A Welcome Sight -- new River Street Bridge open for traffic

Motorists and walkers were treated to a welcome sight this morning with the reopening of the new River Street bridge that crosses over the Tonawanda Creek between West Main Street and South Main Street.

"It's kind of nice to hear cars going by again and I'm especially happy for the walkers -- those are the ones I'm most happy for," said Nann Zorn, who lives on River Street, a stone's throw from the span's southwest side. "It has had to have been tough for those who walk to Tops and other stores (in the area), back and forth."

Ramsey Constructors Inc. of Lakeville rebuilt the "post-tension" bridge (a specific type of construction, focusing on reinforcement). The project started in early June, taking four and a half months to complete.

"I have no complaints whatsoever (about the workers)," Zorn said. "They have been great. And people that say it took a long time, well, if it was the State of New York doing it, it would have been three years."

The project cost about $2 million, with $1.65 million of it covered by federal aid. New York State funds covered about $300,000, with Genesee County paying a bit more than $100,000.

Zorn, who lives in the house her mother grew up in, noted that the bridge was last replaced in 1975.

"We even have home movies of the bridge that was up before that," she said. "That one went up in the 1930s or '40s, and when they replaced it, they just dropped it in the creek."

River Street bridge crews use mega-crane to place heavy beams

The River Street bridge replacement project is progressing toward an expected end-of-October completion.

This afternoon, crews from Ramsey Constructors Inc., of Lakeville, used a 350-ton, $3.2 million crane to set the last two beams of the bridge.

“The crane has s super-lift on it that straightens the boom out so we can use just one crane to pick the beams, which weigh between 31 ½ tons and 28 tons,” Darin Florian said. “Today, we’re setting from the beginning abutment out to the pier and on Monday we will do the same procedure from the end abutment back to the pier.”

The beams were made by the L.C. Whitford Co. in Wellsville.

Florian said since this is a “post-tension” bridge, crews will have to grout all the joints between the beams and then will “tension" the cables that make up the post-tension part of the bridge.

“Then we will begin to form the deck and pour the deck -- hopefully before the end of the month,” he added.

Per the BBR network website, post-tensioning -- at its most basic level -- is a clever way of reinforcing concrete while you are building, and allows thinner concrete sections, longer spans between supports, stiffer walls to resist lateral loads and stiffer foundations to resist the effects of shrinking and swelling soils. 

Benefits of post-tensioning include design flexibility, faster construction, lower construction costs, reduced maintenance costs, enhanced durability and reduced environmental impact.

Two giant cranes lifted away the deck of the River Street Bridge tonight as part of a reconstruction project for the bridge spanning the Tonawanda Creek. 

Unfortunately, during the time the cranes were doing the work, I couldn't stop because I had else I needed to be and by the time I got back, the work was done.  If anybody took any good pictures, please send them to howard@thebatavian.com and I'll add them to this post.

Pedestrians concerned about closure of River Street Bridge for rehab

The River Street Bridge over the Tonawanda Creek, which is owned and maintained by Genesee County, received more than $2 million in federal aid to help develop a plan to rehabillitate the structure.

The total estimated cost to rehab the bridge is $2,155,000, divided between three seperate funds:

  • 80 percent funded by Federal Highway Administration
  • Estimated 15 percent funded by New York State Department of Transportation
  • Estimated 5 percent funded by local share (taxpayers)

At an information meeting at City Hall Wednesday night, County Highway Superintendent Timothy Hens said the project would take between four to six months and will begin next June. Construction will take place in eight-hour shifts beginning at 8 a.m.

The bridge was built in 1975. Senior project engineer Jonathan M. Walczak said one of its fault is that the joints were placed at the bottom of the beams and the saltwater and severe weather of Western New York winters took its toll on the bridge joints. He proposes raising the joints so that it's harder for salt and river water to reach them.

A River Street resident asked about raising the actual roadway of River Street and Walczak replied "It's so flat out here, the geometrics just won't let us raise the bridge." 

The engineer's team is already in contact with National Fuel talking about the eight-inch natural gas main; the gas main will be maintained.

River Street residents debated about how handicapped individuals who live at the Birchwood Village Apartments would get to work without bridge access, since several of them work at Tops Market in Batavia.

"I will try to be in touch with local employers to see if we can get an alternate way of transportation," Walczak replied.

Residents suggested installing a temporary sidewalk and Walczak seems open to such ideas.

He was also asked about the dimensions of the sidewalk, five-feet wide, and bridge railing, 45-inches high, and said both will be kept the same.

River Street resident Nann Zorn wasn't at the meeting but wrote to Highway Superintendent Hens espressing concern about the bridge's months-long closure.

"There are hundreds of pedestrains who use this bridge every day as a main route to their employment and to obtain provisions and necessities for their daily lives," Zorn wrote.

That sparked spirited debate on whether it was possible to keep a temporary path open over creek during bridge reconstruction. The proposed detour would be approximately 1.7 miles long and consist of using West Main Street, Oak Street and Pearl Street instead.

The River Street Bridge is closed today as part of an ongoing repair process. The bridge surface was already milled and today workers will do more work to prepare the bridge for resurfacing. Resurfacing will be completed next week, which will wrap up the repair work.

Repairs on River Street Bridge set to begin Tuesday

Message from County Highway Superintendent Tim Hens:

The County Highway Department will begin a series of repairs to the River Street Bridge next week. The repairs include joint replacements and a full deck mill and fill. The repairs will have a major impact on travel across the bridge as traffic will be reduced to one lane. Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes. The repairs are scheduled to start on Tuesday and last for at least two weeks with another closure later this summer to complete the repairs.
