The No. 3 Genesee Community College men's lacrosse team played through the snow on Wednesday night to defeat visiting Alfred State College, 17-6.

The Cougars got off to a very fast start in the sloppy conditions and found the back of the Pioneers net six times in the opening period. Christian Reiller scored three of the first four goals for Genesee and Jonathan Gill added two of his three goals of the game in the first quarter.

Genesee made it 7-0 early in the second before Alfred State broke through at the 2:53 mark. Chris Rabung, Reiller and Saxon Weil closed out the scoring in the first half to give GCC a 10-1 lead at the break.

The Pioneers answered an early third period goal from Gill with a goal at the 2:28 mark before Ben Madafferi scored his first career goal to give GCC a 12-2 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Alfred State fought back with four straight goals in the final period including a two-man up goal and a shorthanded goal to make it 12-6. The Cougars went on to score the final five goals of the game and stay unbeaten on the year.

Reiller finished with five goals and two assists, Gill added three goals and two assists, Weil posted a hat-trick with three goals, Tom Owen tallied two goals and an assist and Rabung finished with two goals.

Pete DiLaura led the defense with six takeaways, eight ground balls and two assits. Jordan McElligott had five takeaways and four ground balls, Bobby Wheeler added four takeaways and four ground balls, Johnny Astrologo had three takeaways and four ground balls and Adam Jacobs recorded three takeaways and five ground balls.

Genesee improves to 7-0 on the season and will host the No. 1 team in the country on Saturday when Onondaga Community College comes to GCC for a 1 p.m. start.

The #3 Genesee Community College men's lacrosse team improved to 6-0 this year after beating #4 Suffolk Community College 13-4 on Sunday afternoon.

Christian Reiller put Genesee in front early with a first quarter goal but Suffolk responded and tied the game halfway through the opening period. Reiller scored again with 15-seconds remining in the first frame to give the Cougars the lead for good.

Chris Rabung scored a man up goal early in the second quarter to spark the Cougars offense. GCC scored five more times in the second, including two goals from Nick Gray and a goal from Steve Raimondi, to take a 7-1 lead into halftime.

The Genesee penalty kill was tested in the second half and Suffolk scored the first goal of the third quarter on a man up advantage to draw within five at 7-2. GCC responded with a man up goal of their own and a late goal by Marcus Palvino gave the Cougars a 9-3 lead going into the fourth.

GCC scored four times in the final frame and the win extends their unbeaten streak to six games.

Reiller finished the afternoon with four goals and two assists. Gray tallied three goals, Rabung and Raimondi each added two goals, Jonathan Gill recorded a goal and an assist, Luke Grahnert had two assists and Charlie Evans chipped in one goal.

Brady Lawrence had another strong performance in net making 18 saves. Jordan McElligott led the defense with five takeaways and five ground balls. Bobby Wheeler had four takeaways and Pete DiLaura had five takeaways and three ground balls.

Mike Breindel was 8 of 12 on faceoffs.

The Cougars will host Alfred State in their next contest on Wednesday night at 7pm.

After moving to No. 3 in this week's NJCAA National Poll, the Genesee Community College men's lacrosse team continued their hot start to the season by defeating #6 SUNY Delhi on Wednesday night, 14-3. A home game for GCC, the contest was played at SUNY Cortland.

Tyler Skowronski got Genesee on the board early with the first goal of the game and the only goal of the first quarter.

The Cougars opened it up in the second quarter with goals from Pete DiLaura, Nick Gray, Saxon Weil and Christian Reiller to take an 8-3 lead into the half.

In the second half, the GCC defense shut Delhi down and kept the Broncos off the board for the final two periods. Brady Lawrence made 11 saves in net and Johnny Astrologo had nine takeaways and four ground balls. Jordan McElligott, Bobby Wheeler, Adam Jacobs, Tom Owen, Tyler Meehan and DiLaura combined for 18 takeaways and 22 ground balls.

Reiller led the offense with four goals and four assists. Weil added three goals, Marcus Palvino recorded a goal and two assists, Skowronski finished with two goals and Charlie Evans and Cameron Seneca chipped in a goal each.

Genesee improves to 5-0 on the season and will host Suffolk Community College on Sunday at noon.

The #4 Genesee Community College men's lacrosse team traveled to #3 Nassau Community College on Long Island on Saturday afternoon, and defeated last year's national runner up, 9-6.

Blake Hurt got Genesee on the board just one minute into the game and the Cougars never looked back. Genesee held a 5-0 lead that included goals from Christian Reiller and Marcus Palvino before Nassau got on the board. GCC had a 5-2 lead at the half.

Chris Rabung scored a man up goal five minutes into the second half to extend the Cougars lead and Saxon Weil followed with two goals of his own. Jonathan Gill helped put the game away with a goal with one minute remaining.

Brady Lawrence made 24 saves in net for Genesee and the Cougars defense killed eight of nine penalties.

Pete DiLaura led the team with seven takeaways and added four ground balls. Bobby Wheeler, Jordan McElligott and Johnny Astrologo combined for 14 takeaways and 14 ground balls.

Weil led the team in scoring with two goals and two assists, Reiller added two assists to his goal and Palvino, Hurt, Rabung and Tyler Skrownski all had a goal and an assist.

The Cougars improve to 4-0 on the season and will play SUNY Delhi at Cortland State on Wednesday night at 8pm.

Coming off of their second-straight trip to the NJCAA National Final Four in 2012, the #5 Genesee Community College men's lacrosse team opened up their 2013 season with a 23-2 victory over visiting Herkimer County Community College on Wednesday night.

Christian Reiller recorded an early hat trick, scoring the first three goals of the game for GCC to put the Cougars in front 3-0 just three-minutes in. Charlie Evans and Marcus Palvino rounded out the scoring in the first quarter to extend the Genesee to 5-0 after one.

GCC pushed their lead to 9-0 before Herkimer finally broke through at the 7:33 mark of the second quarter. Reiller added his fourth goal of the game before the Generals notched their second goal just before halftime. Genesee led 10-2 at the break.

In the second half, it was all GCC as the Cougars outscored Herkimer 13-0. Jon Gill scored twice in the final two quarters to record a hat trick in the game. Nick Gray and Stephen Turkasz each added two second half goals.

Jordon McElligott led the defense with seven takeaways and seven ground balls on the night. Johnny Astrologo, Bobby Wheeler and Peter DiLaura combined for four more takeaways and 10 ground balls on defense.

Tom Owen had a solid night at defensive-midfield with four takeaways, four ground balls and an assist.

In net, Brady Lawrence played three quarters for the Cougars and allowed just two goals while making three saves. Craig Seneca and Mark Pucek split the final quarter and did not allow a goal while combining for five saves.

Reiller ended the night with 12 total points, tallying four goals and eight assists. Saxon Weil chipped in two goals and an assist.

In total, 16 Cougars recorded a point on Wednesday night.

Mike Breindel was 12 of 17 on face offs and Charlie Evans was 4 of 7 in the game.

Genesee improves to 1-0 on the year and will host Monroe Community College on Saturday (time TBA).

The Genesee Community College Men's Lacrosse program held a lacrosse clinic for a group of approximately 35 children from the Tonawanda Reservation this past Saturday, Sept. 29. The clinic was in conjunction with the GCC Native American Student Group and served as a community service event for the two-time NJCAA National Tournament appearing Cougars.

"We wanted to get our program involved with the community in the area, specifically the Native Americans from around the area," said GCC Head Coach Dave Hoover. "Since our team has always felt that Native Americans can help build our program, we wanted to give back to them."

Genesee currently has five Native Americans on their roster for 2012-13.

The clinic ran from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. and included basic lacrosse instruction from 12 players currently on the GCC Men's Lacrosse team. After instruction, lunch was provided for the athletes.

Two members of the Genesee Community College Men's Lacrosse Team have been honored as 2012 All-Americans selections.

Sophomore attackman Connor Latimer (Whitby, Ontario, Canada) was named an NJCAA First Team All-American and sophomore midfielder Spencer Halliwell-Allen (St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada) was named to the second team.

Latimer, a Second Team All-American selection last season and a preseason All-American coming into this season, was also named to the All-Region first team and All-Conference first team this year. He recorded 118 points in 19 games this season, including a school record 66 goals. He finishes his GCC career holding the records for most goals in a single game with nine, most points in a single game with 14 and most career points with 217.

"Connor is a true scorer. Getting a player with his talent really helped put our program on the map," said GCC Assistant Coach Derek Hoover. "He is a hard worker and is always looking to get better. He was a great leader for us this year as a captain and was always looking to get the best from his teammates."

Halliwell-Allen led the nation in assists by a midfielder with 47, the seventh highest total by any position player in all of the NJCAA. He scored 72 total points which was tied for the 13th most in the country.

"For me, Spencer was one of the best midfielders in the country this year. In two years, he became the total package. He is mature, a leader, has high character and developed his game with hard work every day," Hoover said.

Halliwell-Allen was also named to the All-Conference first team and the All-Region first team this year.

The Cougars finished the season with a 15-4 record. They were Western New York Athletic Conference Champions, reached the Region III Tournament Final Four and advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament for the second consecutive season.

The Genesee Community College men's lacrosse team traveled to Niagara County Community College on Wednesday night and routed the Thunderwolves, 26-5.

It was another dominating performance, as eleven different players recorded a point. The Cougars held a 7-0 lead after the first quarter and led 12-2 at the half.

Connor Latimer (Whitby, ON) led all scorers with eight goals and five assists. Gaehnew Printup (Tuscarora, NY) added four goals and three assits. With his three assits, Printup broke the single season assist record. The previous record was 37, Printup now has 40 on the season.

Spencer Halliwell-Allen (St. Catherines, ON) led the midfield with two goals and two assists, Chip Chapman (Batavia, NY) added two goals and an assist and Neil Kabesh (Nepean, ON) and Keaton Taylor-Lazore (Salamanca, NY) each had two goals.

Aaron Hayward (Hilton, NY) led the defense with five ground balls and two takeaways. Dylan Hickey (Hilton, NY) chipped in with three assists.

In net, Pat McMahon (Amherst, NY) and Brady Lawrence (St. Catherines, ON) split time and combined for 11 saves.

Genesee (11-2) will play next at Tompkins Cortland Community College on Saturday at 1pm.

The Genesee Community College women’s lacrosse team could not keep up with Erie Community College on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Kats 26-5.

Genesee was in a hole early, giving up the first three goals of the game. Anna Modera (Geneva, NY) put GCC on the board about five minutes into the first half and cut the Erie lead to 3-1. Modera scored three more first-half goals, but Erie held an 18-4 lead at the break.

In the second half, Erie extended their lead to 20-4 before Modera scored her fifth goal of the game. The Lady Cougars would not find the back of the net the rest of the second half, and Erie cruised to the 26-5 win.

With her five goals on Wednesday, Modera now has 30 goals on the season.

With the loss, Genesee falls to 0-8 on the season and will travel to Onondaga Community College on Saturday for a 1pm start.

The Genesee Community College men’s lacrosse team upped their win streak to nine straight games on Wednesday night with a 26-3 victory over visiting Cayuga Community College.

The Cougars lit up the scoreboard with 19 first half goals and allowed just one. They followed with seven goals in the second half and allowed only two.

Gaehnew Printup (Tuscarora, NY) led all scorers with 12 points. He scored four goals and broke his own record for assists in a game (previously seven) with eight assists. Connor Latimer (Whitby, ON) scored four goals and also added four assists, Jon Gill (Cattaraugus, Territory) scored three times and assisted once, Marcus Palvino (Spencerport, NY) had a five point night with three goals and two assists and Steven Raimondi (Amherst, NY) and Spencer Halliwell-Allen (St. Catherines, ON) each added two goals and an assist.

Mike Breindel (Hamburg, NY) was 18 of 20 on faceoffs and also led the team with eight ground balls.

#4 Genesee (9-1) will travel to Maryland on Saturday to take on #3 Community College of Baltimore County-Essex at 1pm.

The Genesee Community College women’s lacrosse team fell to Broome Community College at home on Wednesday afternoon, 20-3.

Genesee faltered out of the gate, allowing Broome CC the first three goals of the game. Anna Modera (Geneva, NY) got the Lady Cougars back to within two with an unassisted goal about five minutes into the first half, making the score 3-1. The Lady Hornets quickly responded with a goal to go back up by two, but Modera scored again to cut the lead in half. Broome would then score the next ten goals before Modera netted her third goal of the game, but by that time it was too late. Broome scored six unanswered goals and shut out Genesee in the second half and cruised to the victory.

With her three goals in the game, Modera now has 20 on the season.

Genesee (0-6) will host Mohawk Valley Community College on Saturday at 1pm for their next contest.

The Genesee Community College men's lacrosse team traveled to Monroe Community College on Wednesday afternoon and came away with their fourth victory of the season, defeating the Tribunes 9-7.

The Cougars trailed 4-2 early in the second quarter before coming back and tying the game on a Jon Gill (Cattaraugus Territory) goal with about 30 seconds remaining in the half.

MCC scored two quick second half goals to reclaim the lead, but the Cougars' defense and goalie Pat McMahon (Amherst, NY) shut the door after that. Genesee's offensive comeback began after a Joe Pedro (Batavia, NY) goal that sparked five unanswered tallies, including goals from Connor Latimer (Whitby, ON) and Gaehnew Printup (Tuscarora, NY) and gave GCC a 9-6 lead.

Monroe scored once in the fourth quarter but could not find the back of the net after that.

McMahon made 18 saves in net and defender Dave Lehman (Edmonton, AB) had five take-aways. Rashad Brown (Lockport, NY) and Mike Breindel (Hamburg, NY) combined to go 10 of 18 on faceoffs.

Latimer finished with three goals and two assists, Gill tallied three goals and also had an assist and Printup and Pedro both finished with a goal a piece.

Genesee improves to 4-1 on the season and will host Hudson Valley Community College on Saturday afternoon at 1pm.



The Genesee Community College women's lacrosse team fell to Jefferson Community College on Wednesday afternoon, 19-2.

Jefferson recorded the first 16 goals of the contest before Anna Modera (Geneva, NY) scored her sixth goal of the season about eight minutes into the second half. Modera scored the Lady Cougars' second and final goal as well with just over 1:30 left in the game.

Genesee falls to 0-2 on the season and will host Niagara County Community College on Sunday afternoon at 1pm.

 While at Genesee Community College today, I was watching the lacrosse team practice for a little bit.

There are a bunch of good athletes - especially local athletes - playing sports at GCC right now. Here at The Batavian, we would like to give these squads some coverage.

I am working on getting high school coaches involved with posting information on their teams and I would like to do the same for GCC.

I've left a few messages with different people at the college and have not gotten a response yet, so hopefully the new SID will get back to me soon.

In the meantime, any coaches or athletes that are interested in getting coverage on The Batavian are encouraged to contact myself of Philip so that we can give the college and the local athletes the coverage they deserve.
