Sorry, folks, but I think Presidents' Day is the lamest national holiday we have. It's certainly marketed. What do you do on Presidents' Day? I guess you're suppose to shop according to the ads - all those sales! There's no meaning in it. I would vote to eliminate it and make Earth Day a holiday instead. That's not just for "tree huggers," either. I think most people can agree that the Earth is important and so is recycling, clean water and air, etc. That would be more meaningful to me.
No, there isn't. Officially it is Washington's Birthday. Someone years ago thought it would be nice to recognize Lincoln since his is so close, but not official. You republocrat lovers can correct me if I'm wrong (I'm sure someone will argue LOL) But I believe the Nixon administration started referring to Washington's Birthday as President's Day when it appeared likely ol' Tricky Dicky was going to be impeached, in the hope that all President's would be viewed by the public in a favorable light. In reality, not even Washington lived up to his legend.
Its amazing what you find when you dig into history isn't it Dave. I am currently reading a few Lincoln biographies, one of which was mostly written during his presidency. What a spin the years have added to this President's legend. The jist I've gotten so far is while he knew what he wanted to accomplish he was in such a tempest that he was like a leaf in a hurricane at times and no matter what he did it was used against him while he was in office.
The creation of the three-day weekend around holidays was the result of unions representing federal holidays lobbying for such a practice. Yup, specialists took away Washington's Birthday.
Sure, officially, it's still Washington's Birthday, but everybody calls it President's Day now.
The first bill was passed in 1968 (before Watergate, Dave) and became law in 1971.
Pat Sajak said it best
Pat Sajak said it best "We've had great presidents, good ones, mediocre ones and stinkers. Today we honor them all. How democratic. How silly."
Richard Nixon and Andrew
Richard Nixon and Andrew Johnson on the same pedestal as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
