Who will win the Super Bowl?

By Brian Hillabush

This Sunday the Arizona Cardinals and two-time league MVP and one time Super Bowl champion Kurt Warner will attempt to tear apart one of the best defenses in the NFL in the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger also has a Super Bowl ring and is looking for his second.

Here is a forum for readers of The Batavian to talk about the big game and vote for who is going to win. The Steelers are a 6 1/2 - 7 point favorite, depending on which Web site you go to.

I think the Cards should pull this one out. Fitz and Warner are playing out of their minds and I am a Colts fan, so I want Edge to get his first ring.
Hines Ward has an issue with his knee. He says he is fine, but one of the major playmakers in Pittsburgh's offense could not be up to par.

I really hope the Cards win. The best Defense versus the best Offense in the NFL. Reminds me of the last Super Bowl in Tampa, Giants versus Ravens 2001. Well, the Giants' O was not as good as the Cards is, but the Ravens and Steelers have similar D's. The Ravens won that game. Hopefully history doesn't repeat itself.

Also, if the Steelers had an Offensive line, and Roethlisberger was not getting knocked down every four plays, the Steelers would have been unstoppable this season.

I think Roethlisberger is overrated. He holds the ball too long and throws some pretty risky passes.
And Pittsburgh's defense pretty much stops you from running the ball, and that is why they are so good. The 2001 Ravens D was the best I've ever seen because they scored almost as many points than the offense did and didn't let you move the ball.

I have to say that I think the Steelers "D" will be too much for Warner and the Cards. All the schemes and blitzes in there game plan will allow them to get to Kurt Warner early and often. Big Ben will come up with the big play.

Despite the Steeler's schemes and blitz packages — we all know they're rated the best "D" in the league — Warner knows how to dump the ball off fast, and he's got receivers who know how to make moves with that ball and get down the field, even on short dump offs and screens. I think if the Cards can manage to establish that quick pass threat, the Steeler's will have to back off a bit, and that could open up the deep ball game. Let's not forget that Warner and Co. had no problem picking apart the Eagles a couple weeks ago, who, under the aggressive schemes of Jim Johnson, are just as fond of exotic blitz packages and speed rushes.

The only problem with this is the Steeler's secondary, which is just as capable as its crew up at the line. That Polamalu is one of the best players to watch.

If the Steeler's win this, it will be because they really get to Warner early and often and knock him off his game. I'm talking full out madcap blitzes from every gap and corner. If Warner never gets a chance to establish his rhythm, then the Cards are done for. You know, it's true: defense does win championships... unless the offense does it first.

All that being said, I've got to root for the Cards. It's been 60 years, and they've clawed their way so decisively through these playoffs. They're a likable and ridiculously talented crew.

I agree Philip. However, if the Steelers turn the Cards into a one dimensional team they can't win. We all know how well the ground game has been in the playoffs for the Cards. That being said, if the Steelers shut down the run and know the pass is coming..Polamalu will have a field day. Watch out for Santonia Holmes returning punts..could be the difference.

Philip, you are going to see a lot less blitzing on Sunday I think because the Steelers cornerbacks are not that good. Polamalu is a great safety, one of the top three in the NFL, but he is going to have to stay back in coverage rather than using the safety blitz, which Pittsburgh does quite a bit with him.
Any time the Steelers blitz it is going to open a hole for possibly the two best receivers in the NFL.

The Cards have been a one dimensional team. If anyone can pick apart the Steelers secondary it will be Warner with help from Fitzgearld, and Bolden. When all else fails James can help keep the steelers D on their toes. If big Ben has a great game then it will be up to the Cards defense which has proved to be getting better each playoff game. The biggest key in the game will be turn overs. If warner keeps his cool then the steelers will have to play catchup and we all know what happens when ben is pressured to make a throw. I worry more about the Cards D shutting down the running game and the secondary keeping the right coverage on ward and company.

Hilly: True. Pittsburgh's corners aren't too much of a threat. But if you've got Polamalu and Clark, you really only need corners to press and check. Let those two do the hunting and steamrolling. (Yeah, OK, that's a gratuitous exaggeration.) Also, I don't think LeBeau knows how not to blitz.

Still, as much as I concede Pittsburgh its very literally "awesome" defense... I'm pulling for the Cards. I'm with you, Hilly. Edge deserves a ring. Plus, Fitzgerald can catch a pass in triple coverage, one-handed! That guy deserves a couple.

Wow, interesting...as someone who bleeds black and gold and is a season ticket holder to the Steelers, obviously you know where I am going...

I picked Cardinals over Eagles
Gotta go Cardinals over Steelers
Actually
I picked Fitzgerald over the Eagles
Fitzgerald is my favorite player in the NFL right now
He plays with passion
He plays like a kid at the park
He has a good case for best hands in the league ..Moss and OchoCinco being right up there
He will get his mitts on it before you do
He's just smooth

Always liked Warner, too
But when things go bad for him during a game they seem to stay that way

Never cared for the Steelers
I don't care for Roethlisberger at all

Arizona will either pass all day and Fitzgerald will be MVP
Or Warner will get hurried all game keeping the offense from ever getting out of the blocks

Arizona with a nice display of team athleticism
James rushing for 40+ yards in 1st half
Hightower rushing for 1 TD
Breaston making key 3rd down catches
Roethlisberger being ineffective
Steelers scoring 7 pts on defense
30-20

Steelers beating Warner to death with Roethlisberger playing a Great game -310yds 3TD 1 or fewer INT
or
Steelers D setting up 14+ pts on garbage plays 1st 3 quarters
27-13

Chris,

How long did you wait on the season ticket list? I put myself on it almost 3 years ago. I heard it could take anywhere up to 20 years to get season tickets. If ever your unable to attend a game and need some cash, I'll give you my email adress..I'd def pay top dollar to see the steelers play. I saw a game in 06 (loss to the broncos) and it was just an incredible experience. The terrible towels everywhere..man it just felt like I was in heaven.

now as to the predictions...

When Kurt gets pressured, he makes mistakes

Wayne Gandy (LT ARZ) won't be able to block the NFL DMVP

Just when you get distracted worrying about Harrison, Woodley will get you from the other side.

All this talk about about this "explosive offense"...dont forget Dick Lebeau is the best coordinator around...He'll have something up his sleeve im sure.

Hmm wasn't Lebeau a coordinator in buffalo at one time?? oh thats right, like typical buffalo fans he was run out of town cause nobody has any patience. Can you imagine the bills with a 3-4 zone blitz package? Nasty right? Yea well its never going to happen, had your chance.

one last true statement and im done.....

Offense wins games, defense wins championships...

The Bills always ran the 3-4 and were an oddball in doing so

I don't think they have the talent to play that defense anymore

Maybe they could get back to just being a true top 10 D -if not move to 3-4 in a few years- by picking Maualuga to play alongside Posluszny
James Laurinaitis for a safer pick and stick 4-3
Maybe Donte Whitner could do something finally

New Dline coach could very well mean DE sack specialist which really is needed more than an unproven high draft LB
Brian Orakpo probably according to everyones mock drafts
Schobel is the only dude I care about as far as Bills DE goes
Might have some trade bait there, though. That could fill a depth spot or two

Free agency will be key
They have to have an OLB with cover potential and DE with REAL 8+ sacks potential whether draft or signing
Someone on Oline and a QB and maybe some lowly WR project

I'd like to see Buffalo pick TE Pettigrew
but I doubt they will
If they can get D roster through signings Pettigrew would be my top pick
I like offense and Buffalo needs it
Edwards makes good decisions and throws quickly
BIG blocking 40 catch TE would be extremely valuable and with more nontrickster plays for a slot Roscoe and Jackson/Lynch out of the backfield
Could be neat with that better balance
James Hardy NOT impressed with. Lousy hands? Believe he's a total bust...and now he's injured.
Pettigrew could fill that WR height shortage
especially in red-zone
Catch a bunch of soft passes for 1st downs in the flat/middle
Block
Almost like 2 first round picks in one

I believe the Cardinals average around 73 rush yds/game during the regular season. Now, in the playoffs they have taken that to 115 rush yds/game. They have not been one dimensional in the playoffs and that is why they are winning so handily. Teams can't just key on the pass and head hunt warner. Thats what teams did all yr because they could not run the ball consistently or effectively. The running game for Arizona will be a huge factor in this game.

Ian - I had been on the waiting list since 1989. I received my "confirmation" letter in the mail this year and have already sent my deposit in.

I have been going to 2-3 games a year since 1989. I was at the first game at Heinz Field (v. Cincinnati 10/7/01) and have been going every year for a few.

I was at that Broncos game when we lost in '06. I also went to the AFC Championship game in 2001 when Brady got hurt and Bledsoe came in and beat us..ugh...

ANYWAYS, it's a great time as you know. I know our home games for next year (teams, no dates yet) and I plan on going to 5-6 games and maybe selling the tix for the other 2..depends on dates and times. I expect quite a few night games next year, especially after we win Sunday!

chris - I'm sure you may have family or friends you may like to give the extra tickets too instead of a stranger such as myself but i will say this, i know the steeler nation is a great nation and if you must sell your tickets..better be to a steeler fan :) I know for sure i would like to buy tickets to the green bay game next year, my brother is a big fan of them. Just saying if the opportunity arises, dont forget about me :)
