I don't want to alarm anyone but I was working here in the office a little while ago and heard a bunch of geese flying over, heading South. I know the weatherman has said several times this is likely going to be another year without real summer weather but c'mon, it can't be autumn already, can it?

My gardens are also doing fantastic this year. The black eye susans are monsters, forget about the hostas, they are the size of a small child. My veggie garden is beautiful.. I have zukes to pick I think this weekend. My dill came in way before the canning cukes... oh well, I'll give Harrison's the business or Crankovich's. We had not planted a veggie garden in some time.. we are calling it a "ression garden".. we are canning and freezing a great deal this year. My mother taught us how to can last summer.

Yes, my mom used to can
Yes, my mom used to can tomatoes, jam, pickles, and make Apple-Rhubarb Sauce. Its alot of work, but worth it. Their all so Delicious!! I think my mom still has her set of Mason Jars, maybe I should try my hand at canning.
My husband actually is the
My husband actually is the one that has been canning. Once he was shown how, he's wanting to try more things, he now makes me salsa.. yummie. (I'm the support person=clean up lol) I know Howard does not like Walmart, however, they do have canning supplies on the shelf now.. I will go there for that stuff because it's hard to find if it was not passed down to you. My Mother makes a apple crumble and sometimes a strawberry/rhubarb crumble.

I love cooking zucchini, but I'm not a big fan of the bread or muffins. Here are two that work well.
Chocolate Zucchini Bread
INGREDIENTS
3 eggs
2 cups white sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
2 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup chopped almonds
2 cups grated zucchini

..DIRECTIONS
1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease two 9 x 5 inch loaf pans well.
2.Sift together flour, salt, cinnamon, baking powder, and soda.
3.In a large bowl, beat eggs until lemon colored; beat in sugar and oil. Stir in vanilla, zucchini, and cooled chocolate. Mix dry ingredients into zucchini mixture. Stir in the chopped almonds. Pour batter into prepared pans.
4.Bake for 60 minutes, or until a tester inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in pans 15 to 20 minutes, then flip onto racks to finish cooling.
Hint of Lemon Zucchini Bread
INGREDIENTS
2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

2/3 cup vegetable oil
1 1/3 cups grated zucchini
3/4 teaspoon lemon extract
2/3 cup chopped pecans

1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan. Sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and cinnamon.
2.In a large bowl, beat eggs with sugar for 10 minutes. Gradually add oil and beat for two more minutes. Mix in lemon extract, zucchini and pecans. Fold in flour mixture until evenly moistened; do not overmix. Pour batter into prepared pan.
3.Bake in preheated oven for 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into center of the loaf comes out clean.

I'm soooo jealous. No garden is killing me. I'll wait a few more weeks and start hitting the roadside stands.

The power of fall like weather in July...turns the mind toward the hunter/gatherer mode. Time to stock the pantry; fill the root cellar; and fluff up the goose down pillows and quilts.

Howard, this sounds interesting...maybe a new tab for "hometown recipes". I bet that some will love it. So many of us love the site, and have watched it grow, let's try to "grow" some hometown recipes. I know there are great sites out there in cyber world, but maybe there's a great one that "only your Mom, or Aunt, etc. made special. Can we share? Just an idea.
Not real happy with the "weather", but it has saved me a ton of cash in the A/C department. There have been nice days, and I am thankful. I don't have the heat on, nor the air conditioning and that alone in these times is wonderful. Maybe not the best summer, but maybe someone is looking out to a suffering economy and saying: they need a break on the bills. I can only say thanks right now...
