Alexander a 1-0 lead just before halftime.
Alexander came out in the 2nd half and began to get more of the possession and it paid off about 15 minutes in as Shilvock found Pettys with a nice through ball inside the 18 yard box and Pettys finished with her left foot low in the right side of the goal to make the score 2-0.
Leitten continued her solid work in goal by knocking a corner kick clear later in the half to keep the score 2-0. With about 10 minutes left Holley had a cross go off the post but it was cleared out by Junior Defender Gabby Kwiatek to again keep the score at 2-0.
It was a great all around performance by the ladies from Alexander as they got were swarming on defense to the ball and applied a lot of pressure high up the field on Holley's defense and midfield and that lead to a lot of turnovers while also breaking up Holley's possession and attack before it got into Alexander's defensive 3rd. Leitten finished with 7 saves to get the win and shutout.
Starting Lineup for Alexander: Korie Leitten (10th, GK), Gabby Kwiatek (11th, D), Eliza Vacanti (10th, D), Sydney Breton (9th, D), Ashlee Wolf (11th, D), Maria Dominick (11th, M), Mary Kunze (9th, M), Abby Shilvock (11th, M), Emily Alvut (10th, M), Lydia Spiotta (10th, F), Julia Pettys (12th, F)
Substitutes for Alexander: Morgan Woodhouse (11th, D), Sam Marchisin (11th, M), Nikki Draves (11th, F), Breyana Crawford (9th, F)
Alexander knocked off 2 time defending league champion Holley Wednesday evening 3-1 in the first game on their new field. It was Alexander's first win over Holley in over 2 years.
Alexander opened the scoring in the 18th minute as Senior Forward Megan Schmieder finished off a pass from Sophomore midfielder Abby Shilvock to make the score 1-0. Holley tied it in the 34th minute on a corner kick. Alexander nearly went back on top as Schmieder had a breakaway but failed to get a shot off before the Holley keeper slid to knock the ball off her feet.
In the 2nd half Alexander had the majority of the possession but could not convert any of their chances. Senior Midfielder Tessa Bigelow took a pass from Senior Midfielder Claire Hartl but rang her shot off the crossbar to keep the score tied at 1. In the 75th minute of the game Junior Forward Julia Pettys knocked in a rebound of her own shot to put Alexander back on top (her 5th goal of the season). In the 78th minute Shilvock ripped a 30 yard shot into the top corner to put the game out of reach.
Alexander's Senior Keeper Hannah Wilson picked up her 2nd win of the season with 8 stops in goal.
Alexander's record is now 2-0-1 overall and 1-0 in the league. Holley drops to 0-1.
Alexander's next game is Friday on the road @ Attica at 4:30pm. Attica is 2-0 coming into the game.
A 45-year-old Holley man is accused of assaulting and robbing a Byron resident of three long guns while in his home at 3:30 a.m., Saturday.
Taken into custody yesterday was Darrell Bruce Reid, of 4 N. Main St., Holley.
Chief Deputy Jerome Brewster said the victim had met Reid a short time before Saturday and the two men were talking in the victim's apartment when Reid allegedly assaulted the victim.
The victim suffered a broken nose and cut above his eye that required stitches.
While the victim had met Reid, he didn't know his full name, which led to the Sheriff's Office taking a couple of days to track down the suspect, Brewster said.
Reid, who was jailed without bail, is charged with robbery, 2nd, assault, 2nd, and three counts of grand larceny.
He is scheduled to return to Byron Town Court at 5 p.m., May 17.
Alexander picked up 2 wins over the last week with a 3-1 win over Attica last Thursday and a 2-0 win in Kendall Wednesday night.
In the win over Attica, Tessa Bigelow, Anna Dominick, and Kylie Bank had the goals with Dominick picking up 2 assists and Summer Bliss picking up the other one. The score was 1-1 at the half before Alexander scored 2 unanswered in the 2nd half to win the game.
Last night Alexander had a great 1st half picking up goals from Megan Schmieder (from Anna Dominick) and Julia Pettys (from Amber Finan) to get out to a 2-0 halftime lead. The 2nd half Kendall put on a ton of pressure but Junior Keeper Hannah Wilson made 7 saves in net picking up her 7th shutout of the season with the defense playing solid in front of her. Savannah VanSon cleared a ball off the goal line after Wilson had made the initial save.
Holley and Byron-Bergen played to a 0-0 tie meaning that Friday night Alexander travels to Holley for a 6:30 contest that will decide the GR Division 1 (and GR League) champion. Alexander enters the game 12-2-1 (11-2-1 league) while Holley enters the game 13-1-1 (12-1-1 league). Holley needs only a tie to win the league title. Alexander needs a win which would knot the teams at 12-2-1 in the league with a 1-1 record against each other and the league title would come down to divisional record where Alexander would then have the advantage. The first time these two teams played Holley picked up a 2-1 win in Alexander.
Things looked good for Notre Dame at the end of the first half this afternoon, but in the end Holley took control of the game and went on to win 14-7.
It was the first loss of the year for the Irish and continued Holley's dramatic turn around from an 0-8 in 2008.
It was a tale of two halves, according to Notre Dame Head Coach Rick Mancuso, who said his team failed to execute in the third and fourth quarters.
"We had a good mix of run and a good mix of of pass (in the first half)," said Mancuso. "I thought we played with passion. We played with emotion. I thought we came out early in the second half and we started off with a penalty right in the first series and that was just kind of the way that we played. We lost our focus and we lost our discipline and we didn’t play a good second half."
In that first half, Notre Dame did a good job of stuffing Holley's powerful running game. When Holley went up the middle, the Irish line was there to push back the pile. On sweeps, the pursuit was aggressive, lead by Gianni Zambito, to keep Holley's backs from turning the corner. A couple of sweeps turned into lost yardage for the Hawks.
After the game, Hawks Head Coach Chad DeRock bristled at the idea that the Irish were sticking it to his guys during the first half.
"We played our game -- bend, don’t break," DeRock said. "We gave up only seven points to one of the best offenses around here. We bend, we don’t break. They’re going to have big plays. You’ve got to accept that when you’ve got Bochicchio at QB and Pratt and Richter and Zambito out there. Those are big play guys. We just didn’t want to get beat with the big, big play. We got burned on one. Other than that, we did what we had to do."
That one big play was a 35-yard TD pass early in the second quarter to a wide open Zambito from Nick Bochicchio.
The successful drive was sparked by a Cam McDonald fumble recovery late in the first quarter. The turnover stopped a long drive by the Hawks that had them on a seeming precipice of a first score of the game.
Instead, Notre Dame was able to end the half with a 7-0 lead against a Holley team that scored at least 30 points in three of its four previous wins.
ND opened the half with the ball, an illegal motion penalty the Irish in the hole and a few downs later ND was punting it away. It wasn't long after before Mike Perincano was crossing the goal line on a 30-yard rush to pull the Hawks within a point of the Irish (Holley failed to score on a two-point conversion try, so the score stood at 7-6).
On its next possession, the Irish moved the ball down field and were within striking distance of another score when Bochicchio was picked off by Guy Hills. That's the last time the Irish really threatened to put points on the board.
Two possessions later, Chad Barhydt, who took over at QB for Hills, who was injured in the fourth quarter, carried the ball in on a two-yard TD run, and with the two-point conversion, Holley sealed its 14-7 victory.
"My hats off to Holley," Mancuso said. "They played terrific. They were up to the challenge and they’re a great team. They’ve got a lot of really great kids. They work hard and their coaching staff does a great job with them. I wish we cold have done them justice and played them a little bit better."
Coach DeRock said his team, even at 5-0 and assured of at least a share of the Genesee Region title, is still taking the season one week at a time.
"Everybody says this was the GR championship, but it’s not," DeRock said. "It’s another game on our schedule. We have another game next week and another game after that.
"Attica’s a great team," he added. "Brad Clark had 295 yards rushing last night. I scouted the game. He’s a great running back, so we’re not taking them lightly by any means."
Pernicano finished the game with 52 yards on six carries. Sean Baylor had 12 carries for 68 yards. Barhydt posted 42 rushing yards.
For the Irish, now 4-1, Mike Pratt rushed for 65 yards on 20 carries. Zambito contributed 90 total yards on four receptions.
What's the recipe for "The Big Game"? Well, start with two undefeated teams in the fifth week of the season. Make sure one of them has a storied history and is hosting the game on homecoming weekend. The other team should be up an upstart, a new program that for the first time is emerging as a powerful, tough-to-beat squad.
That's a Big Game.
And's the situation tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. when Notre Dame hosts the Holley Hawks Notre Dame. The teams clash as division rivals with matching records of 4-0.
“They’ve (Holley) got a great group of kids and we’re probably the underdog here" said Notre Dame's head coach, Rick Mancuso. "We’re fighting an uphill battle, but we’re looking forward to the challenge."
If you put any stock in such things, MaxPreps ranks the Fighting Irish 121st in the state, and Holley at 155th.
The Irish have scored 101 points on the season, Holley, 114. ND's has allowed 35 points, with Holley being a bit stingier, giving up only 23.
The Hawks have a reputation for being a strong, hard-hitting team, and Coach Mancuso acknowledges the Hawks are a tough, well-coached team, but that doesn't make them much different from Attica and Oakfield. Both of those squads have fallen once each this season to the Irish.
"We’ve been against some tough, strong, hard-hitting teams and Holley’s no different than them," Mancuso said, "other than Holley’s maybe a little bit bigger and they have a little bit better skill level in their back field."
Mancuso said the Hawks probably have the best four backs in the league.
"That gives them an advantage," he said.
"We've got to come out and we've really got to work at it," Mancuso said. "We can't get down they have a big play. We can't get too high and we can't get too low. It's a big challenge."
He said his players are excited about the big game.
It sounds like a recipe for a can't-miss match up.
AUDIO: Interview with Head Coach Rick Mancuso (mp3)
Up in Holley, an interesting story line is developing in the 2009 Genesee Region football season. A team that rarely won over the first few years of its young football program seems suddenly unbeatable.
The Alexander Trojans found out firsthand today just how invincible Holley seems to be at just past the halfway point in the season.
The Trojans were dominated on both sides of the ball for most of four quarters and dropped to 2-2 with a 32-10 loss.
The Hawks move to 4-0 and face a challenge next week to their seeming invincibility when they butt heads with the division’s only other undefeated team, the Fighting Irish, at Notre Dame.
Alexander Head Coach Dave Radley expressed some dissatisfaction with his team after the game saying his players didn’t come ready to play and seemed to take Holley for granted.
On the other side of the field, Chad DeRock said his team is bearing the fruit of three or four years of extra effort.
“Our focus this season was on making history,” DeRock said. “I don’t know what the past record was – two and 60 or something – but that doesn’t matter. I’m happy for my seniors who’ve put in the time. I promised them, if you put in the time, you’ll see results. They put in the time. My juniors put in the time. My sophomores and freshmen have put in the time. My seniors are the most dedicated group of I’ve ever worked with. I’m proud of them. They deserve it.”
Holley opened the game by methodically marching the ball down the field only to lose it on the two-yard line to a fumble.
The Trojans, however, were unable to capitalize on a potential shift of momentum, coughing up the ball on the 20-yard line a few plays later.
It didn’t take long, then, for Sean Baylor to put six on the board for the Hawks with a six-yard run.
Alexander made one last stab at making a game of it early in the second quarter when Lucas Czechowski booted an impressive 35-yard field goal to make the score 6-3, but except for a little spark late in the fourth quarter, the game was all Holley’s.
By the half, the score was 20-3 after TD runs by Baylor and Guy Hills.
Turnovers were a key factor (four total by Alexander), including an interception for a 40-yard touchdown return in the fourth quarter by Holley's Mike Pernicano, which pushed the margin to 32-3 (Baylor had another touchdown run in the third quarter).
After another Pernicano interception, Holley started moving the ball toward the end zone again when the Alexander defense managed to force a fourth down.
Holley decided to try a long field goal, but the pop-up kick came up well short of the goal line and #88 Steve Schaffer found himself in an open field just waiting for the ball to come down. He then darted to the far sideline and carried the ball 80 yards before being forced out to put his team in the red zone.
Alexander capitalized on the opportunity, finally pushing the ball across the goal line on a one-yard run by Jared Quinn.
And that’s how the game would end – 32-10, Holley.
Notre Dame Head Coach Rick Mancuso had a keen eye on the game through all four quarters. It will be interesting to find out later this week what he thinks about the upcoming clash of two teams seemingly putting it all together in 2009.

Alexander suffered their first loss of the season Tuesday at home 2-1 to Holley. Alexander held a large advantage in shots (12 to 6) but the only thing the matters is the final score line and that was in favor of Holley.
Alexander got off to a quick start putting a large amount of pressure on the Holley net but was unable to get one in the back of the net. Around the 10 minute mark Holley got their first good push down the field and Alexander Goalkeeper made an excellent diving save on the first shot that was hit, but a crashing Holley midfielder cleaned up the rebound and it was put in the net for a 1-0 Holley lead.
Alexander nearly tied it 5 minutes later as midfielder Autumn Atkinson hit a great direct kick from 19 yards but Holley keeper Julie Brooks made a great diving stop and the rebound was knocked away by Holley to keep it at 1-0. Alexander looked strong possessing the ball throughout the remainder of the first half but couldn't put the final pass together or get the finish around the front of the net that they needed.
The 2nd half started in a similar fashion to the 1st half for Alexander as they immediately went down the field and put pressure on Holley. However 3 minutes into the half Holley came down the field and had a quick give and go in the middle of the field that resulted in Holley's midfielder Emily Troup putting a ball in the net for the 2-0 lead.
Alexander continued to control the ball but still struggled to complete the final dangerous pass or get a shot on frame (several were sent over and wide) to get back in the game. With 20 minutes left Forward Morgan Mattice found Forward Anna Dominick who beat 2 defenders and stuck the ball in the net to make it 2-1. Alexander continued to push forward but the bad play in the final 3rd continued and they fell by a 2-1 score.
With the loss Alexander drops from 1st to 3rd in the GR standings. Pembroke beat Kendall 1-0 and jumped to 1st while Holley moves into 2nd. Alexander faces Pembroke on Thursday in Pembroke.
Top-seeded Elba rolled in the quarterfinals of the Section 5 Class DD tournament Thursday, whipping No. 9 Bolivar-Richburg 61-37.
Chelsie Pangrazio led all scorers with 11 points with Meg Stucko pitching in eight points and six rebounds.
McKenzie Bezon scored nine points with Missy Call, Cassy Engle and Meg Stucko getting eight points apiece. Sarah Schwartzmeyer had seven steals to go with her six points.
Carissa Hisel had nine points for B-R (11-10).
The Lancers improve to 19-2 and will move on to the semifinals Tuesday.
--------------------------------------------------------------
No. 5 Holley had a pretty convincing 50-38 win over No. 4 Greece Odyssey in the Class B sectional.
The Hawks had a 16-9 second quarter advantage to pull away.
Julie Brooks had 18 points and eight boards with Corinne Vanschoick adding 14 points, eight rebounds and five steals.
Kourtney Damann scored a game-high 27 points for the Leopards (8-13).
Holley is now 7-12.
While Ryan Darch was disappointed that he didn't win a SuperSectional title last weekend, he still has hopes to win a New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship this weekend in Albany.
Darch lost a frustrating match to Canisteo-Greenwood's Brandon Mills in the state qualifying tournament at RIT Saturday. But his trip to states last year and his impressive season has earned him a trip to states, where he will join teammates Nick Lazarony and Troy Ireland.
Lazarony earned his trip with a win in the finals and Ireland, who wrestles in the same 160 pound class as Darch, will also make the trip with a wild card.
Holley Quinton Murphy won the title at 119 and will have a chance for a second straight state title. He will be joined by wild card Vinnie Napierski of Attica in the weight class.
Tim Banks gets a wild card at 130 pounds and joins teammate Kyle Steadman, who won the 189 championship with a surprising win over Attica's Dave Jennings. Jennings also gets a wild card berth.
Luke Pariso won the 171 pound class last weekend and will also be trying for a state title.
Here is the complete roster of wrestlers competing in the state tournament this Friday and Saturday.
Attica's Luke Pariso wasn't supposed to beat defending New York State Public High School Athletic Association champion Cody Hutcheson of Bath. Pariso has won a couple of sectional titles, but Hutcheson was a monster.
Pariso won the 171-pound title at SuperSectionals Saturday at Rochester Institute of Technology, but that was far from the biggest upset of the day.
Holley's Kyle Steadman has a season record of just 35-10 after the weekend, but he's moving on to states after shocking the thousands of people there to watch the SuperSectionals. He beat Genesee Region League foe Dave Jennings of Attica at 189 pounds, 3-1 in overtime, to move on.
"It feels really good, coming back from sixth place and taking the title," Steadman said.
Steadman wasn't even ranked in the top five by armdrag.com and was seeded sixth in his weight class. It was the second Holley grappler to win the championship on Saturday and could be the fourth to advance to states next weekend.
"I hope Tim (Banks) goes because he has a lot of points," Holley coach John Grillo said. "He should go to states because of his past reputation and history of going to states. Quinton Murphy had an electrifying match, but Kyle Steadman was a surprise. He had a lot of losses, but has wrestled quality kids all year. We knew he had it in him and we just had to get it out of him."
"I wrestled him before and I know he's really strong on top," Steadman said. "I just had to go my hardest and give it all I had - never quit."
Steadman had a pin and a decision in Friday's opening two rounds before winning a 7-2 decision over Caledonia-Mumford's Jon Grann in the semifinals.
The other Holley wrestler to win a championship was Murphy at 119 pounds. The defending state champion at 103 pounds didn't need much time in the finals to get a return ticket to the big show.
After a technical fall and two pins earning him a trip to the championship match, he dropped Palmyra-Macedon's Tyler Marlow in 1:36.
"It felt great," Murphy said. "I'm really known for that move so when I knew it was there, I went for it."
Banks was the other Holley finalist at 130 pounds, but lost to Pal-Mac's Matt Hausbrouck 3-1 in overtime.
Murphy says that he "just wants to re-win" a state title, while it is a different story for Steadman. He will be working with 2004 state champion Andrew Grillo - John's son - over the next week to prepare for another shot at an upset.
"Coach has to get me prepared because I've never been to states before," Steadman said.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Hutcheson will get to states with a wild card, but his loss to Pariso definitely stung.
The Attica senior was ranked second but very few gave him a shot to knock off a state champion because he had never advanced past sectionals. But Pariso scored early and then got defensive to earn the title and a trip to Albany next weekend.
"I knew I had to go hard," Pariso said. "He has really good endurance so I knew I had to push the pace on him. I had that inside trip and put him on his back."
Pariso got that 2-point takedown with just 15 seconds left in the first period and then had an escape midway through the second to make it 3-0. He simply hung on in the third period to get the 3-0 decision.
"I didn't want him to get a reversal and put me on my back," Pariso said. "It could be 4-0, 4-3 or maybe a pin. I just rode him real tight and kept on at his cross-wrists and rode him for the rest of the match."
Pariso had two decisions on Friday and then topped Batavia's Anthony D'Aurizio 3-1 to advance to the finals. Now he looks forward to facing an even bigger challenge than what he's seen in Section 5 next week.
"I can't wait," Pariso said. "There is a real tough kid from Section 4, Kyle Beckwith, who has won a couple of national titles. I'm going to have to push the pace and beat him to, win a state championship."
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The Batavia wrestling team had nine grapplers compete in SuperSectionals, but end up with just one champion.
Nick Lazarony was the second ranked wrestler at 112 pounds and won three decisions to make it to the finals, where he was paired up with top-seeded Joe Smaldone of Geneva.
Both were going to get a trip to states via wild card, even if they lost. That was enough reason for Smaldone - who took second at 112 last year - to forfeit his finals match.
Lazarony had a crack at states last year and will have another one this season.
"He's looking good," Stewart said. "There are a couple of good kids we've scouted so far. He is in the top six there for sure. He still has to wrestle, but it's well deserved. He's given us four good years."
Ryan Darch was seeded No. 1 at 160 pounds and three easy decisions en route to the finals, where he was paired up with Brandon Mills of Canisteo-Greenwood, who was the No. 2 seed.
Darch took a 1-0 lead in the first period when Mills was called on a technical violation, then scored another point in the second period on an escape.
But Mills had a takedown at the mid-point of the frame and tied the match at 2. He had an escape in the third period and then kept Darch from making a move the rest of the way. He tried, making a few attempts to lunge and get ahold of Mills, but the Canisteo grappler was too slippery.
"It was a very defensive match," Stewart said. "He got caught in that little scramble there and tried to battle back from it. It is what it is."
Darch should get a wild card trip to states, but we will not know until it is announced Monday night.
Batavia's Troy Ireland lost to Mills in the semifinals, but won his wrestle-back to take third. He won a 7-6 decision over Wellsville's Ethan Lamphier.
After losing to Pariso in the semifinals, D'Aurizio lost his bid for third place against Byron-Bergen's Zack Green. Green won the third-place match with a pin at 3:53.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The highlight match of the Division II card was at 135 pounds, where two three-time defending state champions and NCAA Division I scholarship recipients squared off.
Warsaw's Ian Paddock - who will attend Ohio State next year - won a 3-0 decision over Pal-Mac's Alex Ekstrom - who will attend Oklahoma.
Two other Genesee Region League wrestlers made the finals but lost as Kendall's Jake Requa took second at 96 pounds and Lyndonville's John Brabon was second at 140.
Ryan Darch and Nick Lazarony were sectional champions last year for the Batavia wrestling team and the two were favorites heading into the Section 5 Class BBB Tournament this weekend.
They didn't disappoint and won individual championships, helping to lead the Batavia wrestling team to a third-place finish overall. Palmyra-Macedon won the team title with 272 points with Bath taking second with 190 and Batavia third with 160.
Attica was fifth with 136.5 points.
Lazarony was a Monroe County League champion for the Blue Devils and remains hot this postseason. The 112-pounder rolled to the sectional championships.
Lazarony first won a major decision of Midlakes' Max Peters 16-1, in 6:00. After that it was a 10-1 win over Ryan Howes of North Rose-Wolcott, earning him a trip to the semifinals.
He blanked Palmyra-Macedon's Dylan Rifenberg 7-0 in the semifinals. Lazarony had a tough match with Bath's Kyle Conrad in the finals but pulled through with a 4-3 decision, earning his second consecutive title.
Darch had a pair of pins at 160 pounds to get to the semifinals. He dropped Pal-Mac's Chris Argus in 2:33 in the first round and Hornell's Zach Bacon in 1:55 in the second.
He won a 7-2 decision over Brad Vecellieo of Wayland-Cohocton in the semifinals before defeating Ethan Lamphier of Wellsville, 9-2, in the championship round.
Troy Ireland almost got a shot at his teammate in the finals as he made the semifinals at 160 pounds, where he lost to Lamphier via pin in 1:30. Ireland went on to take third by beating Vecellieo 10-2 in the consolation finals.
Batavia also had three second place finishes.
Josh Mase knocked off Skyler Hendley of Way-Co in the semifinals before losing to top-seeded Bradley Mayville of Bishop Kearney 7-5 in the finals.
Anthony D'Aurizio was seeded third at 171 pounds, where Bath's Cody Hutcheson was expected to roll to the title. Hutcheson is the defending state champion.
D'Aurizio knocked off second-seeded Adam Slater of Sodus in the semifinals, 6-2, and nearly shocked everybody at the tournament in the finals. D'Aurizio took Hutcheson to the wire and wound up losing 3-2 to take second.
Dylan Goodsell finished second at 215 pounds as he made the finals with a 5-4 win over Lester Fanton of Wellsville in the semifinals. He lost a 4-3 decision to Pal-Mac's Pat Krenz in the finals.
Attica's Doug Beitz won the 285 pound championship.
Beitz beat Mike Pryce of Sodus in the opening round 4-2 and pinned Bryan Wood of Dansville in 3:51 in the quarterfinals. He then pinned Waterloo's Zach Brown in 3:27 to earn a trip to the finals.
In the finals, Beitz held on for a 1-0 decision over Pal-Mac's Mason Judd.
Vinnie Napierski made the finals at 119 pounds with an 11-0 win over William Wells of NR-W in the semifinals, but was pinned by Tyler Marlow of Pal-Mac in 3:31 in the championship.
Dave Jennings pinned Tyler Deuel of Waterloo in 2:54 at 189 pounds to make the finals, where he lost to Zack Simons of Bath 4-1.
Lance Compton took third at 125 pounds and Spencer Ford took third at 152.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Letchworth brought home the team title in Class BB with 243 points, topping Holley, which finished with 191.5 points. Le Roy took fourth (148), Byron-Bergen was sixth (102.5), Pembroke was 10th (78) and Alexander was 15th (42).
Defending state champion Quentin Murphy won for the Hawks at 119 pounds, pinning Pembroke's Adam Hill in 2:30 in the finals.
Jessi Kimmerly won the title at 112 pounds and Tim Banks is the champion at 130.
Pembroke's Graham Jensen won a 9-4 decision over Holley's Kyle Steadman to win the 189 pound title.
Jake Harvey, Tyler Fenstermaker and Ed Cigno all had runner-up finished for Le Roy with Colby Sanner and Travis Taylor having second place finishes for Pembroke. Byron-Bergen's Zach Green was second at 171 pounds.
------------------------------------------------------------------
There was no question that Warsaw was going to win Class B and the Tigers easily won the team tournament.
Lyndonville took second and Kendall was fifth.
Josh Brabon took home the 119 pound title and John Brabon won at 160 pounds for Lyndonville.
Jake ReQua won at 96 points for the Eagles.
(Thank you to Tony D'Aurizio for the photos)
There are not any major changes in this week's New York State Sports Writers Association wrestling rankings.
Batavia is our highest ranked team in the small school division and remains at No. 17, even with a win at the Ken-Ton Tournament this weekend.
Attica dropped from No. 23 to No. 24 and Holley went down from No. 32 to No. 33.
Sectionals are being held this Friday and Saturday at Bath Haverling, Warsaw, Byron-Bergen, Wayne and Fairport.
The Batavia wrestling team jumped up a spot in this week's NYSSWA polls.
An impressive showing at the Monroe County Championships, that included four wrestlers in the finals, must be the reason why. The Blue Devils (18-5) moved up from No. 18 to No. 17.
Attica dipped from No. 19 to No. 23 and has an 18-11 record. Holley (19-5) fell from No. 29 to No. 32.
Batavia suffered one of harshest losses area wrestling has seen in a while, with the two final Letchworth grapplers pinning Batavia wrestlers to get a 1-point win.
Well, that performance against the 14th ranked Indians, combined with Batavia's 66-12 win over Hornell was enough to put the Blue Devils into the state rankings in the small-school division.
And it was more than just a small jump from receiving an honorable mention as Batavia jumped all the way up to No. 18, one ahead of Attica, which has an 11-9 record.
Attica dropped from No. 14 to No. 19. Batavia is 15-5.
This is the first time that a Batavia wrestling team has ever been ranked in the state.
"The kids are ecstatic because this was one of our goals," Batavia coach Rick Stewart said. "We put together a schedule of some of the toughest teams in the state so that we could reach this goal."
Holley is also ranked, surprisingly low, at No. 29.
Batavia has two tournaments (including the Monroe County Championships, where they have not had a champ since 1980) and three dual meets left to go before sectional time.
Holley's Ken Ryan and Kendall's Cody Lansberry were both stud wrestlers in the Genesee Region League for two of the more storied programs in the area.
Ryan, a freshman at Niagara County Community College, won a 16-4 major decision over Lansberry, a freshman at Alfred State, Thursday night to help his team to a 42-3 victory.
NCCC coach Eric Knuutila earned his 356th career win, passing Iowa's Dan Gable on the all-time wins list by a college coach, at any level. He is the second all-time leader in wins at the NJCAA level. Dale Thomas of Oregon State is the all-time wins leader with 616 victories.
Ryan had a 168-50 career record for the Hawks and Lansberry went 112-48 for the Eagles.
