By Andrew Crofts

The Genesee Community College volleyball team can add another accolade to its 2014 season after the Cougars defeated Harcum College (PA) out of Region 19 in straight sets on Saturday afternoon to earn the District L title and a bid into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament. GCC, already crowned the Region III Division II champion, used its home court advantage to drop Harcum 25-17, 27-25, 25-23.

Ai Miyazaki tallied 27 digs and 10 kills on the afternoon and broke a 4-4 tie on serve in the first game when she led Genesee to four straight points and an 8-4 advantage. GCC kept its distance throughout the rest of the set and rolled to a 1-0 lead in the match.

Out to a 4-0 lead in the second set, the Cougars lost four straight points and then faced its largest deficit in the contest. GCC was down four points as late in the set as 20-16, but mounted a comeback out of a timeout and edged Harcum to take a 2-0 lead.

Lady Irish advance in regional volleyball tournament

By Howard B. Owens

Photos and story by Bare Antolos.

The Notre Dame Girls Volleyball Team, powered by the support of their fans, came out and proved to be too much for previously undefeated Hammondsport, 3-1 (25-15, 25-12, 18-25 and 25-13) to move onto play against Honeoye Falls-Lima on Thursday at Cal-Mum in the regional finals.

The Lady Irish are the Class DDD champions for Section V.

Throughout the match, the Hammondsport girls seemed to be overwhelmed by the Notre Dame attack and unnerved by the vocal Notre Dame student body cheering section.

Despite not having a strong service match, the Notre Dame girls used a balance attack to mix up their sets and win rather easily. Notre Dame Coach Rhonda DiCasolo said that her team "played really, really well and is very proud" of the effort and is "really excited about Thursday at Cal-Mum."

Shea Norton led the way for the Lady Irish with 19 kills. Lindsay Bender had a strong match, finishing with 30 assists and 10 service points, including finishing out the match on a run of five serves to send Hammondsport home.

The Lady Irish received strong contributions from Mary Bernadette Bochicchio who set the tone early in the first game, running out a string of five service points (nine total for the match) to open up a lead that Hammondsport could not recover from. Rebecca Krenzer lead the way with 15 service points with Olivia Marchese contributing 12 digs and Emma Francis, who seemed to be involved in all parts of the match, finished with 10 digs and 12 service points in the all around team effort.

Thursday's match against Honeoye Falls-Lima should be another difficult match for the Lady Irish and provide the Notre Dame students another opportunity to be help lift their team to victory!

GCC volleyball claims title on record-breaking night

By Andrew Crofts

For the 19th straight season, the Genesee Community College volleyball team is the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region III Division II champion. The Cougars took down Mercyhurst North East on Tuesday night and broke a 12-year-old school record in the process.

Strong serving by Nohema Garcia Torres paced the four-set match for Genesee. Her serving was so strong, in fact, that she set the single match record for most service aces in GCC history. The sophomore recorded 14 aces on the night, which broke the previous record of 13 which was held by Karen Bakos (set in 1992).

The Cougars fell behind early in set one, but fought back and took an 11-7 lead after a stretch of 7 out of 11 points won. Tied at 20, GCC was able to hold off MNE and took the opening set, 25-23.

Genesee fell behind again in the second set and faced a 6-1 Saints lead early on. Back to within 9-6, Garcia Torres led the charge back for the Cougars, serving to eight consecutive points which included two aces. GCC pulled away and took the second set, 25-16.

Mercyhurst N.E. took the first lead in the third set and held a lead as high as five at 18-13. Garcia Torres then rattled off five straight service aces and was on serve for seven consecutive points to put the Cougars in front by two. Despite giving up the lead, the Saints responded and won the third set 25-23.

In the deciding game, GCC was out to a 4-2 lead before falling behind 5-4. The Cougars came right back to take a 6-5 lead and did not look back. Genesee led by as much as five on a number of occasions throughout the rest of the set and claimed its 19 straight title with a 25-16 win in set four.

Stephanie Toledo ended the night with 15 kills and six aces, Ai Miyazaki tallied seven kills and five aces and Haley Case and Kelsey Wright finished with eight kills apiece.

Miyazaki was named the Region III Division II Player of the Year and Yu Shimizu, Toledo and Garcia Torres were named to the All-Tournament team for Genesee. GCC interim head coach Jamie Hugelmaier earned Region III Division II Coach of the Year honors.

Genesee (21-17) will now move on to compete in the Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC) tournament which will be held at Mercyhurst North East on Saturday. The Cougars will then host a NJCAA Districts tournament on a day and time to be announced. Their opponent has yet to be determined.

Batavia Blue Devils come up short against Gates Chili

By Steve Ognibene

Head Coach Jeremy Mettler of Batavia’s varsity volleyball team knew last night’s match-up would be a tough game going in.

Batavia jumped ahead of Gates Chili in the first two sets 25-17 and 25-19. Senior Ashlee Yasses led the night for the Blue Devils with seven aces, 14 assists and seven digs. Seniors Haley Case had eight kills and Maggie Saquella five kills. Sophmore Tessa Engel added eight kills to the squad.

Batavia was down by eight in the third set and was not serving well. Coach Mettler said, "We dug ourselves in a hole and battled back to finish close but lost 22-25."

Gates Chili had some new life and took one set at a time. Gates Chili Head Coach Cindy Hay said, "it has happened to us a couple times this season and the girls never give up. We wanted to win that third set and come back like we have before in games and prove it can be done."

5”2’ Freshman Jess Giannoccaro tallied eight kills, six aces,12 digs and one block while Lizzy Thrasher recorded nine kills and six blocks to help them turn the game around in the fourth set. Batavia lost that momentum and the set 15-25, which tied the night 2-2 for a fifth and deciding set.

Batavia got close to being down by four, but ended 17-25 in the last set. Gates Chili moved ahead to 7-2 on the year and Batavia’s record is 7-5.

Batavia Blue Devils tuning up for run at sectionals in volleyball

By Howard B. Owens

With all six of his starters returning from last year, Jeremy Mettler thinks the Batavia volleyball team can make a good run at a sectional title this season.

In his 14th year as head coach of the varsity squad, Mettler described his team as scrappy, one  that makes opponents work for their points.

That attitude was certainly on display Wednesday night when the Blue Devils fought back from seven-point deficit to force the rubber match into an extra-point ending.

Even in the loss there was a measure of victory because Mettler said he purposefully set up his girls with a tough early season schedule to better prepare them for sectional play.

Hilton, last night's opponent, is a bigger school with some taller players and heavy hitters.

"The best moment of the game was, when we switched sides in the volleyball game we were down 13-6 and at one point we were down 21-14 and we fought back and took them to 26-24," Mettler said. "It just shows this team is not going to give up. They're going to scrap and make you earn every point you get."

Last night's scores (Batavia in bold): 11-25, 25-18, 25-20, 14-25, 26-24.

Batavia's record so far on the season 2-2 overall, but 2-0 in their division.

Mettler said he teaches his players to be aggressive servers and that was on display in the final match when Ashlee Yasses and Tessa Engel each went on five-point runs.

"That's the kind of thing I look for my team to do," Mettler said. "I expect them to get at least three points every serve."

Mettler said Tessa Engel and Haley Case were hitting the ball from the outside well and Madison McCulley made some key kills.

"Bri Mazurkiewicz came off the bench to start a nice run in game four," Mettler said. "It's nice to get kids coming off the bench that contribute right away and help quite a bit."

Batavia has three tough games coming up: at Spencerport on Friday, Brockport at home on Monday and then a rematch with Honeoye Falls-Lima -- the team that knocked Batavia out of sectionals last year -- at home one week from today. Game time for home matches is 6 p.m.

Batavia plays in the Monroe County League in Division 4.

Here are the standings in the Genesee County League -- Division 1: Pembroke (3-0), Notre Dame (2-0), Byron-Bergen (2-0), Alexander (2-1) and Attica (1-1). Oakfield-Alabama leads Division 2 with a record of 1-1. Le Roy, in the Livingston County League, has no league record and is 2-1 overall to lead its division and Pavilion, also in Livingston County's league, leads its division with a 3-0 record.

BHS to join growing trend in Section V when boy makes girls volleyball team

By Howard B. Owens

There will likely be seven or eight girls volleyball teams in Section V this season with boys playing right along side the girls, setting, digging and maybe even spiking.

One of those boys may play for Batavia High School.

It's a growing trend, said Ed Stores, executive director for Section V.

"Last year a couple of schools had boys on them and this year there may be seven or eight," Stores said. "It's a concern that it's taking off a little bit. Unless the state education department gives us a little more guidance, there could be more."

State athletic rules allow for girls to play boys sports and boys to play girls sports so long as there is "no significant adverse effect," Stores said.

Right now, Section V interprets the rule to mean no girls are cut from the squad to make room for the boy.

If a boy were 6' 4" or 6' 5", that might fall under "no significant adverse effect," Stores said, but the state hasn't given regional athletic directors enough guidance to know for sure.

There is currently no protocol -- because the issue hasn't come up yet -- on what to do if a boy makes a team and just dominates games. Stores said if that happened, Section V officials would review the situation and determine whether there is a "significant adverse impact."

Mike Bromley, athletic director for BHS, said the boy and his father do not want to be part of any media coverage right now. Since the last step for the boy making the team -- final Section V approval -- won't take place, if it does, until tomorrow, Bromley declined to release the student's name (he anticipates approval, however)

The student was required to go through a review process at the school that determined that he would be able to compete without undue advantage, Bromley said.

"It's not automatic for a boy to be on the team," Bromley said. "If we think it disadvantages the female athletics then we have to look at it differently."

The youth won't be the first boy to compete in a girls sport at BHS, Bromley said. Last year a senior was on the girl's gymnastics team, though he didn't compete for points. He just participated in meets.

"He was really good at floor exercises," Bromley said.

The gymnasts participated, Bromley said, just because he enjoyed the sport. He wasn't trying to prepare himself for a gymnastics career in college.

There have been girls over the years who have played boys hockey, wrestling, lacross and one girl, whose ability was so advanced, played boys tennis.

Bromley described the local male volleyball player as somebody who just really enjoys the sport and wants a chance to participate.

It got a lot of attention from BHS students last year when Pittsford Mendon's volleyball team showed up with a boy on the team.

"They had a kid who was a setter who was pretty good," Bromley said. "The kids who went to the game were, 'wow, boys can do that.' I think that got them thinking about it."

Stores said there's something to seeing other boys play volleyball that helps remove the stigma, which helps encourage them to try out for the team.

In the first season after the summer Olympics, there may also be a heightened interest in volleyball among male athletes.

But there isn't enough interest yet, Bromley said, to create a separate team for boys.

Stores said in this day and age schools simply don't have the money to add more athletic teams.

"I think there are a lot of boys who want to play," Stores said. "But there aren't a lot of schools out there that are going to be adding sports."

GCC Eliminated from Nationals

By Andrew Crofts

After falling behind early in the first set, the Lady Cougars came back to win four straight points and take a 4-2 lead. In the second set, both teams went back and forth to start and were even at 17 before Iowa Central won eight of the last nine points to win the set 25-18.

Down two sets to none, Genesee battled throughout the third set. Carrie Blunt (Syracuse, NY) earned a kill and a block in succession to draw GCC within two at 13-11. Sabrina Wilhoite (Letchworth, NY) blocked a spike attempt at the net, putting a halt to a three point run from Iowa Central and inching GCC within two at 19-17. The Lady Tritons would win six of the final seven points however, and took the third set 25-18 and the match three sets to none.

Genesee ends the season with a 22-21 record, earning the District L and a Division II Region III titles in the process.
