Today's Poll: Do you think there is more or less sportsmanship in youth sports today?

By Howard B. Owens

"Some" of the parents are the ones heckling the other teams. While at a school in Rochester, for my daughters soccer game, and the other teams parents were shouting Batavia Sucks!, kick her, pinch her, ect. Sometimes the adults act like immature children. They don't care how this effects the kids self esteem, or the example they are setting for their own kids.

Most of the poll questions are dumb anyway. And the people that whine about them......nevermind.

Hey lets have a new pole: Todays Poll: Do you think this pole is dumb?

Yes

No

How do you spell pole anyway?

I cannot address youth sportsmanship comprehensively- especially from a now vs. then perspective as I haven't been involved with youth athletics for several years. As a former participant, former Sports Editor and former school district employee with 30+ years of observations: Most of the unsportsmanlike conduct was perpetrated by adult spectators; not the youth.

I recall a Bergen Little League game in the late 70s. A "bad call" by an official resulted in a near riot by the parents on the sidelines. The official had to back off the field (in fear of life and limb), slink into his vehicle and escape while yelling out the window, "This game is forfeit!"

On another occasion at a LeRoy HS wrestling match, a mother- distraught at seeing her son on his back, unable to escape or reverse; she rushed from the stands and onto the mat. The official had to prevent her from intervening.

I've witnessed spontaneous helmet dashing, expletives and angry posturing as youth athletes reacted to disappointment. I don't recall a situation that escalated beyond heat-of-the-moment release. Typically the youth regained control. Rarely a coach interceded.

I would have to say that young athletes behave, generally and literally, more sober than their adult counterparts. Also, I think their behavior is consistent over the years I have observed youth athletic competition.

How about the Leroy Little League All Star Game that ended on a close call at the plate and the whole town of Leroy chased the umpire down the street I think he's still running. Batavia won and he was safe.

First, none of these polls are scientific and should be taken for entertainment value. I do and that's certainly within the spirit and what I write. I am, however, always open to suggestions for polls.

And, Peter, it doesn't necessarily skew it because if your member of the past is one way and you're 30 and a person of 50 remembers the past in a certain way - that tells us how a group of people remember the past, not necessarily tied to any particular epoch. That tells us something about people's perceptions today, not necessarily how things actually where at any given time.

Howard, most of us are aware that the polls are by no means intended as scientific. They derive from current events and aim at inspiring discussion.

Perhaps youth athletics doesn't provide sufficient potential for baiting adversaries. If you had posited, one in five T-ball players are card-carrying communists...

Not much meat on that poll to provoke.

I play sports. Theres alot of sportsmanship. Im friends with kids I play against. Of course theres those jerks, there always have been. As far as the players go, were friends, Ive seen fights, then after that game apologies. Its the fans that are the poor sports. Ive had a fan call my mother a fucking fat ass. He was removed imeditly, although if I wasnt held back, it would have escaulated. Emotions run really high during games, there trash talking of course, alot is harmless fun. But at the end we shake hands and realize its a game. Players are great sports, fans are very bad. Pal Mac have some of the worst fans Ive ever seen. Even when winning theyre relentless

Yes the fans are very nasty and the officials have the right to ejected the fan from the area, but wouldn't that escaulate? Parents need to show support for their children. However, most sporting events have only a couple referees.

I watched my son beat out a throw to first after a great bunt. The assistant umpire was a opposing team parent. My son was upset and I had to tell him the umpire made the call deal with it. I explained to him that the umpire could only see what he could see and he can't be mad at that. There are only two where there should be four.

Jacob... you need to put (** ## @) in place of some of the letters in curse words when you post.. example. @ss....I know you were quoting someone else's rude comment, but some folks get real upset. You might want to go back and edit your post before it get's removed all together. Everyone should get the chance to post :0)

Because Bud, he used the F-bomb in his post. I've never seen this word tolerated on here, nor would I use it on here anyway. I dont think Howard has seen it yet.

Since I was trained to 'smile from the wrists down', cursing isn't something I would do online. However, I'll admit there are things I've read over the years that has caused me to utter words I didn't know I knew under my breath.

Many of us are guilty of a slip of the tongue or in this case.. the "finger" lol... Howard may not remove it unless someone reports it as abusive.. I was just trying to prevent someone from reporting is as abusive to Howard and then have the posting removed.... should have been more clear about why I mentioned it to him.... I was surprised to see it myself.. I was not offended by it, just surprised.

We are all guilty of cussing, I was just suprised to see it allowed on here. I guess Howard doesn't mind, so let it fly. {Just kidding How}.

Couldn't help but giggle. Good one!

I've written to the poster and asked for some editing, but mainly because I'm concerned about this page getting blocked by content filters.

And if we had an excess of such cussing into could become an issue for the entire site and content filters, as well driving away readers.

But for the most part, the audience of The Batavian isn't really a bunch of kids. We're all adults here and I'm just not going get too worked up about a single cuss word here or there. Don't direct them at individuals, is the main thing, If it really became an out-of-control issue, maybe I'd take a tougher stance. But I think knowing the majority of commenters as I do no, I'd be really surprised if we saw an outbreak of foul language.
