Curfew for all trick-or-treat activities is 9 p.m.

City Police Chief Shawn Heubusch advises that a 9 p.m. curfew is in place for all trick-or-treating activities. Those that do go out for the evening are reminded to ensure that they are dressed in reflective clothing and that young trick-or-treaters are always accompanied by an adult.

"See and Be Seen."

Also, do not attempt to go to porches that are dark or otherwise not welcoming to trick-or-treaters and respect others' property.

Fire and safety precautions to take for a safe, fun Halloween

It’s Fall and the Halloween celebration will soon be upon us. As in the past, there will be children dressed in costumes excitedly running door to door to trick-or-treat, festive decorations like glowing jack-o-lanterns, paper ghosts and dried cornstalks adorning front porches – these are some of the classic hallmarks of Halloween that make the holiday special for kids and adults alike.

Unfortunately, these Halloween symbols and activities can also present risks that have the potential to become truly scary. But by planning ahead, you can help make this Halloween a safe one.

Taking simple fire and personal safety precautions can help ensure your holiday remains festive and fun.

Fire Chief Stefano Napolitano of the City Fire Department, Chief Shawn Heubusch of the City Police Department in conjunction with the United States Fire Administration, National Safety Council along with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) would like to offer the following safety tips.

Please follow and adhere to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommended COVID-19 guidelines for Halloween celebrations, which include:

  • Having a virtual Halloween costume contest;
  • Having a scavenger hunt-style trick-or-treat search with your household members in or around your home rather than going house to house;
  • Do not wear a costume mask over a protective cloth mask because it can be dangerous if the costume mask makes it hard to breathe. Instead, consider using a Halloween-themed cloth mask.
  • A costume mask is not a substitute for a cloth mask. A costume mask should not be used unless it is made of two or more layers of breathable fabric that covers the mouth and nose and doesn’t leave gaps around the face.

General Safety Tips

  • Stay in groups while trick-or-treating while adhering to social distancing guidelines.
  • Never enter a stranger's home.
  • Costumes should be well fitting, flame resistant, highly visible and free of long trailing fabric.
  • Always test makeup for potential skin allergy before applying.
  • Remember to look both ways when crossing streets.
  • Always stay on sidewalks.
  • Provide children with flashlights and glow sticks for visibility.
  • Avoid dark houses.
  • Examine all treats before eating.
  • Enjoy with caution.
  • Motorists are reminded to take the following precautions.
  • Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbso enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully.
  • Chief Napolitano highly recommends keeping Halloween decorations away from any open flames, light bulbs and heaters. It is very easy for decorations such as dried flowers, cornstalks, crepe paper to catch on fire.
  • Additionally, Napolitano recommends keeping exits clear of any decorations so as to not block your exits in the event of a fire and testing your smoke detectors to ensure that they are working or request fire department staff to inspect and test for you.

Fourth annual Play, Eat and Trick-or-Treat set for Oct. 25 at GCC -- Meet Star Wars characters

Ready to get a head start on your trick-or-treating this year? Can't wait to show off your costume? Join 90.7FM (WGCC) on Sunday, Oct. 25, at Genesee Community College for Batavia's best family Halloween event, the fourth annual Play, Eat and Trick-or-Treat! The fun begins at 10 a.m. and will run until 2 p.m. in the GCC Forum.

New this year, youngsters will have a chance to meet and have their photo taken with their favorite Star Wars characters! The event will also feature bounce houses, face painting, movies on the big screen, games, snacks and more! Pizza and beverages will be available for purchase. Admission is $3 per trick-or-treater and adults and infants are admitted FREE.

A number of big baskets will be raffled off throughout the day. Try your luck at a chance to win one of a number of big prizes featuring items such as an autographed Buffalo Sabres jersey, tickets to the Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets game on Jan. 3, gift certificates and more!

Developed by 90.7FM (WGCC), Play, Eat and Trick-or-Treat serves as the station's largest fundraiser and money raised helps send students to the Intercollegiate Broadcasting Conference in New York City. It also supports the cost of new equipment and new programming opportunities.

"It's a really fun event and supports a great cause," Valerie Bello, 90.7FM faculty advisor, said. "Each year we look forward to reaching out to the community we serve. We can't wait for another fun and successful day of doing just that!" she said.

90.7FM is a not for profit, non-commercial radio station run by the students, faculty and staff of Genesee Community College. On the air since 1985, the station is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year and has become a well-loved part of the Batavia and GCC alumni community.

Hi-Temp Fabrication is sponsoring this year's event, with other sponsors including Buffalo's Albright Knox Art Gallery, Burchfield Penney Art Center and Pearl Street Grill and Brewery.

It's no trick -- more places to get treats in Batavia

The houses on Ellicott Avenue are decorated, the sidewalks are wide and the atmosphere is fun and focused on trick-or-treaters. It’s more like a street party and it’s known for its decorations and generous candy distribution. However, the crowds can be overwhelming.

While everyone’s there, why not treat those little ghosts and goblins to other neighborhoods throughout the community where residents are doling out just as much candy and tons of it goes uncollected?

Batavia has plenty of places that offer families a Halloween treat in their hunt for the ever-elusive full-size candy bar. Here are a few streets to try:

  • North Side -- Hart, Douglas, Fairmont, Tracy
  • South Side -- Jackson, Osterhout, Otis, Williams
  • East Side -- East, Vine, Elm, Woodcrest
  • West Side -- Montclair, Kingsbury, Vernon, Union (I know someone on Montclair who is giving out full-size candy bars.).

There are many good places in the city to visit this Halloween and they’re all good bets. Just look around you! These neighborhoods are filled with lots of friendly families and you won’t be disappointed.
