Guy in the lime green sneakers is banging on doors again

By Billie Owens

Once more emergency dispatchers have received a call about a pushy salesman wearing lime green sneakers. Not sure what he's peddling, but he has been described as rather aggressive in his door-to-door demeanor. He was last spotted on Dewey Avenue in the city. Police are trying to locate him.

(I think he came to our house a few weeks back offering an unbeatable deal on carpet shampooing. I declined it but asked for his business card and was told he didn't have any because the deal was only good for that day, a sort of take-it-or-leave-it thing. Then he reached for the screen door handle, just bursting with enthusiasm to show me more about this wonderful opportunity. But our giant dog, Pachuco, and his fearsome bark persuaded him to leave quickly.)

He moved his hand forward, in a way that actually indicated to me that he wanted to show me more --- "Here, it'll just take a sec, you'll see, you'll love the results!" Of course, I could be wrong, I have been wrong before, but I feel fairly confident in my sense of things. At any rate, I'm not interested in some here-today, gone-tomorrow carpet cleaning service. Pachuco didn't like him, period. That said, again, this guy in the lime green sneakers, may be selling something entirely different. But if I were him, I'd get a readily visible permit, tone down the schtick, and maybe invest in some non-neon sneakers. Just sayin'...

Kirby vacuum salespeople do this. They show up unannounced claiming to be promoting a new company in the area wanting to spread it's name by offering free carpet shampooing / upholstery cleaning in a good faith effort to establish itself.

I had a great time with a couple of them a few years back. A white van pulled in the driveway and 2 guys knocked on the door. They gave me there spiel. When I invited them in, they saw the Mastiff and the 2 Great Danes along with one of my rifles which I was in the middle of cleaning. They saw the hardwood floors, and leather furniture and decided that maybe this wasn't the best place to stop.

The 2 guys stammered their excuses as to how sorry they were to have disturbed me and my wife. They got in their van and backed out of the driveway.

Almost.

The van died at the road!

When the dogs and I invited them back into the house to call for help, they declined. Imagine that!

When the Sheriffs' deputies came by to "check them out" at my request, both were handcuffed and hauled off. To this day, I don't know what the charges were. The van was towed away a couple of hours later.

We haven't had any free vacuuming offers since then, though.
