Three local wrestlers had strong showings at the NYS championship meet this week, one of the area's top grapplers, Casper Stewart, finishing third in his class, 152 pounds.

That wasn't the result he and his coach and father were hoping for, said Rick Stewart (dad and coach).

" It’s hard to put things in words right now," Stewart aid. "Obviously, it is not the result we wanted, and we are disappointed.  He set the bar very high and expect to accomplish the goals.  Even though this year’s season is an amazing accomplishment with a 51-1 record with a third-place finish at states and an eastern states title, the ultimate goal wasn't achieved, and that will be the motivation for next year. I'm very proud of him and know he will do great things in this sport. He is beyond driven."

Casper’s comments about the future, Just keep training hard, working with good training partners and coaches.

• Alexander senior Ben Merill finished 4^th in division two, 138 lb. weight class
• Byron-Bergen junior Malachi Smith finished 6^th in division two, 189 lb. weight class

Alexander Gage Wagner, a senior, notched his 100th in and took first place this weekend the Second Annual Robert Bradshaw Memorial Tournament in Canandaigua.

Wagner wrestled in the 152-pound weight class.

On March 2nd, 2022, the Le Roy Wrestling Club took home the Greater Rochester Youth Wrestling League Championship!

Team Le Roy entered the Western Division with a 6-0 record, once again allowing the Le Roy team to display their athletic skills amongst the best of the Greater Rochester Youth Wrestling League (GRYWL).   

In dominant fashion, Le Roy exhibited their extensive skills versus Hilton, Brockport, and Greece in three separate battles, allowing the team to advance.  Their opponent in the championship semi-finals was Webster Thomas.   

Le Roy won 40-17 over Webster Thomas to advance to the final championship bracket vs. HFL.

HFL was a tough team, but fell short as Le Roy won 47-18 for its first of many anticipated future GRYWL championships!

Le Roy’s success is attributed to a unified village collaborating for the greater good of developing youth wrestling.   A huge thank you to Sean Valdez and D&R Depot for their amazing facility and support.    Jonathan Lauricella (coach), Troy Ireland (coach), Zach Condidorio (coach), Matthew Wojtaszczyk (coach), Cory Beardsley (coach), Rob Stiles (coach) and several parents have assisted as well in every capacity from coaching, managing concessions, and caring for one another throughout the season.   Congratulations to the Le Roy Wrestling Club!

Two Le Roy wrestlers came away from the Section V tournament on Saturday with championship titles.

Brock Flint won at 160 pounds and Joey Brennan won at 162 pounds.

Even with four grapplers winning their matches, Le Roy's wrestling team couldn't hold on for a win in its first meet of the season on Tueday night at Cal-Mum, losing 36-16.

Andrew Englerth remains undefeated on the season in wrestling with his 47th win, coming in as a 160-pound D2 state qualifier.

He will now wrestle for a state championship in Albany during the tournament Feb. 28 and 29.

Englerth beat Justin Smith, of Marcus Whitman/Penn Yan, in a major decision, 13-4.

Also picking up championship wins were Zach Hannan, Byron-Bergen, at 152 pounds, beating Kade Slayton of Hornel in a 2-0 decision, and Mitchell Gaiser, Alexander, beating William Tennity of Wayne in a fall at 4 minutes.

The Attica/Batavia Varsity Wrestling Team defeated Canandaigua last evening 43-36 on Senior Night at Batavia High School.

Attica/Batavia jumped ahead 29-0 to start the evening. Canandaigua battled back later to take the lead by one point 36-35. Batavia closed the gap on a win at the end by Gabe Yonkin (pictured above). The team lost a point in the 99-point class by a strap down on the mat.

Individual wins were, pins by Wyatt and Travis Kauffman, Zeshan Armstrong, Josh Barber and Gabe Yonkin. 

Casper Stewart received a forfeit at 113 pounds. Owen Strzelec won by decision. Overall it was a very tough match.

Thursday evening was Senior Night for Le Roy's wrestlers. Unfortunately, it wasn't a night for the Knights, who lost to Batavia/Attica 63-20.

Alexander wrestler Nick Young has committed Gannon University in Erie, Pa., a Division II school.

Young had a career record with the Trojans of 218-29 and was 53-4 last season. He won a sectional title and was second at states. He is a four-time Genesee region all-star, four-time sectional champion, and four-time state tournament qualifier.

Alexander wrestler Nick Young won a Section V title yesterday at 132 pounds and will advance to the state championship rounds.

Young beat Le Roy's Andrew Englerth on a 7-2 decision.

He was one of two Section V champions representing local schools. Josh Barber won at 285 pounds for Attica/Batavia.

Young now has four class sectional championships making in the most decorated active high school wrestler in the area. 

He's qualified for the state tournament four times. Earlier this year he placed fourth in the Eastern States tournment. He's ranked #2 in the state in his class.

Besides winning the title yesterday, he won the Brad Paddock Memorial Scholarship Award and Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

Alexander's wrestlers went to the state meet this weekend, came home today with two state titles and a fifth-place finish and got a hero's welcome. Friends, fans, and family turned out at the school following a siren-blasting escort through the village from the Alexander Fire Department and Sheriff's patrols.

Gaiser collected his first state title; Young came in fifth; and for Heberlein, a senior, it was his third consecutive state title.

"It means a lot for the coaches, for the parents, even for the school," Heberlein said of the three-peat.

Asked what it means for him more personally and what he will reflect on in the future about it, Heberlein said, 'It's not so much the state titles, but what it took to win those state titles. I think that’s what is going to remembered the most. I mean all the hard work, practices, drill partners, and coaches, grinding through and in the end, a state championship is what we got."

Alexander has a long history of success in wrestling, and Heberlein said that's because a culture of dedication is built into the program.

"We set a good standard and I think that’s something to stand by," Heberlein said. "Every time you go in for a practice, you go in that room you know what you’ve got to bring. There are no easy days or days you slack. You’re going into work and that’s something we take pride in, working every day."

There are always young wrestlers coming up behind Alexander's current crop of champions and Heberlein has advice for them.

"Stay strong mentally," he said. "It easy to be mentally weakened and that’s when bad things will happen, so stay strong mentally and keep it together and things are fine."

Alexander's Dane Heberlein will have a chance to advance toward a third state title after beating Chase Runfola, of Letchworth, 8-6 in the 132-pound division of Class BB of Section V championship wrestling yesterday.

Heberlein was one of a dozen wrestlers from Genesee County to win sectional titles yesterday at the tournament hosted by Byron-Bergen, including four from Byron-Bergen and two others from Alexander.

After two days of solid wrestling, the Alexander Trojans took an impressive third-place finish with 196 points – while missing two of their better wrestlers – Dane Heberlein (113 lbs.) and Nick Gaiser (126 lbs.). Both competed in the prestigious Eastern States Tournament the weekend before, making the podium with a fourth-place and a sixth-place finish, respectively, at the Clayton Barnard Wrestling Tournament in Hilton over the weekend. Lyndonville grabbed second place with 233 points and the home team, Hilton, took first place easily with 330 points.

Genesee Region wrestlers really stepped it up with four Alexander Wrestlers in the finals – Nick Young (99 lbs.), Mitchell Gordon (120 lbs.), Dylan Raffell (138 lbs.) and Matty Gaiser (152 lbs.) -- and three from Byron-Bergen -- Alan White (126 lbs.), Hunter Taylor (145 lbs.), and Luke Thompson (195 lbs.). There were four Lyndonville wrestlers: Jeff Gress (106 lbs.), Garren Bayne (113 lbs.), Tom Follman (152 lbs.), and Dawson Joy (182 lbs.). Young, Raffell, Gaiser, White and Gress all took the Championship.

Leading up to the championship round there were some exciting matches. 

At 99 pounds, Nick Young (Alexander) upset Tyler Mitchell (Spencerport) with a 13 – 3 win. Tyler McCleod (Alexander) beat Steven Underhill (Byron Bergen) 8 – 5 for a fourth-place finish. Daylon Swearingen (126 lbs.) -- the lone Attica wrestler, beat Anthony Miraglia (Byron-Bergen) with a 7 – 4 decision for third place. Tristan Aldinger (132 lbs., Alexander) fought off Lyndonville’s Dustin Hinckley with a 3 – 1 decision to take third place. 

A few other notable matches were Chris McDonald (138 lbs., Lyndonville) pinned Jack Borelli (Greece) in :38 seconds to take third place. At 152 pounds, Alexander’s Alex Hadsall had a close win 11 – 9 vs. Will Thompson (Byron-Bergen). Danny Komitch (Byron-Bergen) had an impressive win over Devon Joy (Lyndonville) with a 4 – 3 decision getting a third-place finish. Derrick Busch (Alexander) won by decision over John Kil (Brighton) to take finish third.

Former professional wrestler Dick Beyer, aka The Destroyer and Doctor X, was at Main St. Pizza Company today selling copies of his book "Masked Decision" and signing autographs.

The 12th Annual Alexander Green and Gold Wrestling Tournament proved to be an exciting day. Sponsored by Breton Construction, Hillside Electric and County Line Stone, the tournament had a round-robin format, and 12 area schools participated with more than 150 wrestlers. 

West Seneca East took away the Team Championship with Letchworth in 2nd, Alexander in 3rd and Attica in 4th place. Individual champions are:

In the finals, to determine individual champions, were these matches of note:

• 106 lbs. final between Bryan Ruggeri (Fairport) and Corey Hollister (Perry): Ruggeri pulled out an overtime win.
• 126 lbs. consulation final between Jake Sepor (Pavilion) and Christian Hollister (Perry): Hollister was winning with 4 seconds left,; Sepor threw Hollister in a head lock to win the match and take 3rd.
• 132 lbs. final: Tyler Aldinger (Alexander)  took a major decision 8 – 0 against West Seneca East’s Jason Draves.
• 170 lbs. final was a fight to the bitter end as Austin Heberlein (Alexander) won in overtime against Jordan Lechner (West Seneca East) with a double leg take down.
• 285 lbs. final was taken into double overtime as Dan Ognibene (Alexander) beat Shane Nelson with an Escape.

Other local wrestlers that placed were Nick Gaiser, of Attica, and Leah Taylor, of Alexander, Steve Strauchen, of Attica, and Spencer Kramell from Perry, Will Burke and Kelsey Patten, both from Alexander.
