Sometimes people get artificial trees because they are allergic to real ones, not because they don't want to 'kill' a living tree; but since that's not an option in this survey I am unable to vote for any of the above answers.
I love the feel, aroma and ambiance of a REAL tree. Artificial just seems to be so...well...artificial..sigh. There's something to be said about going out to harvest the tree from a tree farm (renewable resource) and bringing that tree home to decorate. It's a time for people to be together, to enjoys the outdoors and to enjoy the FEEL of the season.
Last year I went around Batavia a week after Christmas and picked up a dozen trees and brought them home. I placed them around my bird feeders and the birds loved the added cover. I will do the same thing this year so "thank you" to all of you who get a real tree and donate to Doug's bird feeder habitat :-)
LMAO Melissa! I remember when I was in grade school, all the kids were allowed to celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah. The regular, vanilla Christians got along with the Jews just fine (sarcasm). Mike Towers was the Jewish kid in class and I can remember lighting the candles on the Menorah. We also had Christmas trees in school and nobody had a twisted fit about either of them. I loved the simpler times...sigh.
Personally, I have no religious affiliations or associations (being an atheist) but I still love Christmas. The lights, the togetherness of family, the smiles of kids opening presents, the food..they all combine into something I've always found to be memorable.
Place the tree next to the Menorah and let it be an exercise in tolerance. Let it be a celebration of togetherness and acceptance. The best gift of any holiday season is the gift of love. That's what the melting pot of America should be all about.
I wasn't joking! I am Jewish, so yes in my house the tree is next to the menorah....and i hang dreidels on it. We celebrate both in my house and it works out just fine.
