Godfrey's Pond is a nice close by get away for Batavia and surrounding areas. The quiet country setting is family oriented and safe, great place for camping or just having a quiet picnic by the pond.
I used the rifle range saturday am of this passed week, and plan on doing some pike fishing soon now that the season is open.
Note the special add running in the area to the right>>>
As an avid fisherman in my early teens in the early 60's, the only way i could get into Godfrey's Pond was as a member's guest. At the time it was common knowledge in Genesee County that people of southern European origins (i.e. Italin-Americans) were not accepted as members at Godfrey's Pond. Whether that also included people with eastern European last names (i.e. Polish-Americans), I really don't know. Can anyone shed some light on this sad history & when & how the policy changed. I heard rumors that this was also the case at the Batavia Club on Main St.
That part of the history of Godfrey's is unfortunate, but true. I doubt you'll find many people willing to talk about that aspect of the past. Things have changed a lot since then, and no one likes to remember the dark side of our history. Still, I think it's important for us to remember the past, warts and all, otherwise we tend to romanticize things, and leave ourselves open to the same errors.
Thanks for a great video!
