Wal-Mart's Batavia staff shrinks

By Billie Owens

If it seems like there are fewer helping hands at Wal-Mart in Batavia these days, it's because there are.

A corporate spokeswoman confirmed rumors that the local site recently let go an undisclosed number of temporary workers.

Michelle Bradford, who works at the mega-chain's Bentonville, Arkansas offices, said: "We adjusted staffing at that store. We reduced the number of temporary workers. They are hired knowing their positions are temporary and subject to elimination at any time."

She would not divulge the number of downwardly adjusted staffing, but offered that Wal-Mart has several valid reasons for fluctuating the numbers of its employees. These include, but obviously are not limited to, being busier or slower, job performance or the lack thereof, training and scheduling requirements and "the needs of our employees."

Furthermore, stores are staffed "on a case-by-case basis" and these adjustments are, to be clear, made "from time to time."

I can imagine being in that exit interview: "As you know Mr. Owens, we consider the needs of our employees in all of our personnel decisions. We've therefore concluded that in your case, your need is to be terminated."

Ok, that gave me quite a chuckle.

I needed to buy a bike on Monday for the Muckdog that is living in my house. I wanted one anyways so it was no big deal. I would have gone to Adam Miller Toys to get one but he was closed by the time he was done with practice and we got done with grocery shopping. So I went to Walamrt and got a good deal on one.

Thank god for the big box stores.

I'm with you, Bruce!! When the super store first opened I could get everything on my list, one stop shopping, that's the convenience i was looking for. Now, when shopping for roughly the same list, I only come away with half of it. It IS time to switch. I shop BJs and Wal-Mart....I think it will be BJs, K-mart and Aldi's.
Peter, I bought a GT Outpost at Adam Miller's in 1989...works perfectly! Where will you walmart Mongoose be in 20 years?? I repair these bike for neighborhood kids all the time...what pieces of CRAP!!

Walmart Schwinn and if I am riding the same bike in twenty years, I'll be angry simply because I will have wanted a new one by then.

Nothing against Adam Miller but his hours don't work well for me.

They are open on Saturday. That's a pretty good time to buy a bike. I also think having a better bike will make you ride it more. A cheap bike is a chore to ride, it's not the same. Why don't you go down on Saturday and give a good bike a test ride.

Adam Millers bike shop has mid range and high end bikes of very good quality. In our family we have three mountain bikes purchased there and the employees have been very good about service and are extensively trained in bike repairs. The store has quality of years ago, nothing much has changed, nice people and good service that our family has grown used to over the years.
Yes! do get out there and ride a bike, great way to view the neighborhoods and get exercise at the same time.

Because I already bought the bike. The reason I don't bike much is becuase unless I have a goal or destination there is no reason to, not the quality of the bike. Saturday is 5 days too late I needed it monday night. I couldn't get it before he closed because Scott (the muckdog I was buying for) wasn't out of practice till after 6:30.
