UPDATE: Victims of fatal wreck on Route 19 identified

By Howard B. Owens

UPDATE: 2:10 p.m.: State police have released the names of the victims in this morning's double fatal vehicle accident on Route 19 in LeRoy.

The victims are Martin Muszak, 64, of Rochester, who drove a Nissan Altima and was struck head on by a Dodge van driven by the other victim, Raymond Sissel, 84, of LeRoy.

Here's what the state Police determined:

A Nissan Altima operated by Muszak was traveling southbound on Route 19. A dump truck operated by Steven W. Ebner, 55, of Hamlin, was traveling southbound behind the Altima. A Dodge van operated by Sissel was traveling northbound on Route 19.

The Dodge van crossed over into the southbound lane striking the Nissan Altima head on. The Nissan was then pushed into the front of the dump truck and came to rest on the east shoulder of the roadway. After striking the Nissan, the Dodge van then struck the dump truck coming to rest on its driver side on the west shoulder of the roadway.  The driver of the van, Sissel, and the driver of the Nissan, Muszak, were both pronounced dead at the scene by the Genesee County Coroner. The driver of the dump truck, Ebner, was not injured. There were no other passengers in any of the vehicles. The LeRoy and Bergen Fire Departments assisted at the scene of the accident. At this time the investigation ongoing.

UPDATE 10: a.m.: An accident this morning on Route 19 near North Road is confirmed a double fatal by Rebecca Gibbons, spokeswoman for the New York State Police.

The victims have not been identified pending family notifications.

Apparently, a northbound passenger vehicle strayed into the southbound lane striking another passenger vehicle head on.  A dump truck traveling behind the southbound vehicle was also involved in the accident.

The drivers in both passenger vehicles are confirmed dead.

No details on either vehicle are available at this time.

Shortly before the report of the accident came in, there had been numerous calls to Genesee County dispatch of a black van driving recklessly, weaving in and out of traffic, northbound on Route 19.  Gibbons could not confirm that this was the northbound vehicle involved in the accident.

Initial Reports:

Mercy Flight is being dispatched to the scene of a head-on collision on Route 19 near the Thruway in Le Roy. The Bergen Fire Department is being requested to the scene with extraction equipment.

The initial report had two vehicles and a dump truck involved.

Prior to the call, a van driving erratically had been reported in the area.

UPDATE: Mercy Flight was reportedly cancelled.

This week has been full of car accidents and people being hurt or killed. I wish people would just slow down and do the right thing, a lot of lives could fully play out rather then be ended so suddenly.

Given the age of the northbound driver, perhaps something medical was the cause. In any case, Rev Sissel used to be pastor of the golf ball church, and I believe Roanoke Community. My condolences to all touched by this tragedy.

I agree with you, Bud. Early reports of erratic driving sounds like a medical issue, very much out of character for Pastor Sissel. Very, very sad.

No, Bea, the Wilson family belongs to Calvary Baptist Church (the golf ball church). However, they know Pastor Sissel quite well. He was a pastor at Calvary for many years, too.

I was a member of Calvery Baptist when Pastor Sissel was there back in the late 70's and early 80's. I used to go fishing with him and also helped him as a handy man. I joined the Navy in 1982 and moved away and haven't seen him or heard from him since then. Its very strange I haven't thought about him in years and yesterday morning before all this happened I was doing an internet search on one of his sons just to see if I could locate him. I was in total shock yesterday afternoon when the names were released.

Perhaps the fact that there are 2 people dead behind her, the result of a horrific accident, could have something to do with it. Nothing funny in your observation Ritchie....nothing.

Ritchie, I deal with Becky quite often. She's an impressive liaison for the State Police. She knows her stuff, is sensitive to both the needs of the personnel on scene and the media. I'm not sure if she would have came to the scene yesterday anyway, but she did come right out once I sent her an e-mail and noted that we were having a hard time getting information from personnel on scene. Without Becky, local media would have a lot harder time getting information to readers and viewers on many local accident and law enforcement cases. And I think her delivery of this sad news strikes the right tone for the difficulty of the situation.

BTW: I provide uncut versions of these press conferences not to show any faults of the speaker, but so you get an unedited version of events. Often TV clean things up, but then often make editorial decisions that leave information out. With the uncut version, I think readers/viewers get a more complete picture of the situation.

Howard, I like how you provide your audience with the uncut versions of things. News is real and if editing for clarification sacrifices important facts then the editing process is useless to the audience.

Nadyne, thanks for the info on the coroners.

I don't know why, but women in uniform turn me on. I think it has something to do with the nuns in my life.
I really like the hat and the cut of the cloth.

to the family of rev. sissel, you have my deepest sympathy.i knew rev. sissel when he was the reverend at sewickley baptist church in sewickley, pa. i was about 10 or 11 years old. i would go to church with my aunt marybelle and cousin janice. reverend sissel and his family were very nice people. i didnt know where they moved to, but he left a big impression on me. i am in my 50's now and i can still see myself going to his church just like it was yesterday. that was one church that i didn't mind going to back in the day. god bless you all.
