no!! what do they do for us? did they support katrina,or any other natural disater in the u.s.? the u.s. goverment says we are so broke but we can pay for another country to support their selves we have enough concerns at home . i hear over the years we have donated 5 billion dollars to haiti and the money was re-routed to crime instead of the proper services
To be a good citizen compassion is needed for fellow Americans and others. Lack of caring for others and considering yourself more important or deserving is a large part of what causes crime.
Why do people steal? Because they do not care about who they are stealing from. The don't care just like you.
Haitians, in spite of all we have done/given them in the past, hate us and would destroy us if they had the means. The corrupt government steals all aid meant for the people. They have made their bed - let them lie in it. Yet obama commits to millions, if not billions, in aid. It must be that we are living in prosperous times if we can afford that!
I feel for the people in Haiti, truly, I do. I wish I could help out, I'd like to help people right here in Genesee County who have it worse than me. But...... I, like I think most folks, am struggling to make ends meet. Taxes going up, income going down, utilities up, I have a child in college, I have a house to keep up, car has over 100,000 miles on it etc, etc. Every time I turn around, someone else is asking me for money; e-mail, snail mail, telephone, stopping you on the street. It never ends. I'm sorry for the people in Haiti, but someone else is just going to have do my part. I'm broke.
Genesee county if Im not mistaken sits on top of a fault line. This could possibly happen right here in our back yards.
I think no matter what, the world, all of us should stop the BS and pitch in and help these poor people. I plan on doing my part.
I'll be donating to <a href="http://www.rescuetaskforce.org/">Rescue Task Force</a>. It's based in San Diego and I was friends with one of the founders (he's since passed), so I'm confident my money goes to its intended use.
Use Charity Navigator before giving money to any charitable organization. It displays how much of your donation goes to the actual charity and how much goes to administrative and fund raising efforts. The people of Haiti are in my thoughts and payers
I will be sending my donation to Doctors Without Borders. People with injuries need meds!!!!!
I canNOT believe the mean spirited stuff that has been posted here. You people should be ashamed of yourselves! Be thankful that you are from HERE and not THERE!!! It could have been you! 80% of that country lives in poverty....REAL poverty, not I get welfare in the US poverty...Have some compassion for your fellow human beings!
The government of Haiti is in a shambles, there is thuggery, looting, and chaos in the relief process. None of that discounts the tens of thousands of innocent people who have nothing to do with all the corruption who have not only lost loved ones but there way of existence. We shouldn't withhold the generosity that made our nation the most benevolent in history just because of the corruption of thier leaders and fellow citizens.
Don't worry-they'll transport all the sick, injured, diseased Haitians to this country to get them well, then they'll be on our dime(Good luck,Florida!). The little Haitian orphans will be placed w/ US families. Sorry, but my means to support my family come before supporting an ungrateful country. The government is bleeding us dry w/ taxes.Soon we'll be a poor country-WHO WILL HELP US??????? Katrina-where the hell was our gov't then? We need to fix THIS country's problems first,THEN you can help other countries.Just like the war-Al-Quada my ass..... talk about a money drain. What will happen as soon as we leave???? They will destroy everything that we built, and go back to the way it was. There is no improving their life-they have a culture and their beliefs, they will never change. Why didn't we help Haiti from becoming a Third World country before this happened? Nobody gives a sh*t till something catastrophic happens, then everyone all of a sudden feels bad for them and opens up their pocketbook. Next time you see a homeless or down on their luck Veteran I hope you do the same......
I actually lived in South Florida for over 10 years. The Haitian population is pretty big down there. And I must say, they actually show up for work, work HARD, AND pay their rent which is more than I can say about a LOT of people in here 14020 who just sit around and collect $ off the system.
I dont think money, is what the people of Haiti need. They need support in other ways, that not only the US can offer, but other countries, that need to step up to the plate. Its my belief, that they should keep the people on the island, and vigorously continue the relief efforts. Building camps and bringing in aid, such as medicine, doctors, clothing, food and water is what is needed. There are ways of helping without overextending our own, and further risking the health and well being of others. It would only make things worse. This is about human need, which has NO price tag. Money is not the answer.
Gabor, I dont know any more about rescue efforts, and whats going on, any more than you. I just think sending money is chancy at best, and feel it can be successful without throwing all this money at them. There are so many successful, multi-million dollar corporations, millionaires, from the Us and abroad, that "could and should" donate to this catastrophic cause, without sending actual money.
I don't know how anyone who has seen any of the images on the TV coverage of those poor people can harbor any ill will toward them.
Haiti wasn't a very pleasant place to be BEFORE this disaster and now it's obviously unbearable.
I have also donated to Doctors without Borders.
And, with regard to what Mr. Welker said above about Genesee county being on a fault line, GCC is built right on top of the Clarendon-Linden fault.

Karen, maybe you know
Karen, maybe you know something more than all the relief agencies do because right now all they are asking for or accepting is MONEY !

Here's an interesting take on <a href="http://blogs.reuters.com/felix-salmon/2010/01/15/dont-give-money-to-hai… not to donate to Haiti to relief</a>.
The headline is more provocative the actual suggestion -- it's better to make unrestricted donations.
