Collins announces opposition to military strike on Syria

By Howard B. Owens

Press release:

"After carefully considering the matter and waiting for President Obama to make his best case to the American people, I have decided that I will vote no to authorize U.S. military action in Syria, if and when the vote comes to the House. While I understand that this situation is very fluid, and the administration has agreed to diplomatic efforts through the United Nations, I am unconvinced that a U.S. military strike in Syria would be in the best interest of America and its allies in the region. The emergence of a non-military solution to this crisis -- as we have seen in just the last 24 hours -- demonstrates how ill-conceived and poorly thought out the President's plan has been since its inception.

Proposing military action is one of the most serious decisions a President can make, and therefore requires a clear set of objectives and a clear exit strategy. This administration has satisfied neither, leaving us with serious questions about whether a U.S military strike in Syria will be indirectly assisting anti-American jihadist forces inside of the country and will not guarantee that Assad is unable to launch future chemical weapons attacks.

Since the President proposed military action in Syria, and more recently since he decided to seek Congressional authorization for such action, I have received a tremendous amount of feedback from my constituents. I appreciate the more than 4,000 New York-27 residents who took time to let me know how they view this important national decision. My constituents are overwhelmingly opposed to any U.S. military involvement in Syria and after thoroughly deliberating on the matter; I believe they are justified in their opposition."

Gee - a GOP member that waits for the President to declare his stance, and only THEN says "I'm voting against what he said." There's a shocker.

But, as Mr. Putnam noted - kudos to him for following his constituents' desires - even if it was a coincidence. ;-)

Tim he put the poll up on his website a few days ago...I give him credit for that. How long has it been since any one of our Reps. put a poll up on his website and chose to do what the people really wanted?? Umm never happened before to my knowledge. It's a step in the right direction. With the technology being what it is today, more decisions at the State and National level should be based on constituents opinions..there's really no excuse for them not to be.

I've already emailed representative Collins, here's my comment.

Congressman Collins, you say "how ill-conceived and poorly thought out the President's plan has been since its inception"... so why then did you wait until Pres Obama basically "backed off" from his call to military intervention before you made your position?

IMO, you have made poor decisions, and waffled on issues all throughout your political career [joining MAIG for example]. The main concern now is (you even admitted) that 95% of the response your office received was against military intervention, and yet you were "undecided".

WTF! Do you not care about what your constituency wants?

My further thoughts regarding our Congressman... based on reports from just yesterday 9/10/13

Is anyone paying attention to the fact that Dem Congressman Brian Higgins has spoken out strongly against any military strike in Syria. Also Rep Congressman Tom Reed said “Residents of the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes have made it clear that the United States should not get involved in the Syrian civil war and I agree”. Whereas Republican(?) Congressman Chris Collins has been "officially undecided" on whether he would support Obama’s request for militarily intervention in Syria... so too is Dem Louise Slaughter, and also Dem Dan Maffei , who even said that "most who have contacted his office are opposed to military action"... ?

Despite Collins admitting that about 95 percent of the more than 4,000 callers to his congressional offices said they oppose military action, HE WAS STILL UNDECIDED! {Collins obviously is in the "wrong company".}

Here we go yet again, another elected representative who didn't really give a shit about what his constituents want. He was going to make his own decision.

Chris Collins needs to be a one-term Congressman.
