Sam Pontillo reportedly working on deal to reopen family pizzeria

By Howard B. Owens

A bit of confirmation of rumors that Sam Pontillo is working on a deal to reopen the legendary pizzeria on East Main Street came out of the Genesee County Economic Development Center today.

Pontillo's potential landlord, BP Properties out of Rochester, was granted a $6,875 property-tax exemption by the GCEDC.

GCEDC officials said BP Properties and Sam Pontillo are trying to secure refinancing on $500,000 in debt left over from the previous operation.

I posted a comment on another news site & I'll ask the questions again here.

Why is the GCEDC giving a tax break to someone who was shut down for not paying taxes? Is the GCEDC willing to guarantee that tax payments will actually be made by this business or will we be stuck again?

The business WAS a great one. Under the direction of Betty, Sam Sr, & John is was viable, stable, thriving, & responsible. After those 3 players were eliminated from the game, it appeared that quality, service, & consistency left at the same time.

If the GCEDC wanted another Rochester business with a disposable Batavia figurehead why didn't they pursue a Mark's Pizzeria or Salvatore's which at least has a proven track record.

We've lost tax dollars from the old business & we've given money to a new business that's counting on success by using the name of old business & one of their family members.

When will we learn that businesses do have a life cycle & that sometimes we're just too eager to throw good money at bad ideas?

GCEDC.......WE ARE THE TAXPAYERS!!!!!!!!! Think long & hard before you waste our money. This business has not paid their due....why should we reward them??

Good Luck Sam. We'll enjoy having Pontillos back in Batavia. Leroy isn't far, but closer is better. Looking forward to great pizza and good times.

Best of luck Sam! Bring the name PONTILLOS back to Batavia with the products and service your Mother and Father provided for years. When the lights are lit and open for business, Batavia will once again be whole.
Day1... I want to order; one small pie, cheese pepperoni, onions and anchovies on the side with sheet sauce. Pick up:)

I thought I was the only one who ordered with 'tray' sauce. Glad to see someone else does too.
My first order:
1 thin crust small cheese, pepperoni, anchovies with tray sauce.
1 hodge podge, with blue cheese, and that great dipping sauce that has been missing in Batavia since the doors were closed.
