Care-A-Van Ministries receives grant from the Walmart Foundation

By Alecia Kaus

It is the largest grant Care-A-Van Ministries has ever received from the Walmart Foundation.

On hand to present the $60,000 grant check to Care-A Van Ministries was Jason Klipa, director of Public Affairs and Government Relations for Walmart. Klipa says the Walmart Foundation awards grants twice a year and today's grant award was part of the Foundation's Hunger Program.

"It's a great way to give back to the Batavia Community and Care-A-Van Ministries is an amazing operation," Klipa says.

Paul Ohlson, president of Care-A-Van Ministries, says in the past year they were able to feed about 5,000 people. He has been operating the mobile food pantry to deliver free groceries, hope and prayer to those in need for about 13 years.

The grant awarded today will help not only in purchasing food products but replacing aging equipment on their fleet of vehicles and maintaining them.

Ohlson says, "This will go beyond the food, our vehicles are the heart of our ministry. God always provides us with what we need."

Three Rochester men accused of brazen attempt to steal $1,900 in merchandise from Walmart

By Howard B. Owens
Michael Dawson Keith Brantley Eric Strong

Shoplifting at Walmart usually results in a petit larceny charge, but three men from Rochester yesterday allegedly tried to make off with so much loot they were arrested on felony grand larceny charges.

All three were arraigned in Batavia Town Court and ordered held without bail.

Chief Deputy Jerome Brewster said store security informed the Sheriff's Office some time before noon that the three men had entered the store and had been identified as possible thieves at other Walmart locations.

Patrol cars pulled into the Walmart parking lot and waited.

"We waited to see if they were going to pay, or walk out without paying," Brewster said. "They decided they were going to walk out without paying."

The men allegedly pushed out a single shopping cart filled with totes that were filled with merchandise. The men were also accused of having stolen merchandise on them.

The total value of the merchandise was placed at $1,900.

Charged with grand larceny in the fourth degree, a Class E felony, were Keith Lamar Brantley, 43, of Adams Street, Rochester; Michael Joseph Dawson, 49, of Forbes Street Rochester; and Eric Lee Strong, 53, of Wellington Avenue, Rochester.

As brazen as the alleged theft attempt seems to be, Brewster said he believes this sort of crime is common. We just never hear about it.

"I believe this type of retail theft activity is pretty much going on all the time," Brewster said. "The amount of inventory going out of these stores without being paid for is unbelievable."

'Suspicious package' in Walmart parking lot results in traffic jam

By Billie Owens

Veterans Memorial Drive is closed to traffic and vehicles traveling on Lewiston Road are bottlenecked after a "suspicious package" was found more than an hour ago in the parking lot of Walmart.

Town of Batavia firefighters, Sheriff's deputies, and State Police responded to the scene as the attempt to remove the object got under way.

UPDATE 6:20 p.m.: "The package was safe," is what a State Police officer told dispatch a moment ago and responders are back in service. Veterans Memorial Drive is reopened. The package in question was a black backpack that was found at the fence at the north entrance to the parking lot, by the retention pond parallel to Veterans Memorial Drive. It seemed suspicious because it had a car antenna next to it with a wire running from it into the backpack. Videotape from Walmart is being reviewed to try and determine who put the backback by the fence.

The package was some distance from the store itself and the majority of shoppers. State Police used their robot to X-ray the package.

Sgt. Ron Meides said authorities needed to exercise every precaution, given the suspicious nature of the package.

UPDATE (by Howard): Turned out to be some sort of computer case, not a backpack. After retrieving an X-ray of the bag's contents and examining the results, State Police gave the all-clear. Authorities obtained pictures from store security cameras of the woman who may have left the package. It's unknown if there was any ill intent or just carelessness.

UPDATE 10:18 p.m.: Sgt. Meides said the woman who left the package was identified and contacted. Prior to going to Walmart, she had sold some items at Pawn King. Some of the items didn't interest the pawn broker, so before entering Walmart, she set the items by the fence. In the process of shopping, she spoke with some people and by the time she left, she had forgotten about the items and walked right past them. No charges are being filed and she was reminded, Meides said, to be more mindful in the future.
