Press release:
Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) highlighted a piece of legislation passed by the Assembly addressing yet another flaw in the NY SAFE Act as further proof that the law must be fully repealed. The bill would exempt certain retired law enforcement officers from restrictions related to magazine capacity. Hawley agreed with the principle of the effort, but noted that such loopholes illustrate the need to repeal the law and start from scratch.
“Not only should retired police officers be exempt from the NY SAFE Act, but so should veterans and every other law-abiding American citizen,” said Hawley. “It seems that as more time passes, more glaring flaws come to light. It comes as no surprise that the bad process used to force this law on New Yorkers has led to bad policy. The sad truth is, I have little doubt we will be amending this irresponsible law piece by piece for a long time to come. That’s why we must repeal the SAFE Act and approach sensible, life-saving measures the correct way; by incorporating the voices of law-abiding New Yorkers whose lives are affected by the legislature’s actions.”
Hawley recently wrote to Governor Andrew Cuomo sharing the results of a petition he circulated advocating the repeal of the NY SAFE Act. In less than three months, the petition garnered 1,050 signatures from local law-abiding citizens.

Equal protection, Not..
All I know is that I had to
All I know is that I had to give my [7] 30 round M-16 clips which I had with me my entire Marine Corps career and for 20 years after to a police officer friend of mine because I would be a criminal if I kept them.
It is not that I even use them, I haven't in years, but they were as much an heirloom of my life as my marriage license. Every time that I picked them up was flooded with memories,
Ah well, most of you wouldn't think that a big deal I guess.
Mark, obviously you lack the
Mark, obviously you lack the necessary training to own a folded piece of metal and a spring.
You're right Charlie, the
You're right Charlie, the Governor and select downstate legislators feel 20 years is not enough.
Every single one of them
Every single one of them needs to go for rushing through that indiscriminate, half baked law. Especially daddy's boy Andy Cuomo.
I hope he'll give them back
I hope he'll give them back to you Mark, after they dump this law in the can, where it belongs. I had a high-power 13 rd mag sitting in my desk since the 80s and I sold it out of state. This idiotic law reflects the mentality of the people we entrusted our state to. Well, downstate people did anyway. I don't know if the rest of the state can ever overcome the population of voters in NYC. They seem to love every suggestion that comes out of the mouths of our king down there. We'll see by next year how many gun owners register according to the king's demands. We get rid of mags and kids are running around Rochester shooting people with illegal 15 rd handguns. I wish I could write how I completely feel, but I dare not. I'm sure I'm not the only one, but spewing off here doesn't accomplish anything. A lot of gun owners have said openly they would not comply and officials claim they will not enforce. When it comes down to the wire, we'll see who, if any, will openly defy the new law. Hiding your tacticals in the shed won't do anything to oppose what we all know is unconstitutional, to sat the least.
Some people criticize Hawley
Some people criticize Hawley for wanting to separate upstate from NYC, but this is the stuff that makes Hawley's idea sound like a good plan.
