The Batavia Police Department is investigating an incident of leaving the scene of an accident. It occurred during the early morning hours of Monday, Sept 5.

The accident was at 59 Jackson St., at the entrance to a parking lot on Jackson Street just north of Ellicott Street. A lamppost and a stop sign were struck during the incident. The lamppost was destroyed and a stop sign was broken off at the base.

Debris left at the scene indicates the vehicle involved is a blue in color Pontiac.

Persons with information regarding this incident are asked to contact the Batavia Police Dispatch at 585-345-6350 or the Batavia Police Confidential Tip Line at 585-345-6370. Persons may also report information via the Suspicious Activity Reporting link on the Batavia Police Department’s website.

UPDATE 7:52 a.m., Wednesday: The female driver has reportedly turned herself in. The investigation is continuing.

City crews were busy on Jackson Street this morning doing some road repair work.

Valle Jewelers is celebrating its 60th year in business today with sales, prize drawings and refreshments. There was a good number of people in the store this morning when we stopped by.

Derek Geib, left, and Michael Highland, will officially open their new downtown bar and eatery Wednesday and have spent the past two evenings preparing by serving speciality hamburgers to a limited number of guests.

With the kinks mostly worked out during the "soft launch," the duo is excited to finally be doing business as Bourbon & Burger Co. at 9 Jackson St., Batavia.

There are about two dozen different types of hamburgers on the menu, and the restaurant is aiming to be known as the best place for a burger in the county.

The menu also includes a variety of sandwiches and appetizers, an extensive beer list plus a full bar.

The local Girl Scouts have a new home, 5 Jackson St., Batavia.

After the location the Girl Scouts occupied in City Centre was sold, the local office and retail shop was relocated to vacant retail space just about a block away.

It took about a month to get settled in, but the retail shop is now set up and the staff is ready to help local scouts and leaders.

The scouts will host an open house at its new location from 3 to 6 p.m., Monday, Feb. 28.

The grand opening will include free drawings, prizes and discounts on scouting items as well as a food drive for the Salvation Army and Batavia Agri-Business Child Development.

The shop is open from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with the service center opening at 8:30 a.m.

The Local Drug Enforcement Task Force raided the upper apartment at 110 Jackson St., Batavia, at around 6:15 p.m.

All we know at this point is that the raid was not the only one conducted in Genesee County today.

Investigators were still on scene about two hours later conducting a search of the apartment.

Margarita's Mexican Restaurant, 15 Jackson St., Batavia, shut down nine days ago over an alleged failure to pay state taxes, will reopen at noon, Saturday.

Owner Carlos Hernandez received the keys back to his restaurant today and was busy late this afternoon, working with his staff, getting the restaurant ready to reopen.

He said he's very happy to get the issue resolved.

Through an interpreter, Hernandez said the tax issue was an oversight.

"It was a misunderstanding with the accountants."

Tax officials claimed he owned more than $32,000 in unpaid sales and corporate taxes.

Hernandez hired an attorney to help him straighten the matter out and reached an agreement with New York so he could start serving fajitas and burritos again.

Hernandez also made a point of noting all the positive comments about Margarita's on The Batavian. He appreciates the support.

Use caution when traveling through the intersection of Jackson and Ellicott streets. A police officer reports both northbound green lights are out on Jackson.

Repair crews are being summoned.

Tonight I went to Jackson Street and a couple of the side streets to the west and snapped pictures of a few of the homes with Christmas lights.
