If the Taliban said "We are going to train 30,000 new terrorists and in two years we are going to go back to Pakistan" what would you think. Me I'd think we won.
You can't tell your enemies that you are going to quit and expect anything but to embolden them.
The heck are you talking about Peter? He's sending 17,000 more troops into Afghanistan. I don't think he's a coward, I think he's an idiot; at least on this issue.
I agree with Chris, Obama is an idiot, this may well end his chance for re-election. Also, Rush Limbaugh is an ass. A very rich and famous ass, but still............. Not to mention what branch of the military did he serve with? Same one as Obama.
Why would anyone put a time frame on pulling out of a war before we know how long it will take to train the Afgans.I don't see how we can effectivly train the afgans in such a short time frame . The pull out for july 2011 is unrealistic and everyone who is connected to the military knows this . Don't count on the pull out happening in 2011 , more like 2013 , that is if we want to accomplish what we went there for .
I am no fan of war. I was very against us invading Iraq, especially before we had finished wiping the terrorists off the planet that we were fighting in Afghanistan.
I am for us sending more troops to Afghanistan to stabilize the area and see if we can get all the terrorists or at least those that harbored terrorists.
I think the withdrawal date is nothing more than political pandering to the base or wishful and possibly naive thinking. I would prefer that it be political pandering and that out President is smarter than that. I also prefer this type of pandering to bad “Top Gun” publicity stunts with an embarrassingly miss fitted flight suit and banners that proclaim “Mission Accomplished”
These are just my personal opinions. These opinions have not been influenced by an overweight drug addict ;)
30000 more troops to afghanista yes. announcing a withdrawl date retarded. The taliban isnt dumb they heard that and attacks will slow down and theyre just going to wait for us to pull out and then take over the government again. Thes taliban leaders were trained by americans they've been fighting since before we were a country the beat a world super power not because of skill or because of anything other then this is there land. hills, cliffs and mountains that are near impossible to navigate. caves we dont know exist and the american public complaining about civilian casualties. Yes civilian casualties are said and are avoided at all costs but when a soldier is shot at from inside a crowd or a building we cant shoot back because of civilians? WWI and WWII had more civilian casualties then military why? cause when a villiage was considered "hostile" they went in full force and took it over. now congress is trying to run the war and says we cant do that anymore we have to be nice. THIS IS WAR not story time at the richmond library. Ive seen to many of my friends killed or injured because of a very preventable incident.
Eight years is already too long. We went there to capture or kill Osama bin Laden. We failed (mainly because he lives in Pakistan.) Time to leave folks.
its not time to leave and yes you have the right to say that but you shouldn't. Your not here you dont see whats happening and the good were doing for this country. i can show you 1000s of pictures of the good things that have happened over here. What you all fail to realize is this isnt the US's war. Bush did this one right, he got the UN involved. There are 38 countries represented over here. There are canadians polish chechs spanish swedish hell eve the french have alot of troops over here so before you go off like you kow what your talking about do research chris maybe thats why you lost the election your misinformed
Hey John, I was there, at the beginning and a few times throughout, with various units. You're not more informed on this issue than I am, but I will respect your right to your opinion.
P.S. Stay as safe as you reasonably can. I'll buy you a beer next time you're home.
im not more informed then you i beg to differ. as a cival affairs sergent this is what i do. Rebuild afghanistan and correct me if im wrong but you previously said you deployed to IRAQ and even that I question cause when you were my parents neighbor you mentioned you were thinking of joinig you not that you were a vet. ill do the correct thing and pull your dd214 though and see if your telling the truth. Even if you were that was how may years ago? i was stationed at Salerno in july 07 and this deployment alone i can see the change
John, I've always said I served in 'the desert.' I don't discuss the specifics of deployments. I know who you are now...we used to play basketball in the driveway when you were a kid.
That beer is still waiting for you when you get home.
So John , I am sure the Government is paying you right now to comment on something that is irrelevant. Pull the dd214 that should make you proud of yourself . What you should be ,is ashamed of yourself , take a look in the mirror and ask yourself the question , are you helping yourself more than you are helping others .
Thomas, John has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. He does more with an hour of his day to make this world a better place than you will in your entire life.
I won't allow you to personally attack a soldier currently serving in a war zone. John doesn't need to and shouldn't have to defend himself here against the likes of you.
Well, Jonathan my respect for what you do not withstanding, exactly what right do you think you have to access another's DD-214? That is personal information.
Chris you have no idea what I do , nor will I ever brag about what I do . How did I pesonally attack him ? Everyone has something to be ashamed of , don't you or are you perfect .The simple fact that he called me an idiot for having an opinion is reason for him to be ashamed . Or do you raise your children to a different standard.Thats right you are basking in your Grandfather's success .There was no draft so John choose to do what he does , and he gets paid for it . Killing people in every aspect is wrong , so how does that make the world better . Keep believing what the government tells you why we should be there . Nothing that is done over there(afgan.) will ever effect me unless I have an idiot relative that decides to make a living to fight a holy war .
Never attack the soldier for doing his job. Attack policy all you want, but remember that members of the military will gladly die for your right to engage in those attacks.
I don't like the way the war in Afghanistan is going and I never thought we should be in Iraq, but folks like John aren't the problem. He is here defending his honor and his integrity which I'm sure he has in spades. He believes strongly in what he is doing and he should be proud of the effort he puts into making Afghanistan a better place.
He and I disagree on policy, but his deeds are not subject to question as far as I am concerned.
Howard, I often have trouble with the qualifiers you put on your poll choices because they tend to leave out other possible answers. For example, one answer to this poll is "No. We should just get out." There are many other possibilities, like "No. We need 100,000 more troops." or "No. I lack confidence in Pres Obama." or "No. Gen McCrystal's plan is better." or ...just plain "No. Answer in comments below."
This probably seems over critical of your efforts, but I couldn't vote in this poll (and others) because none of the choices fit. I hope you're not offended.

It will be hard to train a "Afghan National Army" when there is no such thing as a Nation. Most do not see themselves as "Afghan", but as members of the local clan, village and district.
