Truck driver allegedly watching porn at time of fatal accident on Thurway

By Howard B. Owens

The driver of a truck involved in a fatal accident on the Thruway the morning of Dec. 12 was allegedly operating on little sleep and viewing porn on a laptop computer at the time of the accident.

Thomas Wallace, 45, of Brook Park, Ohio, has been charged with manslaughter 2nd and jailed on $50,000 bail or $200,000 bond.

Julie Stratton, 33, of Synder, was driving in the passing lane of the Thruway in Pembroke when her car struck a deer and became disabled. She managed to call 9-1-1 before a tractor trailer plowed into her car. Several cars and trucks reportedly managed to avoid hitting her vehicle, which immediately raised questions about how Wallace was apparently unable to avoid striking the car.

Wallace is accused by the State Police of keeping a falsified log book and working a 27-hour shift at the time of the accident. He allegedly had slept only four hours in the previous 24.

State Police also say he had a computer in his lap that was streaming pornography at the time of the accident.

Wallace was reportedly driving for Millis Transfer out of Blackriver Falls, Wis.

Stratton was the mother of two young children.

Thruway Authority floating idea of wind turbines along I-90

By Howard B. Owens

Apparently, the New York State Thruway Authority thinks it can get a little greener by constructing wind turbines at various locations along I-90.

While a memo from the authority to Genesee County officials stresses the preliminary nature of its planning, there is a dot on the map at the Batavia exit.

The state agency is seeking public feedback on the proposal, and county officials seem pretty cool to the idea.

County Planner Jim Duval shared with the Planning Board last night that County Manager Jay Gsell and Highway Superintendent Tim Hens are concerned that the Batavia location is a mere 4,500 feet from the county airport.

The ideal distance would be more than 10,000 feet.

Not to mention the exit is a relatively commercial, high-traffic area.

The Planning Board voted unanimously to send a resolution to the authority opposing placement of a wind turbine at the Batavia exit.

Thruway tolls going up 5 percent on Sunday

By Howard B. Owens

On Sunday, drivers who choose to travel on the Thruway will pay 5 percent more, and those who use EZPass will be getting less of a discount.

The toll charge change is part of a Thruway Authority effort to raise money to pay for $2.1 billion in improvements to the Thruway's roads and bridges, according to the D&C.

Assembly Transportation Committee Chairman David Gantt, D-Rochester, said the toll increases have pushed more motorists off the Thruway and to local roads, limiting the amount of revenue raised by the toll increases.

"There's no reason for them to be raising tolls on the Thruway," Gantt said. "It runs people off, they still don't meet their goals, so what benefit is it to them?"

Trooper involved in accident on Thruway released from hospital that night

By Howard B. Owens

The State Trooper injured in an auto accident on the Thurway in Pembroke on Saturday has been identified as Nina Johnson.

Johnson, who was taken via Mercy Flight to ECMC, was released from the hospital Saturday evening.

The Trooper was involved in traffic control following a fatal accident on the Thurway just hours prior.

Her patrol vehicle was reportedly struck by an SUV driven by Catherine A. Manahan, 27, of Williamsville.

That accident took the life of Julie I. Stratton, 33, of Synder, whose car became disabled in the fast lane after striking a deer. A tractor-trailer then ran into her car. She was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the Buffalo News, state police have yet to decide whether to file charges against the truck driver, Thomas M. Wallace, 45, of Brook Park, Ohio.

“We’re still investigating it to see if there was some distracted driving involved,” Harris said. “We’re looking at why [Wallace] didn’t perceive the vehicle in front of him.”

State police noted that other drivers were able to avoid hitting Stratton’s disabled car in the minutes before the crash.

Stratton was married and had two sons, ages 1 and 3.
