Cold, snow and wind will make for a tricky afternoon commute

By Philip Anselmo

We're looking at a severe winter weather advisory for the region from 9 o'clock this morning through 6:00pm this afternoon, issued by the National Weather Service out of Buffalo. Don't expect things to get more friendly after that. We're already hearing talk of record low temperatures possibly down to minus ten degrees by Thursday. For now, here's what to expect:

A strong cold front will cross western New York early this afternoon and bring 1 to 3 inches of snow to the area. Strong southerly winds ahead of the front will shift to west with the frontal passage and gust up to 35 mph. This will result in considerable blowing and drfiting snow. Expect very hazardous conditions for travel for a few hours during the afternoon.

Please be careful driving out there. Wind, plus snow, plus cold usually make for the worst driving conditions. I can speak from experience that Route 33 between Batavia and Bergen is often treacherous when the gusts start kicking the snow across the road.

Everything looks clear right now on the Thruway.

Nasty weather on the way

By Brian Hillabush

Yet another good reason to stay in and watch the NFL playoffs - the weather is going to get pretty bad.

Things should get pretty nasty later this evening and through the night, according to weather.com

The snow is expected to start at around 3:45 p.m. and will get serious by 7 p.m. and will continue all through the night.

Here is a copy of the Winter Weather Advisory issued by the National Weather Service this morning.

Walking in a winter wonderland...

By Arlana Pathammavong

I have found in the past few weeks during our snowfall chaos, many things frustrating.  During our snowstorm we had not too long ago, we cannot really deny that the plows at that time did the best that they could do, and they did just that.  And at a time like that you might not expect that our sidewalks in the city get taken care of the day of the storm, or even the day after, as there was just too much snow to handle all at one time.  But just last night (New Year's Eve) I was out at 11:00 PM and there were people walking down Oak Street and Mix Place and Main Street in sections, because the sidewalks were not cleared.  There wasn't even anything close to as much snow as we had 2 weeks back.  I understand that sometimes those little Kubota type tractors aren't able to get out there right away, but you'd think by midnight they'd have sidewalks cleared.  Yes, the priorities to clear are the streets, but it is also not safe for people to be walking in the roads especially when the streets are slippery and icy.  Imagine if a car were switching lanes and lost control.  I myself spun my tires a few times and swerved to the side while trying to get through a green light.  I just think that for the pedestrians who travel throughout the city, they should be able to walk down the sidewalks where they are safer.  Simple.

OK, maybe it's not snowman weather... Snowman contest extended through Saturday

By Philip Anselmo

This here is a picture of Dame Edna, the only snow... er, person... to be built out at the Holland Land Office Museum today.

Unfortunately, while the snow fell, and it looked like it might be a good day to build snow... people... the roads were nasty and the winds a bit cutting. That being said, the snowman contest has been extended through Saturday.

So pack up the kids, mittens, carrots and coal and head down to the Holland Land Office Museum to build up your snowman for a chance to win a cool prize. Here's Pat Weissend:

News roundup: Yuck weather!

By Philip Anselmo

It was a wretched commute into Batavia from Rochester this morning. Roads were packed and ragged with snow. It's slow going out there, so be careful.

Fortunately, the winter storm warning is set to expire by noon today, according to WBTA's Dan Fischer. Until then, however, expect another few inches of snow to fall, and watch out for whiteout conditions as the winds should be kicking up around 30 mph.

More snow on the way overnight

By Philip Anselmo

More snow will be falling across the region overnight tonight and into tomorrow afternoon. Fortunately, it won't be anything we can't handle. Here's the winter weather advisory being issued by the National Weather Service and in effect from 10:00pm tonight through noon tomorrow:

Snow amounts of 2 to 5 inches are expected overnight with the lowest amounts near Lake Ontario and the highest amounts generally south of Route 20.

On Wednesday another couple of inches are expected through midday before the snow tapers off.

A winter weather advisory is normally issued for a variety of winter weather conditions such as light snow, blowing snow, sleet, freezing rain and wind chilld. While the weather will be significant, the word advisory implies that severe winter weather is not anticipated.

In other words, get out your shovels, but there's no need to fire up the generator.

Here's how things look on the radar right now. There are a few patchy areas of snow south and east of us. But what will really bring the accumulation is that blotch of blue off to the west, creeping over Detroit.

Video: Snowtubing in Batavia

By Philip Anselmo

This video was posted to YouTube on December 23, obviously before the rains. It was shot at PolarWave Snowtubing on Harloff Road in Batavia. I must admit, I had not yet heard of this place. It sounds like great fun. Have you been? Tell us about your time there.

Note: PolarWave is temporarily closed due to the warm temperatures and rains. You can check back at their Web site to find out when they open again, or to make reservations for a later date.

Flooding & high winds whip through Batavia

By Steve Ognibene

It started actually Saturday as temperatures were rising in the upper 30's climbing to low 50's overnight.  We had received about 2+ feet of snow just in the last week and now it was melting very rapidly.  Today's high was in the upper 50's and the tonawanda creek was above flood stage of 9 feet and peaked around 11.4 feet according to the weather channel this morning.  It's now at a little over 12 feet and hopefully cresting soon.  Also during this time we had very high winds which were approx 35-45mph most of the day.  This morning there were gusts passing through around 50+ mph for about an hour.  As the day went on the city crews were on scene along with tree and power companies to help battle the flooding and tree damage due to high winds.  On every street I saw tree limbs, debris and even uprooting in some areas that had left much damage through the city.

Here are some pictures to share of areas around the city:

A tree fell hitting a house on east avenue and pulled utility wires.

Tree was uprooted on Lincoln Ave. damaging houses and a red SUV due to the 50+ mph winds.

Many side streets had flooding on the south side.  Ganson Ave, Elmwood and pictured here is Jackson Avenue.

Kibbie park or should I say Kibbie lake?  The winds were very high in the afternoon during this time.

The tonawanda creek filled up rapidly due to the fast melting of snow.  Here is a picture showing the River Street bridge with a vehicle coming across.

Look familiar?  Corner of Walnut and Law streets had major flooding.  A trucker was able to pass through heading south on Rt 98.

Let's hope the worst is over and we can recover a bit before heading into the New Year.

Rumors that an elderly woman was found in a snow bank in Oakfield unfounded

By Philip Anselmo

Earlier today, we received a news tip that an elderly woman in Oakfield had been "found in the snow" and subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment. Apparently a news station in Buffalo reported the incident without releasing the name of the woman nor relating what exactly had happened... Odd.

Well, we contacted the Genesee County sheriff's deputies to find out what really happened. Chief Deputy Gordon Dibble got back to us. He had this to say:

"I found nothing regarding an elderly woman found in a snow bank in our county yesterday.  What I did find was a rumor floating around about an elderly woman who was found in a snow bank in some other county and supposedly she was a Genesee Co. resident.  I am unable to backtrack that rumor but your caller may have heard a news report regarding this and picked up on the Genesee Co. part thinking it occurred in our county."

There you go. Just another rumor that made the nightly news.

Storm photo: Stuck in a ditch

By Philip Anselmo

We received this photo via a news submission this morning. No name was given, but the following caption was included: "Parts delivery @ Empire Tractor," and the photo was taken during Friday's big storm. Does anyone know the story behind this? How did this truck get in this situation?

My snow story and pictures from around Batavia

By Steve Ognibene

I was snowblowing my driveway this morning and my wife took a picture of me.  I was very chilled by the cold air and wind that was whipping through the area.

Then when I finished.  I went around town taking some pictures of different places:

Main Street

I drove down Bank St. here shown above, the street was really narrowed by the snow.

Pictured here is a guy snowblowing his driveway on North Street.

Along side a neighbors house was a tree that was weighed down by the heavy snow.  Total I believe we got approx 2 feet but difficult to tell with the blowing and drifting.  More to come.

Braving the elements...

By Philip Anselmo

Well, folks. I'm ready and willing. We shall soon find out if I'm able. We've gathered the morning news for you. Now, there's nothing left to do but brave the commute. I'm leaving from Rochester and heading to Batavia in search of life on the streets, off the streets and in the shops. Check back later for full photo coverage of the journey. In the meantime, if you've got photos, video, stories to tell or whatever related to the storms of the past few days, please send them our way. We would love to share.

Thruway opened, but conditions still bad

By Philip Anselmo

The Thruway between Rochester and the Pennsylvania border has been re-opened. Nevertheless, conditions are nasty. Expect snow, ice and blowing snow. If you do have to drive this stretch, please do so with caution.

"Snow pushers" roll through downtown

By Philip Anselmo

Thanks to Brian Odachowski for getting us this photo over the weekend. This was taken on Main Street in Batavia during Friday's storm, which already seems like a pleasant memory compared with the frigid winds and whiteouts of this morning. You can't quite make it out in this scaled-down version, but this truck here is hauling snow pushers. Is that irony?

Lake effect snow closes Thurway between Rochester and Buffalo

By Howard B. Owens

If your job requires a commute to either Rochester or Buffalo, you might want to call your boss now and tell him or her you won't make it into work today.  That big project you're working on? It will just have to wait.

The Thruway is closed in both directions from from Rochester to Erie, Pa., according to the Thruway Authority web site.  Those are exits 46 to 61.

We have no information on alternative routes at this time, but if the Thruway is closed ...

UPDATE: 6:24 a.m.: WBTA has more on closings and cancellations.

UPDATE: 6:49 a.m.: Here's the latest weather statement from the National Weather Service:

... SLOW TRAVEL ACROSS THE NIAGARA FRONTIER THIS MORNING...

WHILE THE HEAVY LAKE SNOWS HAVE PUSHED SOUTH... THERE WILL STILL BE AREAS OF REDUCED VISIBILITIES FROM BLOWING SNOW EARLY THIS MORNING. THIS WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY SOME OCCASIONAL LIGHT SNOW SHOWERS... ESPECIALLY ACROSS ORLEANS AND GENESEE COUNTIES WHERE MORE WIDESPREAD LAKE ONTARIO GENERATED SNOWS WILL BE FOUND.

TEMPERATURES EARLY THIS MORNING WILL BE CLOSE TO 10 DEGREES...

WITH GUSTY WEST WINDS OF 15 TO 30 MPH PRODUCING WIND CHILL VALUES CLOSE TO 10 BELOW ZERO. MOTORISTS SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR SNOW COVERED ROADS AND A LONGER COMMUTE TIME.

ANYONE HEADING OUTDOORS SHOULD ALSO BE DRESSED FOR THE SUB ZERO WIND CHILLS BY COVERING AS MUCH EXPOSED SKIN AS POSSIBLE. DRESSING IN LAYERS IS ALSO SUGGESTED.

Snow is not fun

By Brian Hillabush

OK.

My friend plowed my driveway and I could get my car out. I decided to use it to pick up a friend as a bunch of us got together to watch football.

I got caught in three snowbanks.

Do not drive if you don't have to. It is not getting any better and it is really bad out there.

Being safe is the most important thing.

Back to the Panthers//Giants game.

UPDATE: The game ended and I had to drive home. The snowplow filled the end of my friend's driveway with snow, and I got stuck for a fourth time. It took about an hour and a half or more to get out and I'm just walking in my door at 3:15 a.m.

I was going to move to Arizona two years ago. What was I thinking?

Another snowy day

By Brian Hillabush

My car is totally stuck in the driveway today and I'm not going to shovel it out. Luckily my friend has a snowblower and could get out of his driveway, so I'm at his house watching games. I enjoyed driving around on Friday taking photos and talking to people, but unfortunately it would take too long to clear out my driveway, and I need to watch football.

I'm not going to be risking my life driving around today, like I did on Friday. I think it might actually be worse out there today than the other day.

But here are a few pics from my neighborhood before I left.

Lake effect storm warning Sunday afternoon until Monday morning

By Howard B. Owens

Lake Effect Snow is coming.

The predicted storm is significant enough for the National Weather Service to issue the ominous warning that travel between 1 p.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. Monday may be impossible.

Meanwhile, the late Saturday, Sunday morning weather "watch" has been downgraded to an advisory.  That's small comfort compared to the dire language of the NWS warning:

SNOW WILL DEVELOP FROM WEST TO EAST ACROSS THE REGION LATE TONIGHT... WITH THE STEADIEST SNOWFALL EXPECTED SUNDAY MORNING INTO THE EARLY AFTERNOON. THE SNOW SUNDAY AFTERNOON WILL BECOME LAKE ENHANCED AND BE ACCOMPANIED BY STRONG SOUTHWEST WINDS... WHICH COULD GUST WELL OVER 40 MPH. THIS WILL PRODUCE SIGNIFICANT BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW WITH FREQUENT WHITEOUTS. THERE COULD EVEN BE SOME MINOR WIND DAMAGE.

and

A DOUBLE BARRELED LOW STRETCHING FROM THE UPPER GREAT LAKES TO THE OHIO VALLEY SATURDAY EVENING WILL GRADUALLY WORK ACROSS OUR REGION BEGINNING AFTER 3 OR 4 AM IN THE WEST AND ABOUT DAYBREAK FOR THE EASTERN LAKE ONTARIO COUNTIES. THIS WILL RESULT IN ANOTHER ROUND OF ACCUMULATING SNOW FOR THE ENTIRE REGION WITH THE HEAVIEST AMOUNTS ACROSS THE EASTERN LAKE ONTARIO COUNTIES.

BY FAR THOUGH... THE BIGGEST IMPACT FROM THIS SYSTEM WILL BE STRONG WINDS ON THE BACK SIDE OF THIS LOW. ANY SNOW THAT DOES FALL WILL BE BLOWN AROUND WITH SIGNIFICANT DRIFTING... CAUSING FREQUENT WHITEOUTS. THE WORST AREAS WILL BE EAST OF THE LAKES WHERE LOCALIZED BLIZZARD CONDITIONS CAN BE EXPECTED.

My hope: Things clear up enough by Monday afternoon for my wife's flight from California to safely arrive at ROC.

Be safe, stay warm and pray for the safety of those people who have no choice but to brave the elements on our behalf.

Not everybody hates the weather today

By Brian Hillabush

Five-year old Andrew and two-year old Kate Ricupito didn't mind the storm Western New York was hit with today.

Here are the two youngsters enjoying some good old fashioned sledding at Centennial Park in Batavia.
